Usopp’s Wano look is inspired by a kyūdō archer’s uniform. 🏹
It didn’t even hit me until I was playing Ghost of Yotei and watching this Japanese romance film (the name totally slipped my mind 😭). Both showcased kyūdō uniforms/art/discipline so beautifully that I just sat there like, wait. wait a damn minute. that’s Usopp.
I truly wish Oda had leaned into that brilliance in Wano. imagine even one quiet moment of him actually practicing kyūdō, the discipline, the breath, the release, right there under Kaido’s reign of terror. it would have fit perfectly, especially considering Zoro’s oh so subtle 🙄 “disguise” reveal. Usopp deserved that kind of thematic depth on screen.
And honestly, even though Usopp isn’t always treated as the big focus anywhere (arguably, because I don’t think he is a side character and he deserves far more focus than he gets, although admittedly I can take any screen time since it’s so little nowadays), it wouldn’t have been too much to draw a single page or panel of this, or hardly a hassle to animate even half a minute of it.
The whole toad oil motif and the frog on his head are straight out of old Japanese folklore. the Osaka and Kyoto frogs, the “Toad’s Oil” legend, all of it. he’s literally wearing a living piece of storytelling.
And what kills me is that unlike many other Japanese martial traditions, kyūdō measures true proficiency through competition and high stakes. you prove yourself when it matters most
–that’s so Usopp it hurts. 😭
And yeah I know Usopp is often framed as comic relief but kyūdō could’ve offered that rare reflective moment. the one thing people can never take from him is his sheer talent as a marksman. that’s his truth. even a subtle scene could’ve tied it all together, his aim, his focus, even his Observation Haki…
Ugh. the missed rakugo and kyūdō glory. Kabuto was the perfect kyūdō weapon, bowyer’s envy incarnate. I’m telling you, my boy was a kyūdō master in spirit. actually no he is one. and one day people will finally see it too.
I seriously need to rewatch Wano and Onigashima. I just know there’s more Usopp brilliance buried in there somewhere, deeply hidden and waiting to be noticed.
Something about kazembo, who was supposed to be the fiery specter representing the Kurozumi's burning hatred being responsible for Orochi's end will always get me--you can call it poetic justice to the oppression that he's done to the people of Wano for twenty years; you can call it his karmic debt for the ways he did in order to be shogun (through deceit and trickery); perhaps the same hatred from the clan claiming the personification of their ultimate fall from grace; might be everything falling into place as Orochi did best to unconsciously plot his own downfall from the moment he decided to live for vengeance.
The ending of chapter 1042 is so crazy. The face Kaido makes when CP0 messes with his battle…. When his victory once again is ruined by treachery… Man, I kinda love the big, drunk, evil bastard. There are many things I don’t understand about his character, like his relationship with Yamato, but I know that he loves the thrill of the fight and that he’s severely depressed, which I can understand considering the life he’s led.

One Piece - OP 23: “DREAMIN’ ON” by Da-ICE, but the visuals have been edited to accomodate the extended version of this song.
The animation directors of Toei have been hyping up Act 3 (or what many fans simply call “Onigashima”) to have unprecedented incredible animation. It will bring a new standard to One Piece. So for this opening, I wanted to use all my favorite animation sequences that happened so far.
You would think that since this opening went through like 5 versions, I’d have plenty of footage to take up the whole opening. But surprisingly no. A majority of the shots were simply updated or edited between versions. The only shots that were changed into something completely different were the shots of the Oden flashback as well as Koby/Sakazuki. “What about the Denjiro shot?” edit of the Kyoshiro shot. “What about the new Jimbei shots?” Edited over the original shots. Even the Yamato shot is just added over the Oden/Whitebeard/Roger shot.
Oda loves his gags
