I’m starting Our Flag Means Death tomorrow 🥳. Technically I watched the first nine minutes today but I have to get up early tomorrow so now I’m in bed, but from what I saw… Stede is iconic, I love the library he’s set up for a fully illiterate crew, the literal ball room and how proud he was of that one little plant he ‘pillaged’ from that fishing boat. If the show’s THAT funny in just nine minutes (I mean, the sewing circle they’ve got set up is brilliant), I can’t wait for the rest of the show 🥳.
sorry but once you notice how often ppl use a southern accent as shorthand for being unintelligent you can never unsee it. classism is baked so deeply and why are you acting like anyone who talks the way my grandfather talks is stupid.
Something something the worst thing Ed did in his Kraken era wasn’t shooting Izzy, it was pushing Lucius overboard, and yet that rarely comes up when people talk about it.

I want to send a lovely letter to one of the people who truly shaped this fandom with her incredible meta, @glamaphonic. I don't care how much time has passed, Glam's posts about the show will ALWAYS be some of the best of the best. I hold her completely responsible for me falling as in love with the show as I did. Her insight and thoughtfulness is just unmatched, and she was always helping me think about the show and characters in new ways. (Not to mention she’s also just incredibly kind and funny and a wonderful person all around.) She may not be as active in the fandom anymore, but to me she will always be one of the OFMD greats. 💖

the more time you spend in active recovery from any given self destructive behavior or addiction the more you understand the common conception of the "relapse" as defined by a broken "streak" to be, like, so bad for one's own well-being that it would be funny if it weren't resulting in just a lot of misery and death
I told my girlfriend to think of quitting vaping as training her endurance by seeing how long she can run before she gets tired, then doing it again and hoping to go further next time. She said it really helped her.
This is the stages of change model, with each circle being a part of the process of growth. You'll notice how relapse is not a failing of the model, or a set back, but an active step in continuing to grow and change. Everytime you relapse, you learn something; maybe a certain time of year is difficult for you. Maybe certain people push you back into the habit. Maybe your other coping skills/replacement habits didn't work how you wanted and you need to strengthen them, or develop new ones. Maybe it's not quite as clear cut and you need to spend the time figuring out what exactly went wrong so you can catch it next time. It doesn't matter the exact lesson, but it's part of the process.
''what if you regret it'' then you will expirience regret - a normal and unavoidable part of the human expirience.
I provide obstetric care, including abortions, and this is a conversation I have on a regular basis at work, whether it's about contraception or a pregnancy or HRT or whatever, and it's so hard to predict regret. I tell people that and I hope they remember me, years down the line, whether or not they regret their decision, reminding them to be kind to the past self that made that decision.
i do think the negative interpretations of "im probably nonbinary but i have a job right now" are kind of reaching. it's obviously a waste of time to theorize the op's intended meaning, so instead i think it's better to recognize how the phrase can be a useful framing device to criticize how much of a fucking hassle it is to get gendered correctly. "but i have a job" e.g. will face discrimination that could threaten livelihood; e.g. don't have the mental bandwidth to explain gender to others; e.g. don't have the time and energy for the soul-searching necessary to confirm. all three of these are labor issues. yes you could interpret it as "but being nonbinary isn't important enough to worry about", despite that being a blatantly bad-faith read. it's more useful to interpret it as "but being publicly nonbinary requires a lot of social effort that, in many cultural contexts, will create more problems that you can't afford to deal with". like cmon it's a really good jumping off point for productive conversations about queer labor rights

Pleasure is good. If you’re not hurting anyone, “because it feels good” is a perfectly valid reason to do something! Eat that treat because it’s delicious. Touch yourself. Take a nap in the afternoon. Buy a really nice pillow if you can swing it. It’s literally fine. Sleep with whoever you like. Pleasure is good. Suffering unnecessarily doesn’t make you more worthy. I’m not a Christian, I have no interest in denying myself earthly pleasures. Stoicism is boring and gets you nothing.

You actually cannot skip to being good at a creative endeavour that you haven't put much practice into. You cannot trick your way out of the 'knows that your work is not what you want it to be but don't know how to improve it' stage by planning or reading or talking about it really really hard. At some point you just have to craft through it until your brain finds it's own unique way back to the 'everything I make slaps' stage and be prepared to start the cycle all over again. You just have to make that project you're excited about slightly less good than you want it to be. (Says this standing in a pool of blood and covered in blood and also coughing up a little blood)
