ok so I'm saying this cause I REALLY wanna see more scary scarecrows in canon, sorry this is gonna be a rant, I think he would benefit GREATLY by using general horror writing tips such as using what scares you to scare others, I personally designed my scarecrow after more primal visceral fears the type that you have one run in with and it stays in your bones FOREVER, but the way I made my scarecrow scary is by pulling from the shit that scares ME, such as me having thalassophobia that shit terrifies me cause one time I nearly drowned, at the beach, it sucked, now I can't go out without being able to touch the ground cause I'll have flashbacks to that stormy day, don't recommend drowning at the beach shit sucked anyways, now I took the reason why it scared me and applied it to my scarecrow, the thought of something big and powerful killing you horribly and dragging your corpse to never be found, but here changed the flavor so he's more "thing in the woods" rather than well the sea cause that doesn't fit his aesthetic

like pediophobia dolls should be burned on sight those scary little fuckers so I used marionettes as an inspo for my scarecrow design, and then we have body horror, I'm a fucking sucker for it cause bodies are gross I also used the diseased aspect cause grosser

back on the primal visceral fear aspect I chose that cause I wanted to make a scarecrow that's more rustic in vibe, sure medical phobias work amazingly but I wanted to lean into that aesthetic and that means primal visceral fear, I want you to look at him and your brain to go "no", again the type of fear you get to ONCE and it's stuck in your bones forever

hell have him use HIS OWN FEARS, I designed mine off a lot of demons n stuff from all sorts of places because mine has the religious trauma backstory so he became the demon, you can really play around with this using all sorts of inspo cause demons are fucking insane, hell use biblical angels (I used cherubim for his scarebeast form) maybe he's more terrified of god's wrath than he is the fallen, maybe he intends to put the fear of god's wrath in others or uses the demon inspo to mock them for thinking their god would "protect them"

if you use his new 52 backstory maybe it's more mechanical like some sort of fucked up Frankenstein's monster where he kept ripping himself apart and putting himself back together again have him use HIS OWN FEARS

hell in a lot of iterations he's ONLY scared of batman maybe after that he adds a slight bat theming to his costume again USE FEARS

now I'm not asking for people to psychoanalyze themselves for making a scarecrow design or making him your abusive alcoholic uncle that's just dumb but please use horror conventions MAKE HIM SCARY BEYOND FEAR TOXIN

I fucking HATE that crutch so goddamn much SO GODDAMN MUCH cause then he's not scary, writers never fucking have anything for the damn thing other than "latent trauma lol"

I love making scarecrow a creature

Some of my inspos for him are like the magnus archives (the dark is a big one but also the spiral and the hunt) and I did base him around paranormal horror

I think it would be fun if people thought he was some demon critter but he doesn’t exhibit enough symptoms “of being a demon itis” so they have clue what the fuck he is

like doing weird body horror bullshit but not being overtly supernatural or whatever (twisting his head 360 but someone punched him once and it knocked the wind out of him)

idk I have a very specific “the thing in the dark” vibes with him

SCARECROW REWRITE

due to recent changes to the story this rewrite is outdated and can no longer be considered canon

this is my rewrite of Jonathan Crane aka the scarecrow

BACKSTORY:

He grew up in a small religious town in Texas, He lived with his grandmother on a farm, pretty much the year one backstory with slight changes, notably him gaining a large deep cross shaped scar on his back and losing a large amount of his right cheek, later on he would become a psychology professor at a university in which he would eventually leave ending up in Gotham, he would do the same job in Gotham but upon an incident at his house he would end up tearing himself apart but be put back together and would spend the last year of his job slowly going mad till he got fired and became the scarecrow

MOTIVATION:

he wants to research fear in its entirety, he wants to see what makes people tick and how it makes them break, he researches his victim's fear for a "paper", he keeps researching and researching for a paper he wants to make, a syllabus on fear for his class not quite realizing he won't ever be able to make that syllabus

METHODS:

unlike most scarecrows this one doesn't use fear toxin, it's more of a street drug he occasionally makes for money, but instead he prefers to watch his victims for long lengths of time, preferring to instill paranoia of what is watching them till he eventually learns all of their fears and starts weaving their downfall, he will make scenarios forcing people into their worst nightmares, such as someone with monophobia losing all of their friends, family, coworkers, and jobs (and ability to gain a job) due to scarecrow's machination then to ultimately kill them in a brutal fashion to terrify everyone else

META HUMAN NATURE:

this version is a Meta-human (I will probably have to post that rewrite another day once I get past the characters for the world building) with his ability being more or less some form of body horror, he can become the phobioanax once stressed or afraid enough but can also go in-between, currently he has high blood pressure so he's stuck in an odd hybrid state resembling some sort of daemon (very on purpose) and the abilities themselves resemble a possession or parasite, such as grotesque limbs popping out from under his broken opened ribs or choking him to go through his mouth, it is painful yet bloodless, as for the phobioanax itself it's more of a kaiju based on religious trauma and a fear response

AUTHOR'S NOTES:

I wanted to make a scarecrow unreliant on fear toxin able to be terrifying all by himself, this version is based on paranormal horror to tie back into his background but due to him not being magic it's probably closer to some sort of body horror which works for this version meant to be terrifying in both a conscious and primal sense

ok so I actually had a lot of fun with this question

first of all we got two face n penguin as drinking buddies (occasionally hatter joins)

we have music meister n killer croc as a rock duo

we have the eraser and professor pyg working together with eraser making sure professor pyg isn't well using rusty tools

hatter, poison ivy, bane, and scarecrow used to be a gang but that's plot shit for later

harley and joker here work together think closer to lego

joker annoys the shit out of scarecrow

man bat and killer moth and scarecrow used to be a part of a bigger gang but again plot shit for later

condiment king and polka dot man are also a duo occasionally working together on a restraunt front for penguin

catwoman obviously worked with poison ivy n Harley and also Nora freeze at one point but plot shit now only Catwoman and harley

mad hatter and scarecrow occasionally work together

I love it when the rogues have a sort of criminal version of a found family dynamic but sadly here to make them evil I had to suffocate the hope out of them so that was kinda lost in translation cause plot shit for later
