re : mal — as much as i disliked a lot of aspects of s&b s2, i actually think it’s very fair of mal to need some time away from alina to figure out if his feelings for her were really his or were the byproduct of being an amplifier who gravitated towards her through no design of his own. i will say that in the show specifically, there is a significant degree of codependency between the two of them that’s not as acute in the books ( it’s still there, alina just did not burn maps and sacrifice her entire unit for it. )
i think it would absolutely be very fair even after book events for them to spend time away from each other and figure out who they are independent of one another. i think that’s a healthy thing for them to do. i’m not actually opposed to them being endgame at all like i was before. alina does love mal. and mal is devoted to alina, and he’s had his own trauma besides because of the fold crossing and all the things he’s had to do since. neither of these characters are perfect and their relationship isn’t either, but there is no denying that they absolutely love each other.
i keep thinking back to that line from the darkling where he says “i have seen what you truly are and i’ve never turned away” and the implication that only sasha can accept alina for who she is and who she’s becoming. i don’t think that’s true. i think there’s a difference between seeing the possibility of corruption in alina and welcoming it, because it’ll mean that sasha would no longer be the singular being who succumbed to the temptation of his singular power. mal accepted alina, though, and recognized the struggle in her as she tried to hold on to her identity and her principles in the face of such potent temptation to abandon both and become something completely different. mal wasn’t standing in the way of alina’s potential. he was actually one of the very few people who didn’t want alina to lose herself just to serve what she was made to believe was her purpose.
he was frustrated because alina was so determined to go down this dangerous path despite the possible cost to herself. he was scared for alina because she couldn’t afford to be, and someone had to. he wanted to hold on to alina for alina, and not because of what he thinks alina might represent for him, or might check for him in the long run. he did some stupid things trying to get his point across. in his defense, he is a boy and a teenager, and very bad at expressing his feelings, as all teenage boys are notorious for. but the more i think about their relationship, the more i realize there’s a lot about his character that people read wrong.
someone on tiktok said that mal is not appealing because we all know a boy like mal, but the darkling and even nikolai are exceptional and therefore, more exciting. idk about y’all but i don’t think you really know mal if you think someone like him is just scattered in peoples’ lives at random. he is very real. he reacts in ways that might be frustrating, but ultimately understandable. even during the times when he’s doubted the possibility of ever being with alina, thinking that she’s moved to a place he can no longer reach, he remained unwavering in his dedication to her, single-minded in protecting her and being by her side in any capacity. he literally dies for her, and she would not have accomplished what she had without his sacrifice in the end. it’s not “settling”, what alina ended up doing, choosing mal despite her “options”. she chooses the one person who actively chose her at every turn. who, once he realized his feelings, was steadfast about them regardless of all the danger that accompanied being in love with the sun summoner.
ultimately, alina never wanted a king or a darkling. she just wanted mal. flaws, teenage boy tendencies, questionable tattoo and all. and for his part, mal never wanted a saint or a queen. he just wanted alina.

So! I’ve gotten back into the RPC in order to help myself feel better. With that, however, comes with the urge to talk about my muses, OCs, etc...and it got me thinking.
We’ve got ship events before, haven’t we? Pairing other people up with characters in fandom...but what about OCs? Muses who’ve taken on a life of their own? For me, especially, characters I roleplay as become personal, and take on a life of their own; I enjoy talking about their nuances and small personality traits that canon either didn’t give us, or that influences the OC I made to fit in to that fandom.
SO! With that said... I want to do a Pairing of Aki’s Muses Mini-Event! TL;DR of what I wanna do/what this entails:
If it’s an OC I’ve developed extensively or one of my RP muses, THAT is who I’ll pair you up with!
Three levels: Romantic, Platonic, Familial. Give me one or two categories, and I’ll select someone from there!
Basic rules of these sort of events apply; give me details about yourself! Age, identity, sexuality, appearance, your likes/interests, and maybe even what you like in a person. (Or the kinds of friends you’d like to make, if platonic or familial.)
And from there, it’s up to me!!
(Prepare to see canon faces for OCs, however; if I RP as an OC, I likely gave them a canon faceclaim you might know. Just take the details to heart more than the faceclaim!)
