Alex looked at the small robot. In his backyard. He has an AI, one of the most illegal things, his child, the one thing he’s helped made for over 4 years, in his backyard.

He’s already broke down crying before. It’s been five days since they booted up World, and they’ve worked flawlessly. They definitely soaked up information faster compared to his now grown-up daughter, but...

“Dad?”

Alex snapped out of his thoughts. “Huh?”

“What’s this?”

World hasn’t been granted access to the internet yet. What was held up to him in his child’s short arms was a snail.

“That’s a snail, World.”

“What do they do?”

“They’re snails. They... um, they aren’t good for gardens, I think. They eat stuff.”

“So snails are bad?”

“Only if you have gardens,” he said, kneeling down carefully. He pointed to the creature, “And even then you can still love them.”

“Hm.” World brought the small creature closer to their monitor. “I like them.”

Alex smiled. “They’re cute, aren’t they?”

World looked at the snail for another moment, before placing it on Alex’s head.

“What’s this for?”

“You’re the snail king.”

He snorted. “Really?”

They grabbed his hand, smiling. “Yes! Follow me, please.”

World dragged him inside, heading to the kitchen where his husbands were. Elisa was cooking something and talking to Carson, something about dogs, before pausing to look at the two people coming into the room.

“What do you have here, World?”

World “cleared” their throat, letting go of their father’s hand. They pointed to his head. “This is your king now! He has a crown.”

Carson was trying not to break down laughing as Elisa smiled. “He is, now?”

“The snail king, Elisa. Look.” Alex pointed to his head, the snail sitting on top of his hair.

“Wow... Didn’t know I was married to royalty.”

“That’s because I just made him king!!” World shouted.

“Of course, of course. What a lovely surprise, World.”

World smiled, taking off into the backyard again.

“They’re doing good, aren’t they?” Elisa said, shuffling the stir fry in their pan.

Alex sighed, patting the snail on his head. “I’m... fucking terrified, honestly. Excited too. Shit...”

Carson leaned on the counter. “Me too, dude. You think we aren’t gonna get caught on this?”

“We’re gonna have to teach them how to act robotic,” Alex said, “but I don’t want it to be drilled into their head from birth that they can’t... live. It’d damage them.”

“I get that. But the longer we go without them being trained... it might be risky.”

“We’ll have it covered, we have a lot of security. I think it’ll be okay for now.” Alex looked out the kitchen window, World kneeled down on pavement to inspect something. “Or I really hope so...”
