Thanks for answering my anon question! My initial interpretation of your poem was that it’s about how men’s perception of women is corrupted by the media. This is indicated in the line, “my fishbowl life directed by Hollywood; through a lens of his gaze.” Since we as women are inherently provocative through their lens, we are perceived solely as sexual objects. Through the male gaze, we are stripped of our identities, leaving us as vessels for men to use to fulfill their desires. Since men perceive us in this manner, we change ourselves, our true identities to satisfy their desires. Men perpetuate these impossible and unachievable standards, and we have no choice but to reach them. We destroy ourselves to meet those standards, in beauty, specifically. From experience, the one compliment that has the most impact as a woman is hearing that you are beautiful. When you aren’t beautiful, you are worthless; however if you are deemed conventionally attractive, you receive that attention that is so desperately craved. If we deviate ourselves from their expectations, we are defiant, but in that defiance, we are no longer deemed desirable. Anyway, I could go on and on and give you a prolonged feminist rant haha, but that’s just my broad interpretation! It is lovely poem, you are a fantastic writer. Good luck on your future writings!
