I’m thinking about COVID-19’s impact on U.S. politics
How do Americans look grocery store employees in the eye and think, you don’t deserve a living wage even though my life depends on you?
How do Americans file for unemployment and think, gah the stupid government is too big. We can’t afford X. Also, give me $$. I lost my job?
How do Americans apply for Medicaid while thinking Medicare for All isn’t feasible, less expensive, and more reliable than employer-run health care?
How do Americans beg their landlords to cut them slack during these hard times but not support federal rent control?
How do Americans get quarantined because they’re sick but not support guaranteed paid time off?
As Americans are forced to reconcile with these self-contradictions, I think this pandemic will shift the country’s ideology to the left. The bigger question is, will it be the Democratic or Republican Party that catches on first? Trump is already signaling it might be time to expand Medicare and Medicaid. This is common knowledge for leftists but if the Republican Party somehow becomes known for expanding health coverage amid a pandemic, it will absolutely end the Democratic Party.
The presidential primary in NY has been cancelled and now other states are considering that as an option too. As a New Yorker, i'm just left speechless at how easy it was to have my primary vote taken from me. My community right now struggles to survive the impact of Covid-19 and it feels like there is no political party out there caring about us. The cancellation of the primary feels like a final blow. Any thoughts on how to deal with election and pandemic stress?
This really is a hard time in politics. I empathize with you. It’s important to stay in-the-know while understanding your personal limits.
Take a social media break to focus on your mental and emotional health
Read a book. Stay educated on politics in a less toxic space
Go on a walk to clear your mind
Watch that documentary you never got around to
Dive into an old (or new!) hobby
Be kind to everyone you meet. Times are hard enough
Call a friend or family member to check in
When you’re up to it, join a local activist group fighting for change
As a great Senator once said, “never lose your sense of outrage”
We will get through this, but only together
Unlike other pandemics experienced globally, the COVID-19 Pandemic has brought into light the misfortune of having delayed communication on…
