The life this Bruce has made! The empty, lonely places, and the other places that he's found meaning! The grief of meeting a man who isn't the father who wounded you! Despite the mannequin being very much not real, Bruce watches it warily, like it's going to pull out its own weapon in retaliation. “Look closer,” Bruce says quietly. Jason frowns, following the invisible red dot at the muzzle of the gun. He has to squint for a moment, trying to work out where in the stuffied body of the mannequin the bullet would've hit, until he realises where Bruce is aiming. Dread fills his gut, an irrational and inexplicable pool of fear congealing disgustingly in every empty crevice of his body. Bruce is aiming for the head. (When Jason is thirteen, Bruce teaches him how to shoot a gun.)

In a way, he can agree with the boy's disbelief. Why had Thomas and Martha Wayne left their darling son to a man who they barely knew in any emotional capacity? Serving them lunch and organising their linen closet is hardly a reason to write him into their wills. Staring down at Bruce, the butler desperately tries to work out how to explain to an eight year old that his parents might have been insane. But maybe, the insane one is him. (Alfred Pennyworth's life from butler to friend to father.)

I rarely see things written from Alfred's perspective, and this is so bittersweet and earnest it hurts my heart. His genuine disbelief the Waynes considered him family? Heart breaking. Tbh I recommend basically anything by the author orpheusaki.

This entire situation didn't seem like it could get any more bizarre, what with Bruce sitting in the dark and polishing guns, but somehow it just has, "While you are here you will not kill." Jason's throat is scratchy and dry with terror, but the insatiable feeling of being talked over and disregarded is a fresh wound. He can't back down from this if he tried, "I've killed. I still kill. Who the fuck do you think you are to stop me?" Bruce gently sets down his gun, and picks up the blade beside him with practised ease. Jason's blood runs cold when the man wearing his father's face says, "You will die by my hand if you try." (Jason meets a version of Bruce who has manifested his fears very differently.)

I noticed that there are zero recs to this blog of this author, who I adore! So I refuse to let that stand. I might rec a few more that I really like, but I figured I had to at least start with orpheusaki's self-proclaimed Magnum Opus about Jason getting transported to a world where Bruce never adopted any of his kids and faked his death to become Batman full-time, not even letting Alfred know he's alive. It's heart-wrenching and angry and soft in all the ways that make it super cathartic for me. An absolute favourite of all time.

Then, Tim thinks Bruce must have misspoke, but that's also impossible, because Bruce doesn't misspeak. Which can only mean; I think I might have loved him. "Him?" Tim whispers for clarification, just to be sure. He's not sure why, but his heart is beating so loudly he can hear it in his ears. It's so loud in fact, he almost misses the way Bruce chuffs lightly, sounding amused when he replies, "Yes Tim. Him. A man." (Tim and Bernard get into an argument, Bruce tries to offer some advice.)
