This is like a textbook illustration of introverts vs. extraverts.
Faifa's expression when hugging and comforting Wine is painfully honest and filled to the brim with the pain he hides behind his smile and the desperate loneliness he tries to chase away with everyone else in the whole world but cannot help but feel when he's with Wine who makes him feel so much.

I'm sooooo fuckin late with this but I just had this thought of sharing a few details of YothaGun story that went differently in the novel. So I'm doing it and no one can stop me. Even if it's kinda late for that already.
I'll put it all under the cut just in case someone might consider this as spoilers

Trope Tuesday: Ear Touches
When I first received an ask by @abstractelysium about whether I had explored ear touches for Trope Tuesday, I was super excited. Because ear touches? They're adorable. This simple move screams familiarity and intimacy.
Ballboy Tactics
I will fully admit to being on board with ANYTHING involving the ear. Ear kisses, whispering in the ear, blowing on the ear, nibbling, an ear grab - I love them all.
Actually, no ->
Stay With Me
Wake me up like this and meet your death.
But all the rest? I'm on board. Ears are erogenous zones thanks to their thin skin and numerous nerve endings, and that fun in real life often translates well to screen too.
Plus to get to the ear, one must get close. Allowing anyone near your face is a sign of trust in my book. You can immediately tell when a character isn't sure they should allow it (even if they might want it). The neck scrunch is an instant tell.
The Heart of Tsukuyomi
But all of those more sultry ear-focused actions carry a different connotation than their more affectionate cousin. Yeah, we'll go with that word. In simple terms, ear touches are more likely to be sweet and "aww" inducing rather than hot and steamy. While they can lead to other things, most of the time they are just a casual touch.
Now that doesn't mean all of our casually touchy people tend to do it! Even characters that are extremely touchy and casual about physical affection may not do it.
Perfect 10 Liners
(Disclaimer: Faifa might do it at some point, but he's far more likely to do a head grab. I didn't find a casual ear touch for him. I lost that bet.)
Ear touching is a fairly personal habit (even if scripted). So it's not unusual to see the SAME character do it on more than one occasion.
Ballboy Tactics
And sometimes, we have to wonder...how much of that is the personal habit of the actor themselves leaking in?
Revenged Love
Especially when it starts showing up in the BTS videos.
In Chi Cheng's case, TXN is doing it all the time in both the BTS and series.
I almost think the crew just decided to roll with it 😂. Just call it another Chi Cheng staple. If he's not picking Suowei up or putting his hand around his throat, then his hand is probably somewhere near his ear. And I'll let you decide how many of those were initially scripted.
In any case, it's a gesture that says "I see you. I'm here with you. I WANT you....and everything that comes with you."
Monster Next Door
That said, there's no rule that it can't happen simultaneously with other actions.
You are Mine
But despite the action's adorable nature, I did run into a slight problem writing this post. It appears that ear touches, like hand holding, are something that just doesn't stick in my brain. So after the (mostly recent) ones above, I had nothing. I couldn't remember any. So I had to outsource this time.
Thanks to the mutuals who helped me track the following down. You all are rock stars!
Kiseki: Dear to Me
Secrets Happened on Litchi Island
Not Me
Jun and Jun (guests in ep 5)
There are definitely more, but my time for today is up. I'll be on the lookout in the future - a new column has been added to the spreadsheet. 🫶
Trope Tuesday: I'll Be Your Guard Dog
I know - it's not Tuesday. But I got distracted by a new project yesterday. So here we are...talking about tropes on a Wednesday.
Many tropes I know I like. Finger in the mouth? Yes, please.
A neon sign? Or book mention? Let me decide if it needs to go on one of my lists. That's a hard call sometimes.
A thrill goes through me anytime I spot a classic trope. Bicycle built for two? I'm down for that every. single. time.
But the real fun is in discovering a trope that I wasn't consciously aware I enjoyed. In the past week, that was a narrative trope.
For the last week, I have been trying (and failing) to GIF certain scenes in Cinderella Closet. In particular, this scene has played on repeat in my head...
Now I always love it when someone stands up for their loved one.
And I'm always going to cheer when someone stands up for themselves too.
Knowing that becomes even harder when they're having to stand up for themselves against their own family.
But when someone is willing to counter their loved one's parents or family? There's a lot of extra layers to that. It's crossing boundaries (usually in a good way) and breaking so many social norms.
I won't delve into my upbringing here, but suffice it to say that - no matter your own age - anything perceived as disobedience or disrespect to your parents was/is considered a moral transgression worthy of divine punishment. Countering your own parents is a big deal. Talking back to someone else's? Might as well count yourself as persona non grata from here on out. It's a strong statement.
So I loved Haruka doggedly defending Hikaru against his parents in Cinderella Closet, and the meltdown that followed.
Because he SHOULDN'T be used to it. But a lot of times we tolerate things, because they are our normal. Hikaru had accepted the judgment as something to be endured and tolerated. We become numb, and it may take an outsider to help us realize that these things were really not acceptable...even from family.
Most weeks, I probably would have just called it an amazing scene and moved on. But this week? I started delving into all of the things I adored about Takara's Treasure with a mutual and mentioned one of my favorite scenes....
And my brain picked up on the pattern. Sure, Taishin didn't know the "rude woman" was Takara's mother. But he fervently defended Takara (and freaked out afterwards once he discovered who she was).
It was something Takara needed, because he BELIEVES his mother. He's not going to defend himself. He thinks it's true. He needed to hear that someone sees him differently.
I began to clock other favorite scenes.
Like when Wine basically says "woman, you don't know what you're talking about" to Faifa's mom.
Or when Kanade drags Mashiro away from his mother in Stay By My Side After the Rain.
Mashiro gave a small sign that he didn't want Kanade to leave, and Kanade went beyond that and just removed Mashiro from the situation when he couldn't do it himself.
And then, even with his own hands shaking, he did it again. Giving Mashiro's mom money for her train home and removing Mashiro once again to leave no room for argument.
So here's to all of the characters that act as guard dogs and defend their loved ones when they can't defend themselves. Y'all are heroes in my book.
This whole sequence was written by a genius.
