Blogs that use the name of a whole group to refer to the oppressive people in that group
I just went to "Look at this Fucking Cisgender" on Tumblr. And I was like...laughing along with all the terrible things that oppressive cisgender people are saying on there. And the entire time, it did not occur to me to be offended because the person was using the term "cisgender" and I am cisgender.
Yet when some dude is like "women are x", I am like "fuck that fucking piece of shit"
And I think there really is a difference, and that difference boils down to power.
Like...a trans person being like "jesus cisgender people say some awful fucking shit about trans people" isn't trying to take away my rights on the basis that I am cis and cis is evil. They are just like "man, privilege makes pretty much everyone super unaware and it sucks." And yeah, I've said some awful accidentally transphobic shit in the past, so it's good to feel like I can be like "heehee, cisgender people misunderstand shit like all the time"
So when people are characterizing the dominant group (with me in it) as insensitive because of their position of power, I do not even remotely take offense, because it's true and it's good to call the dominant group on their shit. If there was a blog that was like "look at this fucking rich person", with insensitive rich person quotes, that'd be hilarious. Because there's nothing actually bad about being rich, there's something wrong with being a rich DICK.
But when you're using a label to reinforce someone's non-dominance, or to mock or punish a group that is not a dominant group, then that is a dick move. Because we get told all the time to feel bad about ourselves for being those things, not because those things make us insensitive or mean or hurtful but because those things are seen as just being a little bit worse than being "normal" (aka part of the dominant group.)
When someone tells me about privilege-insensitivity in a dominant group, it's a breath of fresh air, because at the very least, it's about something I'm DOING (or not doing), rather than about something I AM. When someone says "look at this fucking cisgender", they are implying that power and privilege is the problem, not simply being a cisgender person (since after all, we ALL FUCKING KNOW there's nothing actually wrong with the fact of being cisgender.) When someone says "look at this fucking woman", what they usually mean is that they still believe that women are a problem not because of what they do but because of what they are.
