It was nothing more than a smile—but it set me a blaze. Chocolate brown eyes glistening under the afternoon sun's rays. A fringe was swept carelessly to the side with a shaky left hand. It was a beautiful day, but it paled in comparison to the beauty of Dan. I always wondered how we found ourselves here, but time after time we always did. This park used to be my favorite place to escape. It was close to home, and even closer to my favorite cafe. This used to be my little table under the oak tree. It used to be my place, now it was ours, and I couldn't be happier about it.
Dan sipped away at his iced coffee and gazed aimlessly at the small pond behind me. He broke the silence and his eyes met mine, “I can see why you always liked coming here. It's nice.”
“Yeah.” I agreed. I was nearly at a loss for words because he looked truly stunning in the sunlight.
“Actually, I'm really glad we had time to hang out today.” Dan said as he shifted his gaze down to the old wooden picnic table we were seated at.
“We hang out everyday, Dan. We live together!” I laughed. I soon noticed the velocity at which his hands were shaking and the nervous look the slowly pasted across his face.
“I just, I just kinda wanted to talk to you.” Dan spoke with a shaky voice.
I wondered if this might be the time I'd always waited for. I wondered if this would be the moment when my best friend confessed an undying love for me, but quickly realized that was more than I could hope for.
“About what?” I asked with a heart that was beginning to race.
“Phil, I,” Dan began. His gaze was averted to the table and his tone was anything but calm. “I think I wanna move out.”
My heart instantly shattered. “What?” I asked. I was shocked, hurt and caught completely off guard by his words.
“This just, Phil, it isn't working out anymore.” He stated plainly. He still couldn't look at me.
“What do you mean?” I was instantly choked up and felt tears threatening to pour from my eyes.
“I just can't do it anymore, I'm sorry.” Dan replied. His voice was croaky and weak. Tears began to stream from his eyes. I couldn't help but reach forward and wipe the tears from his eyes. He looked up and his teary orbs met mine. “I'm sorry” He spoke again before breaking into a sob. I joined him on his side of the table and wrapped my arms around him, pulling him into a tight hug.
“W-why?” I stuttered out, still fighting back my own tears.
I didn't understand. I couldn't. After everything we had been through, I didn't know why he wanted to leave. I figured the only reason he could possibly want to move out was because he knew. Somehow, someway he had found out. The only answer in my mind was that my best friend found out that I was in love with him. It could have happened a million different ways, really. Maybe he read my texts with Louise on my phone. He could have logged onto my laptop and witnessed just how many times I actually browsed the Phan Tumblr tag. Maybe he could tell by my lingering looks and often unnecessary touching. It wasn't my fault. I couldn't help but fall in love with him. I never wanted to, but still it happened.
“I can't be in the same house as you anymore, I'm sorry.” Dan's voice was muffled against my shoulder as tears continued to stream from his eyes.
“I'm sorry, Dan. I never meant to mess this up. I didn't mean for this to happen. I'm sorry.” I cried and held him tighter, for what I feared would be the last time.
“Phil,” Dan sniffled. “You didn't do anything. It was me. I screwed this up.”
“Dan, you didn't screw anything up. I understand if you hate me. I didn't mean to fall in love with you, I swear. It just happened.” I confessed with a sob.
“What?” Dan pulled away, locking his teary eyes with mine. “What did you say?”
“I know I fucked it all up and I'm sorry. I love you, Dan. It just happened somehow. I'm sorry” I tried my best to speak clearly, but failed as my voice seemed to crack at every other syllable.
Dan paused and stared at me with a blank expression. My mind had no time to process what was happening and I soon realized that Dan had crashed his lips against mine. I instinctively kissed him back and wrapped my arms around his neck. Dan's arms found their way around my waist. I reached a hand up and ran it through his hair. He pulled away to catch his breath and looked at me with wide, brown eyes.
“I-I never wanted to move out. I just, I just. I couldn't stand living with you anymore because I'm in love with you too, Phil.” Dan said with trembling lips.
“Dan,” I whispered and placed my palms on either side of his face. “Please stay”
He collapsed into my arms again. I felt the warmth of his breath on my neck when he spoke. “Of course I will stay. How could I ever leave?”
I held him close in my arms as he rested his head against my shoulder. It was as if nothing had changed. The old, wooden park table was still beneath us. The afternoon sun still hung high in the sky. The birds still chirped in the oak tree by our side. Everything was the same as it was, except that it wasn't. Dan placed a soft, light kiss to my neck and whispered, “When did you fall in love with me?”
I thought hard, but it was a question I could not answer, “Truthfully, I don't know. I think one day I just looked at you and I knew.”
“That first night at your house I had this voice in my head tell me 'this is the man you are going to fall in love with'. I just guess I didn't listen and then eventually it just became too much and I felt like I needed to leave.” Dan explained.
I rubbed circles in his back to comfort him and placed a lingering kiss to the top of his head. “Let's go home” I whispered.
“Okay” Dan agreed. I held him there for one more minute and we were on our way. Hand in hand, despite our better judgment. I didn't know where we would go from here, or what the next step was. All I knew for sure was that as long as Dan was there, I was along for the ride.
