hi! im working on a character that is a wheelchair user, and is of a fantasy species thats invertibrate, as in no bones or joints. im trying to figure out which specific disability they have, and im finding a lot of them are skeleton related. what are some conditions that cause a need for wheelchair usage that arent skeleton related? (im thinking the character is a powerchair user and full time but that might change) so far im considering paraplegic or diplegic cerebral palsy or hereditary spastic paraplegia
Hello!
I'll first just mention that I think all the options you mentioned specifically affect skeletal muscles (e.g. HSP is a motor neuron disease, so it specifically affects skeletal muscles). So if your character has some sort of equivalent to that then it could probably still work, but if they are a muscleless pile of goo then probably not (?). A spinal cord injury could cause other symptoms that could require a wheelchair still, cerebral palsy could cause lack of coordination with the same result, but something to consider depending on your character's exact anatomy and what kind of condition they could have in the first place.
Some ideas:
Chronic fatigue syndrome/Myalgic encephalomyelitis,
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,
Neuropathy (e.g. caused by diabetes or injury),
Complex regional pain syndrome,
Lower limb amputation (especially if bilateral and major) (assuming they have legs or some sort of equivalent),
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).
You can also check this tag that might have some other options I forgot about here.
Hope this helps,
mod Sasza
