Oh gosh you know what, I don't RECALL it actually being a canon thing, but, like, I hear it SO CLEARLY in my head being said in Rupert's voice that I really HONESTLY cannot say if it happened or not! I haven't watched the series in forever so my memory is a bit spotty.

But yeah, I don't know where it started or why, but yeah, it is kind of cute, LOL.

Anyone know where this pet name came from? Sorry I'm not much help, Nonny!

Papa Lestrade in my current WIP:

My parents were harsh about gay people, politics, religion. All the inner workings of a very close-minded person.   “But, I learned, and I changed my views as my perspective was… broadened, per se. Hell Sherlock, I’m not even entirely straight myself. You would have even laughed if you saw me back in university,” the younger man looked at him with nothing but awe,”All I’m saying is that you can be as honest as you want with me. I won’t treat you differently for gender or sexuality, promise.”

the first time i saw this scene i laughed and went on with it and just thought - poor gavin

but now im watching it all again , its like such a special scene because Greg loves Sherlock so much ??

sherlock is so much more to him than just a detective like theyve known each other 10 years, and when sherlock 'dies' he is devastated? what all must he have felt like - i couldnt do one thing for him? do you think he blamed himself as he listened to donovan and tried to arrest him ? ik he didnt want to do it, but he just couldnt throw her suspicions away but he thinks indirectly he was responsible?

when he comes back, he says nothing, nothing at all except - oh you bastard and hugs him hard. the look on sherlocks face is surprise because he thought that lestrade too would be angry and take it out on him but he doesnt do that. he gives off pure relief and happiness . when anderson used to discuss theories with him, he would listen to all of it thinking- is that sherlocks style ? could he really do it ? he would allow himself a few minutes of hope thinking maybe anderson is right these trails do show something, but then he would pull himself back up to the harsh reality and pull on the papa lestrade face of responsibility and just kind of shrugs off anderson and tells him to move on too.

now, in this particular scene, he has done so much hardwork for like so many months. he was determined to put the stop at that burglery completely . but as soon as that text reaches him, he abandones everything? he gets that flashback kinda of sherlock dying and the helplessness he felt. now he leaves everything with donovan, abandones his credit, cause all of it doesnt matter if sherlock is in danger. he runs towards sherlock, cause he cant bear with the fact that sherlock maybe dying again and i still couldnt do anything.

he just could not lose him again.

and that makes me tear my heart out.

however, when he sees what sherlock was upto, and the look of pure relief along with that exasperation, it amuses me like how much of a dad he is to him. he's all like- oh god i so want to kill this idiot but he's my son i gotta protect him
