Wattpad request - - The reader is Dr. Wu's daughter, best friends with Owen Grady, oh and also secretly 29% raptor…what could go wrong. Unfortunately Vic Hoskins gets to see what getting on her bad side looks like and how protectively Owen is….much more than a friend 😏
When Jurassic Park was created it blew up with people's pure interests in dinosaurs. They wanted to explore something that was years before humans ever existed on this planet. But would you feel that same desire if you had some dinosaur DNA running through your body……the answer is no and I’ll tell you why.
My parents had a happy marriage in the beginning that was filled with love from what I was told. Unfortunately I never got to see them together because my father Dr. Wu had moved me to this island when I was still a baby and my mother….she couldn’t handle how dedicated he was to his work here. He didn’t lose my mother, but let her go. He chose the lab. He chose the island. He chose the raptors. And he chose to change me.
29% of me isn’t human…..it's a velociraptor. Who in their right mind would love that?
I had arrived at the Raptor paddock earlier today than normal but I couldn’t stop fussing with my appearance knowing he would be coming into work in an hour or so. Owen Grady, my best friend.
Standing in front of the long mirror in the bathroom I pinched the hair clip in my fingers, carefully removing it from where it had been holding up my blonde hair previously up in a bun. It seemed practical considering it’s super hot on this island, but would he find that attractive that was the question. I wish I could say this is the first appearance change I have done with my hair and my outfit but unfortunately it’s not. I have changed things up four different times and not one of them I have felt satisfied with. It had gone from being up in a high bun, next a ponytail and then I even braided it over my right shoulder too.
But who am I kidding, have you seen Owen Grady? Owen has a muscular and athletic build, obviously his years in the Navy were good to him. He’s got that brown hair that I can't help thinking how soft it might be if I ever get the chance to run my fingers through it. And those green eyes of his certainly compliment that light stubble he’s got going on.
“Just focus on your job, Y/n. Just focus on the job.” Dragging my hands down my face I threw my head back. My heart was beginning to speed up and my palms were sweating. Moving my hands I was close to pinning my hair up again until an unmistakable rugged voice caught my attention on the other side of the locked door.
“Y/n! Are you in there?”
The color drains from my face picking up on his gruff voice through the wood. Gripping the sink under my palms I stuttered out the best reply I could think of. “Uh…..yeah! Is everything okay out there?”
“Yeah. I just saw your truck parked outside the paddock but I didn’t see you anywhere. I just wanted to make sure you’re alright before I start feeding the girls.”
My cheeks flushed a little bit trying to push the comfort that crossed my mind and how my heart skipped a beat at how kind he was being. He always was concerned for people he cared about and very loyal to those he trusted. That was one of the main reasons I instantly started seeing him as more than a friend a few years ago. From the first day that I met Owen many years ago with my father I didn’t entirely think he would see me as anything but Dr. Wu’s daughter or a freak with dinosaur DNA because my father wanted to test and see if it would be the next thing for science.
“I’ll be right out. I’m just - just using the bathroom.”
He simply responded except I didn’t make a move till I heard his work boots reseeding down the hallway, meaning I would be alone for a minute or two. “I’ll be up on the skywalk when you’re ready.”
Turning back towards the mirror I slumped my shoulders in frustration not reaching for the hair tie around my wrist like before. Trailing my gaze over my naturally wavy blonde hair that was falling over my shoulders I held in a breath. “You can do this…you can do this.” Spinning on my boots I opened the door, heading outside into the hot and sticky island air in the direction of where Owen said he’d be at.
Every morning when we started training the girls as he called them he would feed them each one dead mouse after they followed a single command he gave them. We’d definitely had some issues but they had improved over time. Owen may call himself the Alpha of the pack but he’d never have the abilities that my special blood seemed to give me. Walking up the metal stairs I glared at quite a few new people I didn’t recognize around our paddock. The park wasn’t open for another hour so these have to be people who work for Vic Hoskins who Owen and I equally can’t stand.
All of the new faces seemed to be making Blue uncomfortable by how much pacing back and forth she was doing. Her tail was raised almost straight up in the air and her pupils were much more narrow than they normally would be. Once I’d finally reached him he lowered the hand that he was carrying his clicker in, glancing over to me barely sending me a smile. “Blue’s not listening today. I mean I know she’s stubborn, but she’s all stiff for some reason.”
“There’s new eyes watching her.” Resting my hands on the railing I closely watched her, whistling down to her to get her attention. Blue lifted her head lightly chirping back at me where I instantly saw her whole demeanor change back to normal.
“You’ve really got a way with her.” Owen remarked coming to stand closely by my side, hands on the railing too. “You’re tensing up. Are you feeling okay?”
