Some people on this website are really like, "No coalition-building! Only revolution!"
Look I'm extremely and passionately antiwar, but if you want to be properly antiwar you gotta learn up on your historical nuance and war history real quick, because I'm tired of seeing leftist try to wrap stories of veterans/soldiers from all drastically different wars and sides together as one big bad villain of imperialism.
There are no heroes in war, but there is definite and drastic differences in the stories of American WW2 vets, the stories of American GI in Vietnam, and the stories of American soldiers in Iraq in more recent conflicts
Okay so. Take it from someone who's spirit has been utterly broken by Tumblr culture for the last year and something to the point where i could hardly do anything because i was too busy spiraling, and who's just very recently started getting back into volunteering, activism and the sort.
Yes, it's shit to have internet leftists screaming at you to do something, now when you barely have it in you to get out of bed and you want to die. And not only is it hard, but it is also unjust, and you actually do deserve better than to constantly second-guess what your actual level of ability is when you know you're past it. And yes, it can actually take an insane amount of mental resources that often go unnoticed in those discussions to bring yourself to engage emotionally with other people's horror stories when you're at a point where you can barely take care of yourself, and if you're in the wrong headspace, being told how much other people have it worse than you while you're going through hell can genuinely make you start thinking you should hurt yourself, which is horrible, and if you're going through this, you should first and foremost focus on preventing this line of thought from developing further and on keeping yourself safe. There's a reason they tell you to put the oxygen mask on yourself first on airplanes.
But.
Please don't let this create the false dichotomy in your brain that frames helping others as fundamentally incompatible with taking care of your own mental well being just because the internet fanatics on your phone telling you to do one are making you neglect the other. Not only are you capable of doing both at the same time, but here's the other thing too- in the real world, outside, activists and organizers who are going out and doing stuff tend to actually want you to take care of yourself as much as anyone. Really, they do. They typically don't think you were up to this point a horrible enabler by laying on the couch and being too burnt out to join, and they typically don't see you as repenting or redeeming your soul by getting up and helping. To most people who actually do this stuff, you're just another human being who deserves to be happy. This is a sentiment you get from online leftist communities, not activist movements.
Just in case you needed to hear that today.
anyway the Glorious Revolution™️ is just The Rapture, Leftist Edition
You can be a socialist while not supporting the USSR. You can be a socialist while acknowledging the fucked up, imperialist things the USSR did, and noting just how far the USSR strayed from the ideals of socialism. Like, this is a thing you not only can do, but should do, because failure to learn from the USSR's mistakes is a great way to repeat them. Progress is an iterative process. Don't bring back the USSR, do it better.
How many online leftists does it take to clean a bathroom floor?
One leftist suggests sweeping first, to get rid of dust and cobwebs. Other leftists say this will result in the brush getting gross, and is unacceptable.
Another leftist declares that they can just tip a bucket of soapy water out over everything and start mopping. Another leftist insists that the floor must never get wet, because so many people die of slipping in bathrooms.
Meanwhile, someone on the right declares he will have the whole floor ripped out, instead of cleaning it, and replaced with carpet because he doesn't like his feet getting cold. Everyone on the left agrees that carpets in bathrooms are a travesty, except one who thinks it might not be so bad if it's steam cleaned regularly. They are banished.
Another leftist suggests getting a small mat or two to keep the right's feet warm in the spots their feet spend the most time, so that they'll stop with the floor destruction plan. The other leftists banish them too for being another bathroom-carpenting righto who is barely disguising their urge to rip up the floor for the profits of the carpet installation corporations.
One leftist suggests they just clean one tile at a time and eventually the floor will be clean. Other leftists chide them for their callousness when the floor needs cleaning NOW, letting even a single tile stay dirty for so long is unconscionable. Another leftist remarks that the bathroom has wood floors, not tile, but is ignored.
The right is pulling up a team of men with large hammers, toolboxes and big rolls of carpet.
A leftist sitting under the showerhead loudly bemoans that there's no point cleaning the floor, it's just going to get dirty again. Another, angrier leftist who's still just sitting getting wet in the shower next to them agrees that it's useless so long as the current system remains in place, but that the problem of the floor getting dirty will be solved if they just rip out all this plumbing.
Some leftists are busy arguing about what size of towels belong on what rack. They briefly put aside their differences to tackle another leftist who insists that mixing bleach and ammonia will create a wonder cleaner that will solve the whole problem.
Another leftist calls in the window that they should just shit outside.
The right has the whole floor ripped up and replaced with carpet.
It's not even nice-looking carpet. The entire left agrees that this is a travesty that should never have happened. Half of them continue their arguments about cleaning the previous floor while the other half takes up the new difficulties of keeping the floor clean, instantly split into at least three factions who won't talk to each other because each one insists the others are responsible for letting the carpet get installed. The leftist who had talked about regular steam cleaning tries to come back in but gets thrown out again.
The right's solution to cleaning the carpet is to rip the floor out again and install a new one every week. This drains the whole household's expenses hugely and results in the bathroom being inaccessible for three days in every week. One of the members of the right declares they've solved the problem, visibly takes a wad of cash from someone who works for the carpet installation corporations, then heads back to their hotel room so he can use the bathroom there.
The left adds the topic of exactly who represents who in this story to their arguments.

On cancel culture:
"It's a cannibalistic ethos," she told her friend the writer Dave Eggers about sections of the progressive left at the time. "It swiftly, gleefully, brutally eats its own. There is such a quick assumption of ill will and an increasing sanctimony and humourlessness that can often seem inhumane."
...
"...Part of the reason I don't want to talk about Trump is that he takes up too much space. This is what being a megalomaniac is about: taking up all the space. Sometimes, the best form of resistance is ignoring someone. More ignoring should have happened during the first term. Because even the mean girl teenager knows the best thing is not actually to say mean things to the other girl; it's to ignore her."
One thing she struggles with in her daily life is finding balance amid the rapid-fire breaking news (her phone pings on cue). She remembers Trump's first term, how they lurched from day to day, aghast: "Oh, my God, what's happened now?" How destructive it was to creative thought. There has to be a happy medium, she says, between blanking it completely and the necessary outrage [...]
