It’s hard to take time out of our harried lives to engage in activities from which we can learn, stretch and grow. The best ways to do so often involve taking risks, which can be scary, so another culprit kicks in: fear of criticism and its henchman, the human brain. It turns out that the way our brain is wired plays a part in our predisposition to not only feel but dwell on a fear of criticism. Studies show that even happy people are four times more likely to remember negative criticism than praise and that negative feedback is processed more thoroughly than positive feedback. The extent to which negative events impact us is so great that research from psychology professor Roy Baumeister shows it takes five positive events to make up for the psychological effect of just one negative event. So, our wiring works against us, creating another natural enemy to our willingness to invest in experiences that will help us grow (besides time). But that’s no cause for despair. Here are six ways to overcome a fear of criticism.
Do you struggle, like me, interpreting your outlook through the eyes of what others think? Maybe it's through the lenses of previous struggles or defeats. We build up these walls that are in fact, just an illusion. However, we often don't see the illusion, it takes someone outside to point it out. Are you surrounded by people who invest in you, support your goals, and will to change? When you take time to invest in yourself, you break through these walls. LEADERSHIP! When you focus on what's important, take charge, you begin to change the lens you see life through. When you have a goal, regardless of what it is, you have clarity. But it means you have to have focus. One of the most empowering things I ever did was plug into a team of like minded people, who are motivated to empower and challenge. When you work a job full of negativity or stress, it can tend to change the focus of our lives and our goals. How is your clarity? What do you find most rewarding in your career? What is your biggest struggle? #overcomethefear #overcomer #takecharge #focusforward #teamwork #comminity #teamfrontline #firstresponder https://www.instagram.com/p/BwE7ecBj9-y/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=h3cz79mczhs7
What keeps you focused on the career path you've chosen? How has it affected or changed you? Have you had to make changes from your original path in order to better enrich your life? I started my career path of being a police officer as a cadet in a small Arizona town. Went to the academy and began an amazing fifteen year career in different states and having held some amazing positions. But the sacrifice it required was too great and struggled fighting the internal drama more than the external calls of service. After doing fourteen years of graveyard, I knew I needed to change. Looked at continue service by teaching at the community college, but ended up taking an investigations job with the state. I miss the calls for service and excitement, but knew to really enjoy life... I had to make a change in order to save my own sanity, my family, and accomplish the goals in life I wanted to.
