Hai knew how stressful papers could be, especially with a lot of the students working to get through school or having other things that occupied their time so she was more than happy to help another classmate out when she felt they were in need. Plus the fact that mere seconds before she arrived at his spot, he was sleeping, was an indication that he needed this just as much as she did. "You're welcome, can't fall asleep in here right? Not when you have an assignment due." She paused, taking a sip of her drink before sighing. "English Lit paper, I've been so busy with the orchestra that I thought I had another week to get the paper in but it's due tomorrow. At one. Figured if I pulled an all nighter I'd be able to get it done but couldn't do it in my room so here I am."
yuna did not expect to receive a call from the hospital at 10pm on a tuesday night. she was stretching after an hours-long practice in the studio when her phone started to ring incessantly, it took her a minute to comprehend what was said on the other side and without a thought, she was on her way. she hadn’t seen louis in three months and this was the last way she had expected it to happen. she had always loathed hospitals with the entirely of her heart. it brought back memories of a grim childhood spent stuck within those white walls, long empty corridors that seemed to stretch on forever, not a soul she could talk to except for the volunteers that occasionally stopped by with their handful of toys and colour books.
a sigh that she didn’t even know she was holding escaped her when she was finally led to his room by a mild-mannered nurse whose level of calmness contrasted her anxiety. her hand hesitated briefly atop of the doorknob before she mustered the courage to open the door, closing it quietly behind her. she had anticipated something terrible, still the wrenching ache from seeing him like this caught her off guard. it felt like something had taken hold of her heart and twisted it without mercy. keeping her movements as silent as possible, she walked closer to the bed where the fragile man lied. how did he get himself into this mess?
his hair was a disheveled mess, and if it wasn’t for the gentle rise and fall of his chest, he almost looked like he was dead. with the gentleness one would hold a wounded bird, she touched the pale skin on his cheek and brushed a stray strand of hair out of his face. how long would she have to wait until he woke and prove to her he wasn’t as dead as he looked? with her body lowered and arms resting on the edge of the bed, she stared at him intently as hushed words fell from her mouth, “you’re a fucking idiot, lou.”

Here she was again, standing by a hospital vending machine as she tried not to think about what the doctors were doing inside with her unconscious mother. It was the middle of the night, for God’s sake, she couldn’t help thinking as she wrapped an arm around herself, suddenly feeling cold despite wearing a sweatshirt. Yet another OD, Meg thought, not even finding just one emotion inside her to dwell on. She was frustrated, she was mad as hell, she was sad and she was just so goddamn exhausted. How many more times must this scene play out? The warmth from the coffee cup she held in her hand was no longer and she shook herself out of her thoughts in time to throw away the cup and hear a familiar voice calling out her name. “Meg! Meg, hey, you okay?” Harrison asked, and she felt even guiltier now, knowing she probably woke him up from his sleep, but he was the first person she called as soon as she got to the hospital and realized she didn’t want to be alone. “Yeah, I’m--”
Her usual response would have been to say that she was fucking fantastic, that she was just fine and he didn’t have to worry, that she was used to this already and that there wasn’t anything that could comfort her other than a beer but Meg paused then, knowing it wouldn’t be fair for him if she said that. After all, if she couldn’t find comfort in him, she wouldn’t have asked him to come over in the first place. He came as soon as he could, that much she knew because of the short span of time from the call she made to him and the time he arrived, and it wasn’t fair for either of them if she kept burying her feelings down and pretending she’s too good to deal with any of them.
Letting out a shaky exhale, Meg gestured for him to follow her to an abandoned waiting room, so the two of them could, at the very least, have some privacy. She was opening her hands, flattening them out on the arms of the chair before curling them into fists and then opening them up again and then curling them into fists again and that was when Harrison reached over to take both her hands in his, and softly leaned in, waiting patiently until Meg’s stubborn self finally looked up at him -- at those warm brown eyes that made her immediately burst into tears.
