this pale pink ceremonial dress, which appears at the end of “phantom menace”, shows many signs of naboo fashion, as well as uses symbolism in the many intricate parts of the piece. for example, there is a naboo emblem that hangs from the banner around padmé’s neck and the plain white dress symbolizes pure happiness for the peace on naboo.
the concept design for this costume, done by iain mccaig, show the development of the piece into what it became. below, i’ll talk about the historical influences of the piece, which can also been seen in the concept drawings.
first, the myriad silk pink cape that padmé wears. so, the flowery flow of the cape represents a type of flower found in padmé’s home village, flowers that bloom once every 88 years, showing how the new peace is the same as a celebration of the flowers blooming. another fun fact: these flowers also look like traditional japanese cherry blossoms!
another historical influence for this piece is late elizabethan era fashion, as well as traditional geisha parasols, both seen in the aureate fan padmé wears. the scrolling vine embroidery, ivory organize fabric, and decorative spike tips all work together in the fan to pull together the piece. the fan represents continuity, according to ancient naboo fashion.
something else to mention about this piece is the resemblance to the ceremonial white dress princess leia wears after the battle of yavin IV. both wear white, floor length dresses with elaborate braids and simple jewelry. this isn’t the first time you see a resemblance: i’ve talked about it before in the geonosis piece. like mother like daughter.
padmé’s hair in this outfit consists of a bun with five crescent shaped sections and a simple silver jeweled headdress with a royal diadem. the effect looks like a bow, reminding me of the 1910s hairstyles.
the makeup on padmé’s face is inspired by geisha’s white makeup originating from the heian period. the geisha wore the makeup in order to highlight their facial expressions due to the poor lighting of the period and because they performed at night. padmé wore the makeup to represent ceremony and happiness.
the headpiece that padmé wears resealables antique bollywood headdresses, or an antique maang tikka. a maang tikka is a piece of jewelry worn by indian women in the forehead to give the wearer, usually a bride, wisdom, power, and will.
overall, i think this piece is so beautiful and graceful, and gives padmé a way to show her extensive style and evolving wardrobe. it is so different from the other, more regal looks in “phantom menace”, but i think it works for the celebration. and i always love a callback to leia so.
