Warforged (Eberron)
Octagram swinging around his neck, Kuduth strode into the workshop to confront its lone occupant, bent over the work desk.
"Dox, I have a question for you."
"Preacher, if you haven't noticed, I am rather busy with some important work at the moment. Besides, what could a woman of the Sovereigns want with a godless warforged such as myself? A theological question of where our souls came from? A question of why I cannot see Boldrei's divine hand in everything? Or do you just need my alchemical expertise in creating some of your "holy" water?"
Kuduth ignored the metal man's verbal jab and got straight to the point.
"You're self-confessed as being, and I quote, 'an evil bastard, manipulative to the core, and driven to carve a homeland out for my race.' So why are you in a Q'barran frontier town on the edge of the Basura Swamp when it is as far from the Mournlands as possible?"
The Warforged set down his work momentarily, fixing his gaze clearly on the cleric of Dol Arrah. Kuduth found almost everything about Dox to be unnatural, and the Cyran regimental seals that were carved into its arm were a painful reminder of the War that made her abandon her homeland.
"I'm ruthless Kuduth, not heartless. These people need the services of an alchemist and in return, I get to observe how the community functions. One day, my people will need that knowledge themselves. And also, I happen to like this town, not unlike how I feel about yourself and Corrash. Now, if we are going to engage in discussion, could you at least pass me that box of gears? I need to finish this clockwork unicorn for Jen's first birthday."
Racial Traits
- +2 Con, +2 Int, -2 Cha: Warforged are quick learners who were made to be durable, but they often have the mindset of soldiers, not politicians. - Living Construct Subtype: Warforged combine aspects of both living beings and magically animated objects. See pg 23 of the 3.5 Eberron Campaign. Note that in Pathfinder, all constructs are subject to critical hits and sneak attacks, so Warforged are not unique in this regards. - Medium: As medium constructs, Warforged have no special bonuses or penalties due to size. - Speed: Warforged base land speed is 30 feet. - Composite Plating: The plating used to build a Warforged provides a +2 armour bonus. This plating is not natural armour and does not stack with other effects that give an armour bonus other than natural armour. This composite plating occupies the same space on the body as a suit of armour, preventing the Warforged from wearing armour of any kind. Composite plating also provides a warforged with a 5% arcane spell failure chance, as if the Warforged was wearing light armour.
Warforged Alternate Traits: - Craftsman: As creatures of metal and stone, Warforged are naturally gifted at shaping both materials. A Warforged with this trait gains a +2 racial bonus on all Craft or Profession chekcs to create objects from stone or metal, but the armour bonus of its composite armour and any associated feats is reduced by one. This trait modifies Composite Plating and cannot be selected in combination with another alternate trait that modifies or replaces Composite Plating. - Fearless: Warforged were built to be soldiers ready to die without hesitation. A Warforged with this trait gains a +2 racial bonus on all saving throws against fear effects, but the armour bonus of its composite armour and any associated feats is reduced by one. This trait modifies Composite Plating and cannot be selected in combination with another alternate trait that modifies or replaces Composite Plating. - Unarmored Body: A warforged with this trait gains no armour bonus, can use magic armour, and suffers no arcane spell failure chance. This replaces Composite Plating.
Commentary: The transition from 3.5 to Pathfinder hasn't changed the Warforged too much. Since the resistance to critical hits and sneak attack was dropped for Constructs in Pathfinder, I've dropped it from Warforged as well in exchange for a +2 bonus to intelligence. Likewise, robes and magic armour no longer occupy the same item slot, so I've freed up Warforged with composite armour to wear magic robes. Minor tweak but important. My biggest change was swapping Unarmoured Body from being a feat to being a trait. Part of this was that this feat always seemed to me to be a tax and weak as a feat on its own. Part of it is also a rare concession to 4e since some people were introduced to Eberron where Warforged could wear armour. This allows them to convert their armour-wearing Warforged to Pathfinder with minimal issues.
