Predictions for Re:ZERO arc 10

Mix of multiple messy threads I wrote combined together.

The Anime's Inversion

I think, fundamentally, the anime flipped over what I think is the real interpretation of arc 3 in the light novel, along with its implications for the final three arcs, especially Emilia and Subaru's second parting, which I think might happen this arc.

Tappei will convey certain views about the arc in his Q&As, but I don't think they should be taken at face value.

The tl;dr is the image Emilia develops of Subaru after arc 3, the things she's kept out of the loop on, and her general apathy, or lack of full cognizance, regarding the cost Subaru bore at the start of the arc.

We get a small taste that she knows it, at least deep in her subconscious, as her Taste of Death dialogue in the LN reveals, though the anime cuts some lines. I think this will be connected to her third trial line, where she says, "I've thought it several times, but the nightmare has truly come. So I will say it."

And she's very likely saying this to Subaru, in an effort to push him away for his sake, like she did in arc 3. In arc 3, however, she did it out of insecurity and, in part, for her own selfish reasons, as LN 9 reveals. By contrast, in arc 10 she'll likely do it out of conviction after realizing her feelings. The arc 9 line where she feels love for him but can't place it can't be coincidental, considering how many other things arc 10 is paralleling with arc 9. Plus, consider the stuff she says to Felt near the start of arc 10.

Emilia's Flippancy

She's shown to be flippant about things she shouldn't be so flippant about, and not nearly angry enough at things she ought to have been angry about. Repeatedly, multiple characters have pointed out how Emilia's nature makes things hard for Subaru. Felt thinks this at the start of arc 10 as well: her blatant faith in him, how she thinks he can't die, and so on. In contrast to Subaru thinking about how horrific he felt at the start of arc 3, Emilia comes off as rather flippant, in large part due to Gluttony messing with memories.

Subaru in arc 10 is suspiciously bordering on his old self at times, taking everything on himself, and the first one to call it out is Rem, in contrast to From Zero Rem, who was the cause of his hero complex. Even in arc 10, he bashes his old self, as if what he did in arc 3 was the height of sin compared to what other people were doing and getting away with. It definitely says something that it seems like he still seeks sympathy for it deep down, because Subaru bearing heroic reveries is bad for him, since it implies him dying all the time and suffering.

That is to say, the "problem" with arc 3 isn't really a problem if Tappei has been intentional about the things left unaddressed regarding Subaru's trauma in that arc, the long-lasting consequences, Emilia's mindset about promises, and the image she has of Subaru, if all of it is for the sake of eventually breaking it all down for her.

So I think Emilia's "turning point" is really going to be more like slowly breaking her down, like what happened to Subaru near the beginning of the story, but likely with far less suffering porn, considering she's Emilia and everything.

The Seal and Promises

Another theory about her attitude regarding promises: the plot twist might be that Emilia should have opened the seal.

Every promise or contract gets broken in arc 4 and is what leads to progress, and the promise that doesn't get made (Echidna's) is also painted in a bad light. Only Emilia is all "I have no regrets" when it came to her promise with Fortuna that Pandora asked her to break. But there's no reason for her to have regrets about it, because Fortuna was already dead and Pandora, as the arc's villain, implied that opening the seal would be far worse than Emilia freezing everything (and the Black Serpent already killed a bunch of elves). When you've lost everything and the promise to your dead mom is the only thing you have left, why wouldn't you keep it?

Grappling with regret only makes sense when there's an alternative path presented to you that wasn't so bad and you didn't take it. There need to be real tradeoffs. Unlike Subaru, she doesn't really face such tradeoffs. My belief is that Fortuna might not have been that good of a person and might have had selfish reasons for not opening the seal. Combined with the RbD reveal and the Puck contract details, the other thing that might potentially bring about disillusionment for her regarding her belief in promises might be the promise she made to her mother.

Pandora parallels Subaru in the Hope symbolism, and they both share dialogue in the same arc: "There is a time and place for keeping promises."

The issue, however, is that Pandora is a Witch and the way she went about trying to get Emilia to open the seal. Re:ZERO isn't very consequentialist or utilitarian in its morality, so it's "Pandora bad because the way she went about things bad," meaning Emilia is allowed to set aside a whole bunch of practical shit (like in arc 3) so Tappei can prop up her value system, and the one time he doesn't do that is also the only time she gets character development.