Unfortunately his question had drowned out where I didn’t hear him, too focused on the raptors walking around in the paddock underneath us. Tapping my fingernails on the railing I huffed turning and began pacing back and forth in front of my best friend. Owen turned slightly in my direction watching me closely like he would the raptors.
“What’s up with the pacing?” He asked me to see how my hands clenched and unclenched from fists which was a tell when I was anicey.
“There’s too many in the paddock today.”
Owen crossed his arms over his chest, sparing a look over his shoulder at the four raptors. “The girls seem to be handling it fine.”
“Well I’m not.”
He unfolds his arms walking over to me and standing closer but not enough to be invading my personal space. He knew better to keep his distance from me when I was getting stressed and reaching one of my what I have called ‘crash outs’. He simply asked me out of concern. “What’s really bothering you?”
“I could hear everything. Every footstep. Every heartbeat. Every stupid conversation. It was too much.”
Owen doesn’t dismiss it. “Then we take a break today. You don’t have to go in.”
“I’m not fragile, Grady.” I shot him an offended look.
“Didn’t say you were.”
“You implied it.”
“No. I’m saying you don’t have to push yourself until you snap.”
Exhaling heavily I stomped my boots on the ground, pacing much more quickly than I was previously over his words. “I’m not going to snap.”
“You’re pacing in circles like you’re about to chew someone’s head off.”
Halting in my tracks I turned and narrowed my eyes at him in defiance. “Metaphorically?”
“…Preferably.” A laugh escaped my lips at him and he chuckled too before he steps closer now with his hands relaxed at his sides. My body relaxed a bit just hearing his laughter. And how he was doing his best to distract me. “Look, you’re allowed to get overwhelmed. You’re allowed to step back. Doesn’t make you weak.”
“Humans don’t get overwhelmed by footsteps.”
“You’re not just human.”
A look of disappointment spread across my face as I slumped my shoulders muttering under my breath. “That’s the problem.”
“No. That’s just part of you. It doesn’t define who you are as a whole person.”
I felt my chest tightened with his words and I couldn’t help but stare at my best friend. He’d never understand how much that means to me. Glancing down at the four raptors each chirping softly in the distance, following the direction in which their eyes focused on the crowds of people around us. Every single one of them felt like they were watching me. “People are staring at me.”
“Let them.” Owen raised a hand forward brushing hair that had been blown in my face by the wind. His green eyes met mine when he whispered his next reply. “They don’t know you.”
“And you do?”
“Yeah. I do.”
Studying his face I searched for any hint of fear or hesitation. No matter how long I watched him I couldn’t find any hints. Just like always there never is. “You’re not scared of me.” My lips parted with the simple question slipping out.
“Not even a little.” Owen declared without a second thought.
One of my feet moved backwards I felt the world slightly beginning to spin around me where I stumbled backwards nearly hitting the ground. Owen reacted as quick as a tiger, wrapping his arms around my waist tugging me forward. My palms pressed against the fabric of his vest, my nose brushed against his own, and our breaths mixed together in a heavy panting. Blood rushed to my cheeks and it took my breath away seeing the same thing happening to Owen’s face too. His green eyes trailed down to my lips and remained staring for longer than a minute. In the back of my mind I wasn’t able to wrap around what was happening right before my eyes.
My best friend leaned forward, closing the gap between us and bringing us closer together if that was possible. I moved forward without thinking about what I was truly doing. I’d imagined this countless times, how it would feel, would he go slow or fast, and untimely would he ever feel the same way that I felt for him. Though in this moment all those thoughts faded away to be irrelevant by how desirable it felt once he connected my lips with his own. Owen and I leaned more into each other and would have deepened the short kiss if it wasn’t for Hoskins’s voice cuts through the air.
“That doesn’t seem like working to me, Grady and Wu.!”
A tiny shriek slipped out of my mouth and my pupils grew smaller, much more raptor looking till I blinked a few times turning slightly to the fat man who was approaching the two of us. “What do you want from us today, Hoskins?”
“I’m here because your father’s pets are being wasted,” he said, waving a hand toward the paddock. “Those raptors should be doing more than running drills. They should be deployed.”
The words hit me like a spark when I curled my fingers into fists, but it didn’t stop the shift of anger building up inside of me. “You want to turn them into weapons. You want to turn them into something they’re not.”
Hoskins shrugged his shoulders. “They’re assets for war. And your father built them to be useful. You should understand that better than anyone.”
