Dear Visible Mending community on Tumblr,

I'd like you to meet this absurd face:

Why there a hat in the shot? Well......because this is my absurd, idiotic, ridiculous fish hat which I absolutely adore:

Yes, the giant plushie fish IS actually sewn ON TOP of the hat, and the overall result is EXACTLY as ridiculous as you're thinking. It's wonderful. Yes, I'm that person sometimes.

So I've recently started learning visible mending stuff, and remembered my horror and despair when I realized that my beloved absurd fish hat (which I got in high school during a Science Olympiad swap meet) had a large hole in the tail, one that was so big and in such a weird place that I had no idea (up until now!) how to address it.

So I decided to repair it using these Tumblr-learned techniques, and I'm actually pretty pleased with the preliminary result:

My question is: I'm considering adding a vertical/circumfrential set of stitches as well, but I'm also wondering if less is more in this case. Does this kind of mend require a set of stitches at a different angle to strengthen it, or is what I have sufficient? Thanks so much for any advice/opinions!

soo... I'm thinking about doing the OC_tober art challenge next month. Where you draw an OC in different outfits every day... So. I've been practicing drawing Davina tonight... what do you guys think? Should I go for it?

Does anyone want a Bakugan fancomic?

Cuz I tried making fancomics only to stop working on them. This one I really want to work on without long hiatuses. The comic will be based off of the Bakgan Battle Brawlers game.

Discussion #1

So you're reading a book, and you're 100 or more pages in (or less,,) and you're not really Feeling it, are you the type to read through it to the end or to completely abandon it for another book ?

Is it bad to leave books unfinished ? Is there a point in reading something you're not loving ?

Many of you know I’m a published author. Romancelandia on twitter can be WILD. And if you make a faux paus as an author, your name can quickly become mud.

The romance “world” is up in arms this week because of a post an author made with a meme about summer ‘fat’ bodies. (it was of the gist, wear what you want and eat the donut)

Which lead to outcries of fatphobias, and inequalities of plus size characters, and bashing against authors. A thread today led to this, basically saying the backstory, the reason the character is fat and the pain that character may have gone through earlier in their live ISN’T important to the character as an adult.

Readers and authors were crying, claiming “back story” chapters need to be left out, and just showcase the strong, fluffy women as adults.

I’m a strong, fluffy woman now because I went through shit. 

That backstory shit is important. But this group was claiming that including the angst a character might have about a tight dress, or the attentions of a good looking guy, is showing fat fear and a dislike of overweight characters.

(I’m summing this up badly, but I think you get my point.)

I love my fluffy girls! That’s why I wrote Sunshine and Thalia.

I’ve spent the last two weeks writing a novel for Sunshine, and next up is a revision of Thalia for possible publication.

I work diligently not to make the focus on the character’s weight and size, because we know that’s not important. That’s just the wrapping. What’s important is why he falls in love with her, who she is on the inside...

But if she’s been hurt before because of her weight, isn’t that important to the story, showing how she moves on? If others say hateful things about her, doesn’t her reaction show who she’s become?

Seeing this today crashed me, because I’d just finished about 1500 words, featuring some of of the pain and troubles “Sunshine” went through in college, and how she got through them finally in her late twenties.

Would we even question those back stories if the MC was thin?

Does it matter to you as a reader, or put you off?

I’m open to discourse. I would never want to knowingly create a character who made others uncomfortable, or include scenes readers thought were actually negative or hurtful to a plus-size MC. Or think I’m being hateful against curvy women.

I feel like this year I should start going to the gym. I've never gone to the gym, I never felt that it was a thing meant for me, but I really want to get into shape and since next year I'll be switching to an entirely different way of life in Madrid I feel like it might work. Idk. Thoughts?
