Hi ok I'm going to pull my art history degree out of the cobwebs and ramble a bit here so bear with me...

Seeing this panel instantly made me think of a particular subject in Christian art tradition called the Pietà, a depiction of the solitary lamentation of the mortal Christ by Mary following crucifixion.

It's not like for like, but seeing this posing of Kin'emon on the brink of death after defending his homeland against the Emperors in the arms of Luffy really strikes me. In the previous panel, Luffy completely ignores the scorn of Kaido and Big Mom to go to his friend. It's not only compassionate, but it also represents a literal (and metaphorical) entering of a new age for Wano as Luffy heeds Kin'emon's plea to "carry Wano on his back".

I don't know! This just seemed like a really interesting detail, so take it or leave it!

That's why he gave him Roger's hat. That's why he sacrificed his arm for him when he was only 7. Not "just" because he saw that same something that makes everyone follow and believe in Luffy.

Sure it's definitely a part of it.

But Luffy told him. He told him the end of his dream.

It's definitely also why Rayleigh wanted to meet Luffy and why he swam half the way to Amazon Lily just so he could train him and... Imagine how Rayleigh especially felt (since Shanks didn't go to Laugh Tale) when he heard about it. Like "!!! I think we found him. Roger, Joy Boy... The one you've been waiting for for so long is here," and I think I'm going to cry...

Bonus: when Luffy told Ace and Sabo and which made me feel so stupid because it's so obvious in retrospect that there's more to it than becoming the Pirate King
