I love how out of everybody Nico has ever shadow traveled with literally all them except for Percy say it’s scary and unpredictable and awful and nauseating and migraine inducing and then there’s Percy over here describing it like riding a rollercoaster in the dark and its the most fun thing he’s ever experienced and he thinks it’s something every adhd thrill seeking demigod would love but really everybody but him totally hate it even Will hates it like. This is how I start my essay about how Percico could still win in the long run as the ward nurses drag me into a padded cell

Sometimes it baffles me that a large subsection of the PJO fandom is so rabidly hostile towards any Percy ship that isn’t Percabeth, and then I remember how Richard has tacitly been encouraging this behaviour since TLO. Anyone who has even the slightest potential of being a love interest for Percy has that potential shut down with extreme prejudice:

Rachel is made the Oracle and can never have romantic relationships with anyone. After TLO, the friendship that she and Percy developed over what he thought was his last year alive was thrown out the window.

Calypso is trapped on Ogygia, but Percy ensures her release. Until that’s retconned in HOO, anyway, in a move that makes Percy look like a dick and utterly defangs oaths on the Styx. Not to mention, Calypso “cursing” Annabeth (even though it wasn’t intentional or even conscious), and then being given to Leo to ruin his character arc for good measure.

Reyna isn’t even given a chance; her advances are openly rejected by Percy, which is a rarity, and she’s later made a Hunter for good measure.

Nico, despite the years Percy spent worrying about him, searching for him, and then spending time with him, is now treated like a stranger by Percy, even though TLO left them off as good, even best, friends. To add insult to injury, Nico’s “confession” to Percy is, frankly, insulting and played for laughs, and post-HOO he’s given a new boyfriend he has spoken maybe one sentence to beforehand.

And it’s not even just canon love interests either; anyone who even has the potential of an interesting romance with Percy is pushed aside:

Thalia? She’s a hunter now.

Bianca? Hunter; also she’s killed off the chapter after she and Percy form a solid bond.

Any of the Seven post-SON? Percy only has eyes for Annabeth.

Clarisse? Random new boyfriend.

Grover? Random new girlfriend.

So yeah, it makes total sense that Percabeth stans get so toxic about shipping when Richard insists on isolating Percy like an abusive husband.

Annabeth: This is my boyfriend, Percy. And beside him is his boyfriend, Jason. And beside Jason is his girlfriend, Piper, who is also my girlfriend. And beside Piper is Calypso, who is her girlfriend. And beside Calypso is her friend, Leo, who is also Jason's boyfriend. And beside Leo is his boyfriend Frank. And beside Frank is his girlfriend Hazel. And beside Hazel is her brother, Nico, who is a boyfriend of Leo, Percy, and Jason respectively. And beside Nico is his boyfriend Will, who is also Leo's boyfriend. And standing menacingly behind Nico is Reyna, who is my girlfriend, Piper's girlfriend, and also Jason's girlfriend. I want a fic where Percy is completely gone for Nico.

I want him staring at Nico across the campfire, watching the way the flames throw shadows across his face like the world itself can’t decide how to hold him. I want sparring sessions that turn into Percy letting Nico in closer than he ever should—close enough to catch the faint scent of his shampoo, to feel the heat of him even through armor.

I want them on opposite teams during capture the flag, and Percy growling at his own teammates to leave Nico for him. The idea of anyone else tackling Nico—touching him, hurting him even a little—sets something wild off in him. He knows Nico’s strong enough to win against anyone, but that’s not the point. The point is Percy wants to be the one who gets close.

I want Percy doing anything just to make Nico proud of him. Running himself ragged just to earn a quiet, “Nice work,” like it’s a divine blessing. I want him at home during visits with his mom, secretly deep-diving into Mythomagic forums, memorizing trivia so he has something—anything—to talk to Nico about when he’s back at camp.

And when they finally get together, I want Percy to worship him. Years later, I want him still looking at Nico like he hung the constellations himself. Still desperate for every small touch, every glance. Because even after everything, Percy Jackson loves Nico di Angelo like it’s the first and only thing he’s ever been good at.
