Philip Cohran And The Artistic Heritage Ensemble-Malcolm X (1968) HD
R.I.P. Kelan Philip Cohran, a founder of the AACM and a guiding light in Chicago
Obituary, NY Times
“For all his life Mr. Cohran was a ravenous autodidact, studying world history, astrology, health science and musicology and passing that knowledge on to students. He also constructed instruments, including what he called the Frankiphone, an amplified version of the West African mbira, or thumb piano.
“Mr. Cohran belonged to a generation of artists who exhumed vast amounts of cultural history that had been widely suppressed since the beginning of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Speaking of his early forays into African history, he told the art historian Rebecca Zorach in 2011, 'It was like discovering a gold mine in the garbage can.’“

The team got together again [July 9th] to celebrate the life of my master teacher, Kelan Phil Cohran. Heres the live video: https://youtu.be/7hv5wwVSJ9M . "ON THE BEACH," Remastered will be an annual event, commemorating how he started the african movement in Chicago, through music, the arts, health info, languages, etc. Do your research! (#AffroArtsTheater, the #ArtisticHeritageEnsemble, #AACM, #SunRa , #ThePharoahs, #OscarBrownJr, the legacy goes on...) 💥💥💥💥photo by @kyndredstudio💥💥💥💥💥 The song I sang, 'Morning Star,' was one that was dear to my heart. One that we always performed together (8 years.) This time, I didn't have the melodious, magical Harp accompanying me. But I know he was pleased. It's such a prophet song that he wrote....." ...we'll be kings again!" He was always ahead of his time. #Althea Teamer danced w/ #kelan back in the days of the original "On the Beach, " movement. She's such an amazing dancer & she always designs her own costumes for her performances. She adds the extra SunRa spice to the equation, lol. We had Malik Cohran on keys (& composition.) He was always #Philcohran 's right hand man (his son.) Then @sonyasviolin graced the stage with her violin. Kamilah on the flute, chuckaluck on guitar, & Ron Prince on bass. Then we flowed into the finale, "the Mistral." We were joined by Aquilla Graves (Phil Cohran's kin) & the phenomenal progeny @hypnoticbrass ensemble. It was such an honor to have studied under such a genius. His legacy will live on forever. ❤💫🕉 #family #creative #music #legend #vocalist #singer #realmusic #ancestoral #cosmic more that #jazz (at Chicago, Illinois)

What a man! What a genius! What a legacy! As you may know, OUR #PHARAOH, jazz legend & my spiritual teacher & best friend, Kelan Phil Cohran, has left this plane. He is now in complete Harmony with the musical spheres of time and space, as he always was. One of the greatest mind of our time, he was a Scientist, astronomer, inventor, anthropologist, herbist/ healer, prophet (astrology), master musician, composer, historian, sociologist, & spiritual scientist to name a few. Quite the selfless man, he was a super star that dedicated his whole life to the evolution of the community. And in turn, we were his devoted family. He could have easily been living comfortably in a mansion somewhere. But instead, he chose to continue to speak out against injustice and the tainted power structure. He fought for our right to black excellence. The way that we can honor him, is to not let OUR music & our birthright slip through our fingers. And be our beautiful black selves, unapologetically. "Royal, Divine blood runs through veins. Always remember that." ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ #CHICAGO, This Sunday, July 9th, 2017 we will have a 50th anniversary of "ON THE BEACH"* 12-6pm . It'll be an Allstar show w/ the AACM, Khari B, his son's, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, & many more! #fc will perform right before @hypnoticbrass. @ 63rd st beach. *An African Movement of music & Culture, founded by Kelan #PhilCohran.