If the seal is akin to Pandora's Jar in Greek mythology, the seal is supposed to unleash all evils and vices out into the world, but what remains is Hope (i.e., Elpis). This would contradict the points above, but it's interesting to think about what it might mean.

Pandora's Role

Pandora is aroused by seeing people struggle against the odds. That's what the description of her reaction strongly implies when she sees Fortuna and Geuse go up against Regulus, and if she was the one to make the Whale disappear in arc 3 in the Greed of a Pig loop (his most difficult and mentally damaging loop in that arc), it's probably her role to shape events to make Subaru suffer as much as possible, and not really Echidna's.

The Knightly Oath

There's also Subaru's knightly oath to Emilia. Frankly, I think it's just plain bad for him and not something that should be put on a pedestal. It socially obligates Subaru to die for Emilia, and it's also bad that she has this unrealistic image of him, which is again set up for the RbD reveal, where she becomes more cynical about promises or the like.

Healthy Selfishness

Subaru should learn to put his foot down. Emilia, at the very least, should think back to how she hurt him back then, how she had taken his kindness for granted once and been punished for her naivety. Emilia never self-reflects object-level stuff, it's always vague thematic garbage. She doesn't behave like a real person so to speak. That will be her next development, probably paralleling Subaru himself becoming more human.

Living Over the Dead

In arc 10-19, Subaru thinks about "living over the dead" when thinking about Ferris breaking the promise to Crusch, because he prioritized Crusch over the dead Fourier, which was something Fourier himself would have wanted. This is something Subaru does all the time: break promises for the sake of the living, something Emilia and Beatrice struggle to accept (because they're a little stupid). This cannot be unrelated to the promise she made to Fortuna and RbD reveal.

More Predictions

At that time, Crusch had been preparing for the behemoth undertaking of subjugating the White Whale. Yet, she continued to patiently face the ignorant, vapid, insolent Subaru. In the end, she lent her ears to Subaru's words, and aided him with her power to help realize his ambitions.

I seriously don't get why arc 3 Subaru keeps getting bashed over and over like this. I mean, it's his POV, but he seriously lacks the big picture regarding the Kingdom. Rather than call himself names, he should be blaming others (like Roswaal or Puck) for not having prepared even a bit against the Cult. I think in general he just keeps making up for others' failures, and the aura monster arc 6 loop was definitely foreshadowing something.

The Emilia pose with her finger pointed to the heavens is also kinda red-flag prose ("heaven" = bad) for what may transpire soon, that plus her just listing all of Subaru's achievements but never having questioned it properly. This was my biggest issue with her in arcs 3 and 4, and now her saying they're not gonna lose. I'm somewhat confident the Emilia camp will break apart this arc, and while on the surface she's showing resolve against Bordeux's ruse, she'll very likely lose it by the end of the arc seeing what's befallen Subaru.

Very likely a similar ending to arc 9. In arc 9, she and Subaru aren't facing each other when Rem kills him: Al is looking at Subaru, saying he hates him, Rem is killing Subaru, Subaru's face averted from Emilia. Emilia also feels an emotion stronger than rage at Regulus or Al toward Subaru (love) but couldn't place it.

This arc's tragedy (tragic heroism much? It could be Subaru and Reinhard's, since they're the narrative heroes, but maybe even Emilia's) will be her and Subaru facing each other (instead of Subaru's face averted), Emilia having placed her feelings (instead of "She did not understand it whatsoever") but forced to push him away (paralleling arc 3, where they first parted).

Christ and Self-Erasure

The biggest difference between Jesus and Subaru is that Jesus is aware that the others are sinners and forgives them. That's why he works as a scapegoat and as a symbol. Subaru not only dies but takes everything on himself. He twists everything to make it his fault. Emilia's self-serving and cruel behavior toward him from the start of LN 4, his fault. Julius's classist tirade and the royal guard's pettiness, his fault. He has to apologize over and over again for others' sins. That isn't a Christ-like figure, that's self-abandonment, or rather, self-erasure, and it's extremely problematic that Emilia just seems to take it for granted that Subaru came back and confessed to her and doesn't question how he pulled it all off. This arc will be her punishment, if Bordeux's points are anything to go by.

OH. MY. GOD. You HAVE to watch this 7 minute NBC Meet The Press clip.

Before he walked out of the interview, Trump was totally out of control - he was leaning forward with his hands out like he wanted to throttle Kristen Welker. He called her dirty and crooked multiple times, along with Meet the Press and NBC.

