Once more I am thinking about a portrait artist of the year au. Ed, Zheng, and Jackie are the celebrity sitters. Stede has taken up painting after his divorce, and his work is charming and very weird. Ed doesn't pick Stede's portrait (Mary's is too good not to pick)... but he does pick Stede.
Zheng can't decide between the paintings by Jim, Oluwande, and Archie. In the end, all their paintings wind up in her home anyways (and all the artists in her bed.) Olu's painting would have been better, but he was distracted trying to keep Jim hidden from Jackie.
Jackie brings the Swede as her "something meaningful to you" and has him sit in her lap. She finishes the day with two new husbands, but not before a giant fistfight breaks out and Lucius is doused in wine. He does make the best portrait, though.
Lucius wins his heat and Pete immediately rushes him when he's announced as the winner, weeping and jumping up and down. Lucius paints him as his trial commission and that gets him the win in the final.
His reward was meant to be a commission of Ned Low, but Low was disgraced for union busting and unfair labor practices (look let me dream) and instead he makes a portrait of Abshir, who has taken the world by storm.
From Behind the scenes at the finals of Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2020, Series 7, by the artist Curtis Holder:
Eddie Izzard is a creative person with different public personas, so I knew it would be a challenge to capture her on paper. While sketching we talked about gender identity and her decision to use female pronouns. Her openness inspired me to focus the portrait entirely on her eyes which are a magnificent blue. They were the thing I fell in love with as we chatted. Eddie was funny, expressive and fascinating to listen to, and although her body moved a lot, her eyes remained focused. I cut the top off the portrait off at the end to give it the cinematic composition I felt it needed, hoping to emphasise Eddie’s dramatic eyes and character.
It was a real thrill having my portrait chosen by Eddie, as throughout the competition I’d been able to correctly predict which artist’s portrait each of my sitters would choose. In the final I really couldn’t tell who it would be, so it was an honour to hear Eddie had made an emotional connection with my portrayal of her.
You can watch Eddie Izzard’s episode —episode 10 of series 7 — on either YouTube or tubi for free.
