⊹ WHAT KIND OF SUB IS ⊹ OROCHIMARU ⎯ NARUTO
cw: sub!orochimaru, dom reader, psychological domination, degradation, possession, erotic manipulation, dark tone. a/n: thanks to @vampcubus for the idea <33 try my best! and it was fun to write about them.
it's so funny how sannin era flashbacks in naruto always try to portray orochimaru as like. a particularly weird kid to foreshadow their descent into immorality, but they always just end up coming across as mentally ill and horribly mistreated by everyone else instead. it's entirely unintentional on kishimoto's part but it's a strangely succinct allegory for how mentally ill kids are actually treated, what with every other character assigning malice to the actions of an unwell 12 year old baby snake just living their life.
trying to make orochimaru seem like they were destined to be evil from the start just honestly makes me sympathize with them more, because like. they'll show kid orochi and the narration will be like "this is actually literally the spawn of satan and we have to kill it before it grows" and i'll be like that's a baby? that's a little baby child who wants attention and love.
One of the most blatant example of Kishimoto's misogyny is that while Tsunade, Jiraiya and Orochimaru are all the same age, only Tsunade is described as "old".
They're not old at all, that's a fact. They're between 50yo and 55yo during the entire manga, which isn’t old. Yet for some reasons, Tsunade constantly gets described as an old lady (who doesn't want to grow old) while nobody says the same thing about her teammates. Classic misogyny. A 50yo man isn’t old, but a 50yo woman is, right?
And look. Jiraiya doesn't look like an old man at all. His face is not covered in wrinkles, he is not bent by age, and he is born with white hair, so it doesn't look like this because he's old, it's just always been like this. And that's fine! That's what a man in his early 50s looks like!
Tsunade, though? We never see her real appearance in its entirety but from what we've seen, she looks like a 80yo. Her hands and face are deeply marked by age and covered in wrinkles. That's literally not what a 50-55yo woman looks like. Kishimoto is so misogynistic and ignorant about women that it's both infuriating and pathetic.
And don't tell me "that's cause she suffered and is an alcoholic" because that's not what a 50-55yo woman who's been through a lot and who drinks a lot looks like either.
Also, I find it interesting, to say the least, that Jiraiya's age is used to make him a wise man whose experience about life allows him to give good advices while Tsunade's age is just used to mock her.
i was down bad the second he came on screen ngl
I like how in Ultimate Ninja Storm 2, Orochimaru sounds like a proud teacher just testing Naruto. Is not like he is fighting seriously at all.
Freakposting <3
not quite a redesign but more like an alt outfit? of orochimaru i had stuck in my head
if anybody is curious abt the flowers i used on the kimono (nobody is) i used marigold & tansy, meaning "grief/jealousy" & "hostile thoughts/declaring war"
