Allegory of Peace and War. Oil on canvas (1776) Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (Italian, 1708–1787) captured a tense, theatrical face-off between opposing primal forces. Mars, the god of war, rushes forward in a Chimera-engraved armor, an omen of devastation. But Peace steps right in his way. She stops his sword while offering an olive branch.

Batoni presents a sophisticated commentary on the interdependence of conflict and harmony. Visually, Mars’ massive raised shield arches over Peace, acting as a protective canopy. This irony embodies the Roman proverb, "Si vis pacem, para bellum" (If you want peace, prepare for war), suggesting that a fragile peace requires defensive strength to exist. The canvas bridges two eras, combining the soft coloration of the fading Rococo with the structured seriousness of emerging Neoclassicism. Loc. The Art Institute of Chicago.
