Is it okay to keep more than one betta in the same tank? I have a 20 gallon tank and was looking into getting one or two.
It’s not safe to keep more than one betta splendens together in the same tank.
Betta splendens is the species sold at pet stores that are commonly kept. They are very aggressive and are easily stressed out by other betta splendens.
If you’re interested in having a betta and some other tankmates, a 20 gallon tank is large enough for nerite/mystery snails, ghost/cherry shrimp, bottom feeders like corydoras or loaches, or a small school of fish like harlequin rasboras or ember tetras.
Shrimp will often become an expensive snack for your betta, and it’s always possible that your betta won’t get along with having any tankmates at all. Be prepared in case that is the outcome, you may have to return the tankmates, or rehome them.