“God, fuck--” Megara said, frustrated at herself for letting her emotions run wild like this and she pulled away one of her hands from his to angrily swipe at the tears, not wanting to lose control like this in front of anyone, yet here she was anyway. “I’m just-- I’m just tired, baby,” she admitted, her hands curling into fists again as she looked down at her pajama bottoms. In her rush, all she did was put a sweater over her camisole and put on shoes instead of her fuzzy slippers, and it was pretty funny how small details like the hem of her sweater was unraveling was suddenly noticeable during moments like this.
“She keeps saying she’ll do better, that this time, this fucking time, she’ll stick to it. She’ll be sober and she’ll be clean and she’ll be fine. I never believed her, not once, but... a small part of me... hoped, you know?” Meg said in a small voice, feeling like she was twelve years old again, ravenous, watching as the bills piled up in a stack by their door, next to discarded shoes and her mother’s robes. She remembered how scared she was that this woman, this person who was supposed to take care of her, could barely even be awake long enough to talk to Meg. Gone was the woman who asked Meg how school was for the day. They barely got by but at the very least, they had each other, and Meg hated it, hated how she’d come home and the entire house would smell like tequila because she’d drop the bottle, leaking the contents onto the floor, due to falling asleep.
“This was never supposed to be my problem,” Meg muttered, the anger pushing her sadness away as she finally, finally allowed herself to open up about this to someone -- all her frustrations, her fears and her hope that one day she didn’t have to step up to be the mother despite actually being the daughter. “She’s the mom here and yet I was the one who paid our bills. She just... yanked my hair and forced me to give her my hard-earned money so she could buy more booze and yet I’m still fucking here. I’m here just... fucking waiting to see if she’ll survive the night? Because she decided smoking herself to death was a better option that sticking around and being with her daughter?”
Meg hated the way her voice trembled, how one could hear the fear in them, because despite how much she despised her mother, she was still family and Meg didn’t want to lose her family anymore. Without her family, what even was she? She prided herself in being a lone wolf but that wasn’t true at all. She was independent, that was for sure, but she needed love and to show love. She needed people around who she could make happy and who could make her happy. Meg didn’t want to be all alone, and the fact that she could very well not have a mother in the next few hours was jarring enough to cause her body to start shaking all over, like a leaf during rainy season.
“I... I hate her,” Meg whispered, the relief that she finally said those words out loud evident on her face as she carefully flattened her hands again, feeling the sting from where her nails hit her palms. “But that doesn’t mean I’d want her dead,” she softly said, sniffling before finally looking into Harrison’s eyes, scared of what he might think of her now but all she felt was his thumb wiping away a few stray tears and Meg almost started sobbing from the softness of it all. He didn’t even need to say anything, because this man -- this wonderful, wonderful, wonderful man -- was proving enough just by being here. For once, Meg allowed herself to lose control, to let somebody else be strong for her instead of taking it all on herself and that was when she allowed herself to just be open, letting him bundle him up in his arms as she sobbed on his chest, letting him run his hand through her hair as he whispered that it’ll be okay, that he’s got her, that she doesn’t have to deal with this alone, that she’ll always, always have him.
“I love you,” Meg burst out saying, her emotions at an all time high but no truer words have been spoken. This was the first time she said those words without being drunk or having taken drugs, but she means it with everything in her. She wiped her nose with her sleeve before showing Harrison a small smile with tears still in her eyes, making sure he was looking at her before she said it again. “I fucking love you, Harrison,” Meg whispered, feeling vulnerable, too open and he promptly wrapped his arms tighter around her, making her feel... secured. If it was any other person, the gesture would have made her feel trapped, but everything was different when it came to Harrison; more trusting, more loving, more honest than anything she’d ever experienced in her entire life. “I love you too, Meg,” Harrison said, that boyish smile forming on his lips the one thing causing Meg to form a smile of her own, the first sincere one she’d made the entire night. “You dumbass,” she added with a giggle. “My dumbass.”