One second I was standing there and the next I was moving when something snapped inside of me. My feet charged forward and my fists were raised as I saw the shock flash across Hoskins face, the way he stumbled back, completely unprepared for how quickly I could reach him. But remarkably I never did because strong arms wrapped around my waist, hauling me backwards. Owen’s chest hit my back, solid and grounding, even as I thrashed hearing his voice low and commanding. “Y/n! Hey, look at me. Not him.”
I snarled, whipping my head around so I’d meet his gaze. Hoskins’s eyes went wide, but he still didn’t understand what he was seeing. He thought I was just losing my temper. Owen knew better. Hoskins pointed at me, sputtering. “What the hell is wrong with her?”
“Back off,” Owen snapped without looking at him. His grip tightened around me, arms locking mine to my sides. “You pushed her.”
“I barely said anything!”
“You don’t know what sets her off,” Owen growled. “So shut up.”
Hoskins bristled, but he took a step back. And that was good because if he didn’t, I wasn’t sure I could stop myself.
Owen shifted me in his arms, turning me so I faced him instead of my target. His hands came up to my shoulders, firm but gentle, thumbs brushing slow circles that made my pulse stutter. “Y/n,” he murmured, softer now. “Come back. I’m right here.”
My breathing slowed, my fists unclenched and my vision softened at the edges. I sagged forward, forehead brushing his chest as the crash‑out ebbed.
Owen ignored him completely. “Are you with me?” He tipped my chin up with one of his index fingers, eyes carefully searching mine.
“Y - yeah.” I nodded, though my whole body was still trembling. His touch steadied me more than anything else ever had during these type of events.
He swallowed hard, thumb brushing my cheek. Trailing his hands down to intertwine my hands in his larger ones leading me towards the metal stairs on the other side of Hoskins. “Let’s get you some water.”
“You can’t just walk away from me, Grady. You two still have a job to do.”
Hoskins shouted at us yet my best friend totally ignored his comment. We made our way down the steps and sat inside my truck with the air conditioning. Brushing my thumbs together in my lap I kept my eyes dropped to my lap, not saying a word for what felt like ten minutes. Squinting my eyes tightly shut I felt tears building up in the corner of my eyelids thinking about my thoughts from earlier in the bathroom.
He can’t possibly feel the same way for me. I’m only a friend to him.
He only puts up with my crashouts because he knows I don’t have a lot of friends.
He’d never want someone like me that can’t control her ridiculous animal instincts that she didn’t ask for. He would likely want to date someone better, someone more…human.
“Hey, are you okay - you’re crying.” Owen pulled me from the trance I was in with him gently placing a hand on my shoulder.
“It’s nothing.” I lied through my teeth. “Hoskins just really riled me up with what he said. We should - we should get back to work.”
Reaching for the door handle newr me in the passenger seat I pushed it open almost getting out until Owen reached across the counsel to stop me. He managed to grab the back of my belt that was hooked through the belt loops of my shorts, he tugged me backwards and I shut the door in the process since my hand was still holding onto said handle. His movement wasn’t forceful or rough, but it was enough to get me back inside the vehicle with him before I could run away from him.
“Owen, we really should get back to work.”
“We’re not going anywhere until you tell me why you’re crying.”
“It doesn’t matter.”
He shook his head in disagreement. “Yes it does.”
“I - I don’t.” Covering my face with my hands my face turned bright red with tears sliding down. I couldn’t stop myself from getting emotional in front of him. I was tougher than this…or I thought I was at least. “I don’t know how to tell you how I feel. I’m - I’m too afraid to tell you the truth.”
Owen carefully asked me. “The truth about what?”
“How I feel about you….what the kiss meant to me.”
Owen released his grip on my jeans, hesitatingly touching my shoulder using a much calmer tone than he had with our boss. “Y/n, I’m your best friend. You can tell me anything but only if you’re ready to.”
“I want - I want to be more than that.” Wiping away falling tears with my hands I dropped them back into my lap. Shifting in the seat I slumped my shoulders once releasing a heavy breath, preparing myself to actually say the confession that was weighing on me on the inside. Twiddling my thumbs together that rested on my lap. “I don’t know to say this any other way except that I don’t want to be your friend anymore. I - I want to be your girlfriend. Except the problem is that - that I have to be kidding myself because in what universe would you want to be with a girl whose father gave her raptor DNA. A girl that can’t control the animal instincts inside of her where she gets so close to ripping someone’s head off. Honestly, I’m - I’m a total disaster so you’ll definitely want someone better than me.”
Thick silence instantly fell inside the truck with the two of us staring at each other. Owen’s lips parted where he went to say something but he closed it when no words came out. My chest tightened in anticipation waiting for him to say something, even my name would be better than listening to this extremely uncomfortable silence…..finally there was some relief though.
