Dean’s back from Hell. He’s… acting a little odd, a little “kooky,” as Bobby says. But that’s to be expected when a guy comes back from the dead and crawls his way out of his own grave, right?

Especially since the thing that saved him swallowed him whole in the process. 

This is Lazarus Rising but told a little to the left.

I was one of the lucky people who got to watch that particular episode completely blind. I remember the growing feeling of dread as Bobby, Sam, and Dean try to figure out what brought Dean back to life. This fic makes me experience that again, but multiplied by one hundred— even upon reread.

This fic is told through multiple POVs: the gas station owner as he watches video footage of Dean’s return, Ruby, Sam, and Bobby. We watch Dean’s strange behaviour through them. The use of outsider POVs is very effective as, while the events are familiar to us as they follow the plot of the episode, the new perspective allows the author to really lean into the horror of everything that happens. If this story was told through Dean’s eyes, this fic would be completely different. By the end of the fic, the reader is on the edge of their seat waiting for Cas to arrive. 

Primed and ready for the closing lines to steal their breath away.

There’s nothing like a good outsider POV and, when that outsider POV is a couple of young ladies who are Mormon missionaries, you’re in for a fun time. 

The dramatic irony when the missionaries talk to Steve the Gas n’ Sip employee is very amusing. The conversation he’s having is completely different from theirs. Cas’s dry sense of humour is used well here. Then they walk outside and meet a man pumping gas into his vintage car and…

Well, you’ll have to see for yourself. 

Let’s just say that these two accidental Mormon matchmakers do a pretty good job at bringing Dean and Cas together. And they’re hilariously oblivious while doing it.

Their lives have always masqueraded as works of fiction, but for anyone they've ever interacted with, there's a scarily high chance that someday they'll discover the strangest events of their lives have been immortalized in a moderately obscure series of pulp horror novels. For Sam, Dean, and Cas, this is old news. For the people who've learned the truth, it's often a life-changing experience. Here's the story of a handful of those lucky... yeah, let's call them lucky... people whose lives intersected once upon a time with the Winchesters. And the stories they get to tell the Winchesters.

I will always love a fic that comes with an outside look at the absolute insanity that is the Winchesters as a whole. It’s why I was instantly drawn to this story, which is a look at the people that Team Free Will has helped or influenced over their years together as hunters. In this verse, the survivors of supernatural attacks have found each other thanks to the power of the interwebs, and, funnily enough, Chuck himself. Not only are they in touch, but they’re running their own survivor network, ready to jump into action anytime they catch wind of another person whose life has been changed by the things that go bump in the night. And they think it's finally time to tell Sam and Dean all about it, and what better way than by baiting them with a case? 

One thing I loved about this fic is that in this world, a lot of really bad stuff never happened (thank Chuck), because sometimes, we don’t need another fix-it that includes losing one of our favs. No, in this world, Chuck is more of an informant than our biggest bad, which I really enjoyed. Another thing was the callback to so many survivors that I always loved, like Jamie, from the infamous black and white episode “Monster Movie”. This time around, Dean only has eyes for the angel that had just pulled him out of hell the last time they met. 

It’s these sorts of juxtapositions I get obsessed with, these reminders of how far our favorites have come, not just in fiction, but canonically as well, if you think hard enough about it. It’s wonderfully meta in its own way, and yet another creative example of why our fandom is the best when it comes to fic writing. And don’t worry, it has perfectly in character perspectives from a few characters, Dean and Cas included, so really, this is a fic that gives us a bit of everything.

The first time she meets him, he's nothing more than an almost-missed appointment. ~~~ Dean is silent for a long, tense moment, then he gruffly says, "It's not for banishing the angels. It's to summon them. So, it doesn't—it's not to get rid of 'em, but to draw 'em in." Mitzi can't help but glance up at him at that. His voice is so heavy with so much unexplained pain, and she doesn't understand why, or what angels have to do with it. She knows religion can impact people. She's very aware that it can get complicated, and that it can be a huge source of pain for someone, but Dean sounds grievously wronged, somehow, as if it's a truly personal thing. She pushes through, focusing back on her job, clearing her throat before murmuring, "Well, I guess we all want angels to visit us sometimes." "Just the one," Dean mumbles. "Your guardian angel?" Mitzi asks. Dean breathes out, "Something like that. As close to one as an angel will ever get."

After Chuck is defeated, Dean walks into a tattoo shop and hands the owner a list of tattoos he's thinking of getting. The first on the list is a sigil that will draw angels to him. Or rather, just one angel.

Told from the POV of Mitzi, the owner of the shop, this story follows Dean's appointments as he uses the time he spends getting his body inked to tell Mitzi the story of his life. And he starts right from the beginning. Obviously, Mitzi thinks she's making it all up, but Dean's stories are entertaining, so she listens. And Dean talks. He talks about his family, his friends, life as a hunter. He talks about Cas. These appointments are like therapy sessions for him, but also for us as readers, because we get to relive the story of the Winchesters and remember some of our favorite moments.

Mitzi is a delightful OC, sassy yet kind and empathetic. The writer has done a beautiful job fleshing out her character so she's not just there for Dean to talk at, and her interactions with her sister and their friend will surely get you as invested in their personal lives as much as Dean's.

Thankfully, though this story follows the SPN canon faithfully, it completely ignores the final episode and writes its own ending. Dean gets the happy ending he so much deserves, and his new friend Mitzi is there to celebrate with him.

Supernaturally Enchanted

Dean falls into the land of Angelasia. There he meets a handsome prince who may be his True Love – not that he believes in that crap. An AR set toward the end of a very different second season.

Do you enjoy canon verse fic as well as AU with a side of fairy tale? Then you're in for a treat because this fic has the best of both worlds.

When the fic begins, Angelasia is in danger -- if no one from the line of succession is able to find their happy ending, all the magic in the kingom will fade and everyone will be doomed to a gloomy destiny.

Castiel should have found his happiness already as the next in line to the throne. But at almost 30, he hasn't found his true love yet and has long ago lost any hope of ever finding the one.

That's when the Dean we know from canon, thanks to an encounter with witches gone wrong, finds himself transported from the world of Supernatural we know to this fairy tale land.

From then on, it's such a delight to see all these fairy tale tropes and fables we know from childhood come to life as Dean tries to navigate this knew world while trying to find his way back to his reality.

Dean and Cas meet after a brave rescue where swords come to play, and even the Impala turned into a horse has a role, and from then on, like a good ol' fairy tale, they instantly fall for each other.

It's so enjoyable to see them being so soft and caring together. This story is adorable and it will definitely leave you with a smile on your face by the end of it.
