So it's performance review time at work and I'm struggling. First because we're supposed to review ourselves for all of 2025... I don't even remember what I did in January much less for the 12 months before that. But more than that, I really hate the new software we're using this time...

We have to rank ourselves 1-5 in like 5 or 6 different areas (taking initiative, crossing things off the list, acting professionally, etc.) with room for comments. And then we have to answer three or four open ended questions about our impact last year and our goals for this year. Not really that different from previous reviews, but the new software has AI built in, and directly under the open ended questions is this:

Guys, an AI built into a program that I've never used or logged into before is gonna answer the "what impact did you make last year" question for me! And then it'll tell me what my goal for this year should be! How exciting, it's like I don't even have to be there for my review!

Out of curiosity, I want to click the button. Out of principle, I won't, but it's really tempting to find out what a program that knows nothing about me, my job, or what I do thinks I should do with my life...

So, I'm a people manager at work, right?

We do biannual performance reviews. One round includes setting the year's goals. The other round is a midyear check point on them.

It is currently the review time. For the January reviews, we request targeted feedback from colleagues who work closely with them, with specific questions.

I manage three people currently. I received feedback from 10 people total on them.

I am currently reading through the feedback responses to prepare for my performance review meetings next week.

LITERALLY HALF OF THE FEEDBACK is just chatgpt regurgitation of the prompts. No substance or examples added on. Just restatement of the prompt in the affirmative.

Feedback is requested to be provided in SBI format (situation - behavior - impact). There are no situations or behaviors in those ones. There are fake ass statements about impact but, again, those are just giving the questions back in the affirmative.

AND!!! I know other managers who are using chatgpt to synthesize the feedback they receive down into a single paragraph or some bullet points.

Garbage in, garbage out.

Fuck. My manager is totally gonna use chatgpt on the feedback they got for me. I hope the feedback providers actually write real things...

Just stumbled on an old performance review from my corporate job and goddamm did I hate myself. I rated myself "Needs improvement" in most areas and "Unacceptable" in others, with an overall rating of "Needs improvement."

My boss gave me several "Outstanding"and "Exceeds expectations" ratings, with an overall "Exceeds expectations."

I was good at my job. I was really good. I got flustered and anxious sometimes, but I knew my shit, sometimes better than the copywriters or client liaisons.

Why the fuck did I hate myself so much? I'm crying for past Christiana. She couldn't see past the lies her brain was telling her.

Also Question: do the underlings get to weigh in on the officers' performance reviews?

That’s a good question. The 360 review is actually a fairly new development in our corporate world, and not necessarily a good technique to use in a military hierarchy, even if the concept did exist in their world. If Katsuko were still with the team, or the team had another veteran, they could be asked to provide feedback, but since Kakashi and Ryouma aren’t even to the halfway points of their rookie years, they may not be considered to have enough context to give good evaluations.

That being said, I can see a case for the person doing the evaluations (Sagara, since she knows Kuroda is biased against Team Six so would do the reviews herself) interviewing Ryouma and Kakashi as part of the process, since there have been some serious concerns raised about the officers, some justified, some not, and the rookies have the most hands-on experience with the officers.

Other sources could be Kurenai, Usagi, Ginta, other team officers they’ve interacted with, Shibata, Benihime, etc.