“I don’t want to date anyone.”
My heart dropped. “Oh I see.” So he’s definitely not interested in dating me.
“I want the girl with raptor eyes who just so happens to be my best friend.”
Blankly looking at him I must’ve blacked out while he was talking because the question slipped out without time for me to change my response. “Are you serious?”
Owen smirked in my direction before he quickly leaned forward, crawling across the counsel. He crashed his lips directly onto mine, making a gasp get stuck in the back of my throat. Instantly my fingers grabbed the fabric of his shirt bringing him closer. “I’m dead serious, Y/n. I don’t want to be with someone else. I want to be with you. I want to be with the girl with raptor eyes.” He drew back, breaking the kiss, resting his forehead against mine.
“A raptor Alpha and the girl with raptor eyes. That makes for an interesting dynamic.” Grinning back at him I tugged him by his shirt, reconnecting our lips together in a much longer kiss than any of the previous ones.

I was messing around, and Inspired by the amazing fic So. This is our life now by YinnanYan, I made the Camp Fam as Raptors
Basically, the kids are kidnapped and through Wu’s madness are turned into Velociraptors, in this they were Wu’s attempt to copy Lockwood’s daughters work, a virus that changes the genetic code cell by cell.
However, human genetics are much harder to change only a fraction, only a tiny part that causes the defect, than to simply override the existing genetic makeup into his liking, (just like the embryo inside Emu and Ostrich eggs are changed to create a dinosaur).
His belief is that the mind of a human can be put into a raptor in this way, fully aware and capable of taking orders, however the kids manage to catch on, after the first to ‘hatch’ gets very violent and upset, and refuses to listen to any words.
He makes the mistake of saying that ‘it seems the mind cannot comprehend the change in form, perhaps even re writing every cell has had an affect as well, at least this way we don’t have to worry about the previous memories affecting their loyalty.’
This does end up making Wu decide to rename them, and I can’t decide what their ‘raptor’ names should be, any suggestions are welcome.
Also, below the line are a breakdown of the kids changes!
Brooklynn is made with genetic code from Echo, she’s the smallest of the pack and due to having a short snout, also the one with the hardest time in long distance runs. However she’s an amazing ambusher as she can hide much easier due to her size.
Name ideas:
Glory
Goldie
Cleo
Ben was made using genetics from Delta, he was very small at first, but as an adult he’s the largest of their pack. He’s an excellent tracker and ‘tank’ against the larger foes. But he hates conflict unless to protect the others, he stays more towards the back of pack while moving, defending the rear.
Name ideas:
Hunter
Scout
Camo
Tiny
Nugget
Sammy and Kenji are mostly Isla Sorna Velociraptor, however Wu added in some Atrociraptor to see if it would mellow out some of the more violent tendencies.
Sammy is affected by this in her size and bone structure, she’s almost as large as Ben, but all of it is muscle. She’s arguably the most combative of them, having become extremely possessive of the pack. She mostly helps pin down prey, her large form more sturdy in case she’s flung off.
Name ideas
Blair (means Battlefield)
Omen
Witch
Kenji is the second smallest, just barely a bit larger than Brooklynn, he’s an endurance runner, and alongside Yaz, will exhaust large prey so that the other members of the pack can fight much easier.
Name ideas
Prince
Ocean
Riptide
Chad
Kirk
Yaz and Darius are made with Blue’s genetics, and while Darius is arguably the most ‘gentle’ of the group towards humans, she’s perhaps the most viscous, with a known tendency to snap at anyone who dares get close enough.
Yaz is mostly legs, an endurance runner and the fastest without question, she mainly sticks to Sammy’s side when not hunting. The pair of them are a lethal team, Yaz quickness and Sammy’s brutality makes them a perfect match.
Name ideas
Mystic
Amethyst
Barney
Choco chip
Darius is a good tracker, but an even better fighter, he takes the lead for most fights, and has a tendancy to spot weaknesses very quickly. Outwardly he appears the most ‘tame’ with humans, he watches them but as long as they keep their distance he’s practically cordial. What they don’t know is his seething rage, and his schemes to make sure his pack escapes.
I really think Wu's "redemption" arc is really weak and could have been made better if they gave his character a vengeful daughter that would have kept him in his place when he tried to repent. Someone who was a physical embodiment of everything he gave up for his own fame.
He doesn't deserve to be peacefully working with Yasammy while they assist farmers effected by the locust. And I think thats because of how many people were killed by his dinosaurs, by his overconfidence, by his arrogance.
Like I love Dr. Wu as a villian but his redemption was unsatisfying at best.