HE SAID COPS WERE DIRTY - and it sounded like he meant ALL cops are dirty. He said the Capitol Police were dirty. He said that the FBI was dirty.

He was screaming about Comey being in charge of the FBI during the J6 Insurrection, when Comey had been FIRED for FOUR years - Trump had named a NEW Director, and HE and WRAY had been in charge of the FBI for those FOUR YEARS.

Comey was nowhere around. And Biden had not even taken office yet. So NOBODY ordered hundreds of FBI agents to "lead innocent tourists" into the Capitol and start a riot. NOBODY ordered FBI agents to beat up fellow COPS.

UNLESS, of course, it was TRUMP AND WRAY who ordered the FBI to ramp things up, in order to stop the Certification of the Election, and stage a coup to keep Trump in office. But NAH, they wouldn't do a thing like THAT.

I mean, even though he does seem to project all his OTHER schemes onto Democrats....

Trump STILL wants to pay off the J6 insurrectionists. Even though his AG, Todd Blanche, is furiously denying that the $1.8 BILLION J6 Slush will go forward, Trump refused in this interveiw to back down from it.

And said something telling. He named HIMSELF among those who were "victimized" by *ahem* "Sleepy Joe" Biden (really, Donnie?) He obviously wants that money for HIMSELF.

And he insisted, AGAIN, that he "won in a landslide" in 2020, but that the election was "rigged" against him.

AGAIN people. HE was President, and had been in charge for FOUR YEARS.

WHO, exactly, COULD have rigged a NATIONWIDE election???

And he claimed AGAIN that he had EVIDENCE. Well, where is it? Since he was re-elected, he has had a year and a half to produce any NEW evidence. He hasn't. There ISN'T any. There never WAS. After the 2020 election, WHILE HE WAS STILL PRESIDENT, his lawyers, like Rudy, brought 64 challenges before the courts - and LOST every single one.

And he keeps blaming "The Weaponized Biden DOJ". A REMINDER. The DOJ prosecutes and defends cases. BUT a Judge, or panel of Judges, or a Jury DECIDES the case, and determines GUILT. NOT THE DOJ. Juries are made up of independent CITIZENS, and the DOJ can challenge the seating of ANY of the members. And Judges, as we have seen, seldom rule politically. Even TRUMP appointed Judges have ruled against him, and his followers, and his schemes.

Trump's AG, Todd Blanche, is realizing this at last. He is in real trouble. He and Bondi are BOTH not only in danger of being disbarred, but of facing charges for their actions as Attorneys General. Sure. You can weaponize the DOJ. But that is illegal. And they will personally pay for it.

Trump, though, ignores all of this. It is obvious that he BELIEVES the venom he is literally spitting. He has well and truly lost his mind.

All he wants to do anymore is redecorate, and glorify himself, and steal money any way he can. He does not even bother to hide it anymore. He can't. He does not have the capacity to even ACT in a sane matter any more.

Watch to the end of this 7 minute clip, when he walks off.

Gotta hand it to Kristen Welker. She sat there calmly responding to his lunatic ravings and personal attacks without flinching. Now THAT is a professional journalist. THAT is the American Free Press, the BEST in the world.

Oh by the way. Speaking of his handlers. They insisted on the interview happening in a barn with a tin roof. During a heavy rainstorm. That is all the noise you hear in the background.

And yes, Kristen Welker came to WISCONSIN to do the interview at TRUMP'S CONVENIENCE.

Maybe he was in a foul mood because the turnout for his "Farmer's Roundtable" was tiny and the participants were not enthusiastic. But then he had kept them waiting over an hour hoping more people would show up.

After he walked out of the interview, he went straight to his Bedminster golf resort in New Jersey. His favorite lawyer, Alina Habba posted a video of his arrival, with the words, "Welcome Home, POTUS."

Um. Since when is Bedminster his home? Or hers?

Battat takes a deep breath and adjusts the red bowtie of his costume. Putting one hand on the door, he psyches himself up, before finally pushing the door open. "Heyyy! Boss! Tenna!" He opens his arms wide. "You called?"

"𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐞!" Tenna beckons with a smile. "Come here and sit down! I want you to read the 𝓶𝓪𝓼𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓹𝓲𝓮𝓬𝓮 I just wrote!"

Battat walks over to the desk and sits down in front of the CRT. "What did you write, boss? Some story?"

"A contract!"

"A contract? For who?"

