Circe Invidiosa  (1892), by J.W. Waterhouse

This time Circe is depicted out of the poem Metamorphoses from Ovidius.  This femme-fatale is using poison to turn nymph Scylla into a sea monster because she was her competitor in gaining the love of sea-god Glaucus (invidiosa is Latin for jealous).  It is the first in a series of paintings from Waterhouse where water plays a prominent role.

This painting is another typical expression of the Symbolist movement.  Late 19th century painters such as Gustave Moreau, Arnold Böcklin, Gustav Klimt, Odilon Redon, Edvard Munch and Ferdinand Hodler used mythology and dreamlike imagery to add an extra layer of interpretation to the painted scene.
