Researchers advance solvent-based recycling for flexible plastics
Polypropylene and polyethylene are two durable and affordable plastics commonly used as packaging materials, snack wrappers, microwave containers, and other, usually flexible, plastic films. Their flexibility, however, makes them resilient to recycling processes, and these plastics often end up in landfills or leak into the environment. University at Buffalo researchers are leading efforts on a new, innovative way to repurpose these plastics through solvent-based recycling, or solvent purification. Their work has the potential to unlock for recycling millions of tons of plastics that are discarded or burned after use.

I washed their hair and was sooo happy to see it get visibly wet, meaning it's not polypropylene! Not even the tails!
I think it's nylon but I'm not positive.
During pride month!????

My main is restricted so I'm asking on the cartoon blog I never use- Is there a guide anywhere for which Monster High dolls have which hair (saran vs polypropylene) ? Because I keep seeing people say that Creepover Twyla always has saran, but I'm pretty sure mine is polypropylene? Maybe I'm just bad at telling them apart, but the breakage and the frizzy quality of her hair seems very poly. Plus the Fearbook Twyla has significantly nicer hair, and she's apparently saran. I'm also just wary of polypropylene in general due to the fact it gets brittle over time.
Thank you btw in advance!
I’ve groused repeatedly about what I call “Polypropylene Pattern Baldness” which plagues dolls and ponies made with polypropylene hair.
Some MLP G3 have poly hair and many of them have crumbled.
(the pink fell apart when I touched it)
The fiber starts to break up into bits after a few years and it’s beyond irritating. Crumbling is different than standard breakage. Breakage tends to happen when a single fiber is pulled too hard and snaps.
Crumbling is notably different since by grabbing the hair and giving it a light tug you can pull out huge clumps in one go.
However
It would be dishonest to say that nylon hair never crumbles.
It seems to affect some colors more than others.
These are examples. The pony the hair is on doesn’t matter, it’s the color of the hair that is the common factor.
The absolute worst/most common color of nylon to crumble is Heart Throb’s pink. That goes the same for polypropylene. There’s something about the way this color is achieved that makes the hair more prone to crumbling.
Barnacle’s orange is pretty bad about it, but I haven’t encountered that nearly as often as Heart Throb pink.
Cupcake’s light blue has done it on me a few times.
These are less common crumbly nylons:
I have now had Goldilocks’s more orange color of hair (same color as Crumpet) crumble one time, and on a different Goldilocks, the more yellow hair crumbled leaving the orange behind.
And Dazzleglow’s pink (it’s one of the fading pinks) has also crumbled on me one time.
Does anyone have any tips for washing poly hair? Until I can hopefully get the few poly dolls I have rerooted, I'd like to take care of their hair to the best of my ability, but I'm honestly not sure what the best way to take care of poly hair is. I've heard it can be boil washed just fine, but how true is that? Any advice would be super helpful!