"Spamton! It did take some sweet talk and convincing, but he finally agreed to marry me!"

"Marry???" Battat's heart nearly stops. How did he not know about their romance? This kind of thing would be hard to hide from him, given he's... well, Mike.

"Yes, MARRY!" Tenna giggles. "The most binding of contracts. I've even convinced him to drop the idea of a prenup!" Tenna extends the contract for Mike to take and read.

The disguised pippins seems confused about what he reads on the piece of paper. "Hold on... is this marriage about love or..."

"Don't be silly, Mike. 𝕷𝖔𝖛𝖊? In showbiz? 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗛𝗜𝗠? God no. I just want his little secret... and his assets. Everything he owns, mine. Including his little... 𝚖𝚢𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚛𝚢 𝚋𝚎𝚗𝚎𝚏𝚊𝚌𝚝𝚘𝚛..." He lets out a low chuckle as he taps his screen with a finger, feeling like a genius.

"I... see..." he scratches the back of his head. "That sounds... splendid!" His tone is not very convincing, but Tenna is too into the moment to notice.

"Is it not!?"

"Hey boss... what are your thoughts on...." Battat lets his personal curiosity slip. "Extramarital affairs...?"

"...What?"

"Tato. Are you gonna drink that?"

Battat snaps out of the deep contemplation he's in and looks at Payoff. "Uh, yeah. Actually, no, do you want it?"

"Sure!!!" The orange pippins gladly takes the unfinished drink, wondering if drinking it in the same spot as Battat counts as an indirect kiss.

"You know, I've been wondering if maybe there were some actual feelings in that marriage between Tenna and Spamton."

"How come? Seems pretty obvious it was all just about greed from what you told me..."

Battat furrows his eyebrows. "Tenna has been shut in his room for a week now. And he doesn't even let me in. He doesn't let any of the Mikes in!"

"That's rough..." Payoff tries to imagine what he would be like if Battat divorced him, but gets too caught up in the fantasy of getting married to him first.

"And when I knock sometimes, he goes silent. Cause I do hear him yell and... maybe throw stuff around? It's hard to tell since I've not been inside. And..." Battat cuts himself off after looking at Payoff, whose face is now red and who is so obviously currently in daydreamland. Battat thinks, "His ass is not listening..."

"𝙷𝙾𝚆 𝙲𝙾𝚄𝙻𝙳 𝙷𝙴 𝙻𝙴𝙰𝚅𝙴 𝙼𝙴?"

Tenna is on the floor on all fours, his claws digging into his carpet.

"𝚃𝙷𝙰𝚃 𝚂𝙲𝙰𝙼𝙼𝙴𝚁. 𝚃𝙷𝙰𝚃 𝙲𝙾𝙽 𝙰𝚁𝚃𝙸𝚂𝚃. 𝙷𝙴 𝙺𝙽𝙴𝚆 𝚆𝙷𝙰𝚃 𝙷𝙴 𝚆𝙰𝚂 𝙳𝙾𝙸𝙽𝙶, 𝚃𝙷𝙰𝚃 𝚆𝙰𝚂 𝚃𝙾𝙾 𝙿𝙴𝚁𝙵𝙴𝙲𝚃𝙻𝚈 𝚃𝙸𝙼𝙴𝙳."

He pulls his hands down, ripping the carpet. Though, that does not change much to its already beyond destroyed state. The entire room's floor has scratches all over it. His walls, dented, covered in holes punched into the drywall, with visible item impacts, wallpaper in shambles. Nearly all his furniture lies in ruin, most of it unrecognizable.

Tenna lets himself fall on his side, exhausted. Once more, he will be sleeping on the floor. Not out of a lack of bed, but out of a lack of energy and will to get in it.

