Three years ago my friend Jack got some sweet footage of my mom’s car as it drove across the Orient causeway. Then, with a huge amount of help from him and my sisters, we crafted a short clip to tell the world a little story. The story centered on a conversation had with my mother only a few months before I lost her to cancer. I told her how scared I was of the things going on in the world and how bad everything seemed to be, and she reminded me, “there will always be more good out there, if you look for it.” After my mother died a few weeks later, I decided I wanted to do something in her memory. I wanted to travel the entire U.S. and find that good. I wanted to prove to myself and, in turn, everyone else that it existed. I posted the video on Facebook and people began to slowly tag friends of family who lived in any of the 50 states. People helped connect me to homes I could stay in and stories I could highlight. My local paper noticed the post and decided to write an article. The article landed on the front page with words that read: “A journey mom would be proud of.” This line inspired two immediate emotions (not including some tears.) 1: “WOULD SHE THOUGH?” 2: “Shit, now I really have to do this.” So I packed up my mom’s car. Lauren sent me some mixed CDs. Ramona dropped off two bags of local goodies. Shelley gave me a bag from The Market full of some health to start me out. And Rick hooked me up with a free ferry ride. On Saturday, October 29, 2016, I boarded the Orient Point ferry. I arrived to my first host’s home of a girl I never met, Lisa. She had just gotten engaged. They are married now and have a son who turned one this past September. I thought this journey would take a year. It took me three years and 31 days. But I did it. On Saturday November 30, 2019, I will be driving back across the causeway in Old Blue. And even though her engine (and her driver) are exhausted... WE STILL WANNA PARTY! It is very important to celebrate goals being accomplished and none of those goals would have been that without the support YOU ALL showed for More Good. #meetmeonthecauseway NOV 30!
