Thank you to the ppl who posted screenshots of Ed's leg brace references of it were basically impossible to find and i was screaming and crying. Obv I simplified it but i mostly just needed to know how the side bits worked when his knee is bent.
A drawing of Edward Teach and Stede Bonnet from Our Flag Means Death sitting on the deck of The Revenge. They are wearing the clothes that they wore at the end of the season, although Ed has removed the face paint and Stede is wearing Edward's red silk around his neck. They are sitting back-to-back, resting their heads on each other's shoulders. Behind them, the sky is a vibrant blue, with a large white cloud framing the image.
the instant gratification of ofmd fix-it fics where ed forgives stede after they have a screaming match/heartfelt conversation are nice, but there's something i really like about the ones where it takes him a little longer to come around.
stede shows up, and edward is still too hurt to forgive him, but stede also refuses to leave, and edward can't really do anything to make him (not that he tries very hard) so he just continues being all broody in the captain's cabin by himself while stede just slowly but steadily tries to get through to him while living as a normal crew member.
stede isn't technically a captain anymore, but ed isn't actually stepping up to do his job, and no one actually likes taking orders from izzy, so the crew still go to stede whenever they need something. they go to him to resolve disputes or to look for guidance or approval.
ed watches from afar, sees the way stede interacts with them, and grudgingly accepts it, because things have been a lot less bleak since he came back, and he finds it's kind of...nice.
the story comes out slowly over time. edward finds out about chauncey, and stede's insecurities, and how stede faked his death. it's not enough to make edward forgive him right away, but it's enough to take the edge off the hurt.
a week passes, and edward wakes up one day and decides he's so fucking tired of having his greasy, stringy hair always hanging in his face when he's trying to look cool and be a captain. so he decides to wash it properly, dry it, and tie it back out of his face. it's a little nerve-wracking to not have it falling around him like a curtain, like a shield, but it's also refreshing. he smears the kohl around his eyes like war paint, and goes up on deck. the smile stede gives edward when they see each other makes him feel raw and vulnerable, but not really in a bad way.
a couple of days pass, and edward comes across lucius in the library, and tries to stifle the bitter taste in his mouth when lucius flinches away from him. edward stops two metres away. he doesn't look lucius in the eyes as he grumbles out, "sorry for pushing you overboard. i was going through a lot and you were just trying to help. you didn't deserve that."
it's remarkable, how quickly after that lucius relaxes. he sniffs in disdain, "damn right i didn't deserve that. i'm getting your share of the loot for a month." edward agrees, because it's a small price to pay for forgiveness. "and you'll do my chores during that time too."
edward's eyes snap up towards lucius in a glare. "don't push it, kid."
lucius grins back, unrepentant. "worth a shot," he says with a shrug. as he walks past edward, lucius bumps shoulders with him, and the familiarity and ease in that gesture shocks edward. leave it to stede fucking bonnet to find a crew almost as crazy as himself.
the next day, edward apologizes to jim, who stares at him in silent disdain for so long after his apology that edward starts to wonder if this is where he'll die. eventually, they step right up into edward's personal space, and hiss, "you won't get a third chance, pendejo."
edward nods wordlessly in acknowledgement, and jim steps away, still looking solemn. then, just before they turn to leave, the corner of their mouth quirks up in the first smile that edward has seen directed at him since before all this bullshit happened. "good to have you back, captain," they say.
the rest of the apologies are no easier, but edward grits his teeth and makes his way through each and every crewmember he's wronged, including fang and ivan. and with every apology the mood on the revenge continues to improve.
stede watches him through it all, patient.
and two days after edward has made his final apology - to Buttons and Olivia - he wakes up one morning, and manages to gather enough courage to leave his cabin with a bare face, wearing none of the kohl that he had been hiding behind all this time.
everyone who sees him stops and stares, faces splitting into giddy grins as if they know what comes next.
once, not too long ago, blackbeard would have bristled at this kind of reaction, would have felt maybe insecure, disrespected. but edward sees it for the encouragement and relief that it is, and so he acknowledges them all with a smile and a nod, and continues on his way, up to where stede is sitting on a barrel, watching his approach with anticipation.
when finally edward comes to a stop in front of him, stede still doesn't say anything, just watches quietly and waits.
"I'm sorry," says edward. "for being so stubborn for so long. i'm sorry for making you wait."
"oh, my darling, there's nothing to apologize to me for," stede says, reaching out to cup edward's face with both hands. "i should be the one apologizing for hurting you so much."
edward leans his face into the touch, and closes his eyes, finally feeling a weight lift off his shoulders. "You have apologized," he says. "over and over and over. and i think i'm ready to forgive you."
"yeah?" asks stede, his voice hopeful, and maybe on the verge of tears.
"yeah," says edward, smiling wide as a tear slips down his cheek.

But Stede Bonnet's mark doesn't look like anything at all. Not really. And it certainly doesn't look like 'Edward' or 'Teach' or 'Blackbeard' or a black beard and that's fine. Completely fine.
Ed's absolutely fine with it.

Ed shakes his head. No. No, this cannot be Stede. Ed knows that it isn't him. But here he is… smiling, fucking singing. Relaxed. No, this man cannot possibly be him. Ed knows it can’t be him. It’s been almost 14 months now - and Stede Bonnet is dead as a doornail. He can still see the obituary, the one that Izzy had found in Barbados, and had so joyfully passed onto Edward after they’d left the port. Ed can still see the smug, pleased smirk that had tickled Izzy’s face when Ed had read the paper. Stede Bonnet - deceased. Survived by his wife and children.
More than a year after Stede Bonnet's death, Edward happens across him, seemingly alive and well, and singing love songs in a dive bar in Tahiti.

Sweet Damsel, a genderbent/Rule 63 AU
Ed thinks she can go back to the way things were before Stede, but Stede is determined to find her and make amends. (4102 words, one-shot.)
Something was niggling at her attention as her crew swarmed over the little ship and confronted its men, but she shook it off and continued staring at its mistress, who had backed up to the far rail. She drew her sword, hilt decorated with a multicolored knot of ribbon, and held it before her: high enough to be a threat, but not high enough to really be a threat.
“Sweet damsel,” Ed began. That had been a line in a story Stede had read the crew one night while they all sat on deck together, and it had struck her at the time as unbearably romantic. “I’m afraid we’ve come to ransack your yacht, but have no fear, I won’t harm you.” That had been a line Stede had used one time when Ed had let her try to menace a ship’s captain, and it just felt right.
I wrote so much for an end note that I decided to just ramble here beneath a cut.
