James didn’t let him go the entire walk to the train station. They were in luck; the last train was due in five minutes and would get them almost all the way to James’s parents’ house. James rang ahead while they waited on the platform and asked Effie and Monty if they could come pick them up. They had sounded only too pleased to get up in the middle of the night to come pick their son up and the spiky little orphan who keeps popping up from the train station.
They were alone in their carriage. Regulus could have sat anywhere. Literally in any seat, but he chose the one next to James, following him into the cramped space.
“Sorry,” James muttered, trying to press himself against the side of the carriage to give Regulus more room. Regulus glared at him, and he stopped, his thick, muscular thigh moving back against Regulus’s slender one.
Regulus was quiet, his fingers tapping on the table in front of them, the only sound in the carriage apart from the ambient noises from the train itself. Internally, his head was a scramble of snarling brambles. His inner selves squabbling over his feelings for James. He was tempted a few times to pull the emergency stop and jump off the train, but stopped himself each time. It totally wasn’t worth the fine. Though he was sure James would offer to pay it for him. He finally let out a loud sigh and began speaking to his clasped hands on the table before him.
“I think I like you,” he admitted in a whisper. James, to his credit, didn’t make a sound and let him continue. “I say think, because I’ve never felt like this before. Contrary to popular belief, I’m not as promiscuous as everyone seems to think I am, or as cold. After Sirius’s vacation from the ancestral home, I shut myself off. You know what my parents were like: showing any emotion was a sign of weakness. I pushed the part of myself that liked boys into the shadows and held him there until he grew too loud and broke free. The first boy I ever kissed was the one my parents caught me kissing. One kiss. Just one, and I was out on the street.
“I squashed everything down for so long that once I was free… It’s been hard to let myself feel again. So basically, that was a very long-winded way of saying, I think you might be the first person I’ve ever had real feelings for.” He didn’t look up. He couldn’t. He thought really hard about pulling the emergency stop after all and getting to fuck out of this situation, but then James shuffled in his seat and ducked his head.
“I like you too.”