"𝚃𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚖𝚊𝚒𝚕𝚖𝚊𝚗… 𝚍𝚒𝚍 𝚑𝚎 𝚏𝚒𝚐𝚞𝚛𝚎 𝚒𝚝 𝚘𝚞𝚝? 𝙳𝚒𝚍 𝚑𝚎 𝚏𝚒𝚐𝚞𝚛𝚎 𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚠𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚖𝚊𝚛𝚛𝚒𝚊𝚐𝚎 𝚠𝚊𝚜 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚊𝚋𝚘𝚞𝚝…" He has echoed those questions like a broken record spinning in his mind's phonograph for a week now. "𝚆𝚑𝚢? 𝚆𝚑𝚢? 𝚆𝚑𝚢? 𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚝𝚒𝚙𝚙𝚎𝚍 𝚑𝚒𝚖 𝚘𝚏𝚏? 𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚖𝚒𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚔𝚎 𝚍𝚒𝚍 𝙸 𝚖𝚊𝚔𝚎? 𝚆𝚊𝚜 𝙸 𝚝𝚘𝚘 𝚎𝚊𝚐𝚎𝚛? 𝚆𝚊𝚜 𝙸 𝚝𝚘𝚘 𝚏𝚘𝚛𝚌𝚎𝚏𝚞𝚕? 𝙳𝚒𝚍 𝙸 𝚋𝚎𝚝𝚛𝚊𝚢 𝚖𝚢𝚜𝚎𝚕𝚏 𝚠𝚑𝚒𝚕𝚎 𝚍𝚛𝚞𝚗𝚔? 𝙳𝚒𝚍 𝙸 𝚗𝚘𝚝 𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚢 𝚖𝚢 𝚑𝚞𝚜𝚋𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚛𝚘𝚕𝚎 𝚠𝚎𝚕𝚕 𝚎𝚗𝚘𝚞𝚐𝚑? Only silence replies.

"Tenna's coming, split!"

The kids run off to hide behind the nearest corner. Tenna walks into the backstage hallway in emotional shambles.

"𝚆𝚑𝚢… 𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚍𝚒𝚍 𝙸 𝚍𝚘 𝚝𝚘 𝚍𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚛𝚟𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚜, 𝚠𝚑𝚊𝚝…" He notices the pipis on the floor. "What are you doing here, dear? I am pretty sure I..." He looks to the side at the closet. "You fell out." He leans forward, grabbing the pipis.

A 'ping!' comes from Kris' pocket and all three teenagers' hearts drop. Susie whisper yells "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!?"

The dealmaker flies out, and Kris tries to grab it, then Susie, then Ralsei, but they all fail as the pair of glasses dodges all their attempts. It flies off towards Tenna, and they all silently elect not to follow it, staying silently in their hiding spots, hoping that Tenna won't come check where that thing came from.

The dealmaker stops a few feet away from the CRT and turns into Spamton. "[TRASH HEAP] YOU KEPT IT."

Tenna looks at him. There is a long silence, and then, Tenna starts laughing. "Mailman!" His laugh echoes in the empty hall, making him sound louder than he actually is. "What a shadow crystal will do to a man, huh?"

"You [knowledge is power!]?"

"Of course I know. It's fairly obvious just looking at you. I've got myself one too." Tenna crouches. "It's been so long, hasn't it?"

"IT HAS. YOU ARE NOT [Deals That'll Turn You Mad]?"

"Mad? Why would I be, my love?"

"I [Run the Risk] away without a [WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS]."

"Hey. The past is in the past! C'mere now." Tenna extends his hand for Spamton to jump in, and the spam mail doesn't wait to do that. Tenna stands up, bringing him closer to his face. "You've changed so much, big shot. Barely recognizable. But, look. I've kept her. Our daughter."

Tenna shows him the pippis he's holding with his other hand. "Spamton, do you know what happens now?"

"What [Happening Of The century!]?"

Tenna chuckles, before shutting his hand on the pippis. The cracking sound only lasts an instant, but its echo resonates. Spamton stares at it, horrified.

"𝙻𝚒𝚔𝚎 𝙸 𝚜𝚊𝚒𝚍, 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚙𝚊𝚜𝚝 𝚒𝚜 𝚒𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚙𝚊𝚜𝚝. 𝚂𝚑𝚎 𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚢𝚜 𝚒𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚙𝚊𝚜𝚝. 𝙰𝚗𝚍 𝚢𝚘𝚞…"

Spamton turns back into the dealmaker, attempting to fly away, but Tenna closes his hand faster. The glasses crack, and Spamton turns back into himself. Tenna's fist barely moves from the change in size happening in it, but multiple cracking sounds escape it.

"𝚈𝚘𝚞 𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚢 𝚒𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚙𝚊𝚜𝚝 𝚝𝚘𝚘. 𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚠𝚊𝚜 𝚒𝚝 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚞𝚜𝚎𝚍 𝚝𝚘 𝚜𝚊𝚢?" Tenna turns his hand downward, letting go of the broken puppet. "𝚆𝚊𝚝𝚌𝚑 𝚖𝚎 𝚏𝚕𝚢, 𝙼𝚊𝚖𝚊!" He laughs as the corpse hits the floor.
