They move in together full time and Ilya notices that Anya acts differently with Shane than she does with him, more quiet and less playful, and he worries that means she doesn’t like Shane or is jealous, so he hires a dog trainer to come over and see if there’s anything they need to do to help

After a while of talking about how Anya acts the trainer says there’s nothing to worry about, Anya likes Shane just fine, it’s just that she sees him as the boss and is acting accordingly

And Ilya is like. But. I’m the one who adopted her? And raised her before Shane got here?? And the trainer is just like yeah well she sees you more like an equal. And Ilya is like WAIT she thinks Shane is in charge of both of us?? And the trainer is just like well do you interact in a way that would make her think that?

Ilya’s life flashes before his eyes as he thinks of all the times Shane has come over with a snack for Ilya and a treat for Anya, or all the times Shane has announced they’re all going for an after dinner walk, or pets Ilya’s hair and tells him he did a good job at practice, or the fact that he uses the same warning tone with Anya when she misbehaves as he does with Ilya when he’s causing problems on purpose

Shane comes home to Ilya with his face in his hands going oh god I’m not Anya’s dad I’m her brother and she thinks we’re both your pets. And Shane just goes. What.

I'm rereading heated rivalry the book and book Shane is so competitive that when they first hook up and Ilya swallows when Shane doesn't, Shane feels like Ilya beat him at gay blow jobs. #hashtagmyshane

Ilya’s 31st birthday is a relatively quiet affair. They’re going up to the cottage the next week and Svetlana will be flying in for the weekend, but they go out with David and Yuna for a nice dinner and get drinks with a few of the players still in town for the summer afterwards. Ilya’s confused but not displeased when he sees Shane drinking more than usual at the bar with their teammates, especially when he’s in jeans so tight and an emerald green short sleeve button down with three buttons undone.

But then it’s 10 pm and the other players are giving Ilya sly looks every time Shane gets another mojito, yet not chirping either of them about the volume of Shane’s laugh, the loose set of his shoulders as he leans against Ilya, or the bright flush across his cheeks. Then suddenly it 10:30 and, almost abruptly, the other players start to excuse themselves, leaving Wyatt to walk them to the curb, announcing that he called a ride but has decided to wait for Lisa to come pick him up instead. “You two should just take it— you took one of the normal cars, it can stay in the parking lot overnight.” So Ilya agrees, Shane entirely unbothered in his arms.

But then the car is stopping in front of another building and they’re not at home, and Shane is climbing out and thanking the driver before dragging Ilya over by the sleeve and unfastening his cuffs. Ilya doesn’t understand, but Shane seems entirely unfazed as they enter the club, the bouncer taking one look at them and waving them past the line. Without even pausing to get them drinks, Shane drags him directly to the dance floor. Ilya thinks he must be dreaming, because Shane’s arms are around his neck and the bass is overpowering the beat of his heart, and the people around them are dancing like this isn’t magic in action. But he isn’t dreaming, so his arms wrap around Shane’s waist and his feet begin to move as he feels the music in his brain stem, louder than his thoughts.

If Ilya thinks about it, he’ll remember how Shane convinced him that they shouldn’t take the orange Ferrari because he wasn’t comfortable driving them home in it and Ilya didn’t like leaving it parked in an open lot. And he’ll remember how Shane didn’t argue when his mom poured him a glass of wine with dinner, and how he had a second glass with dessert. And he’ll remember how Shane had mentioned that his stylist picked out an outfit for the restaurant as it wasn’t a place they usually went and that the stylist recommend Ilya wear a similarly strong color, like the ocean blue trousers he had worn to the NHL awards the year before with his off-white silk shirt. He’d also remember Svetlana asking him what clubs they could go to in Ottawa that weekend. And Harris’s suggestion of a bar further from the rink than they usually went that had just started serving the Drover’s Apple Cider. And he’d remember that Shane had insisted he switch to loafers from boots right before they left because “it’s summer! It doesn’t matter that your pants are long if you’re too hot.” Even though it was still only 21.5°C and boots for the evening would not make him overheat.

But Shane’s flushed face and loose hair and big grin take up the whole of Ilya’s attention, and the feel of Shane’s crotch grinding against his leg in the dim light of the club eliminates any concerns he could try to grasp at. So Ilya throws his head back and enjoys the music, the smell of sweat, the shake of the floor, the feeling of Shane’s body against his, and the ring sitting proudly on his finger.
