Cloudy Saturday afternoons with a stage manager. 🐵💛
Portrait of a stage manager's desk on a Monday evening in the office... & yes, that would be a freshly brewed cup of coffee in the corner. ☕️💻📚
Prep Week Madness
It’s arrived, the dreaded week before the even more dreaded finals week. I’m going to try and be positive though! I want to wake up early in the mornings, have my coffee, go to breakfast, and study my notecards. I only have one essay to write (thank goodness!) I will be setting timers in 2 hour study increments then take an 1 hour to tumblr and youtube lol I hope everyone else can find the motivation to study! We’re almost to break guys! We can then stop stressing over college for a while and focus on the holidays :) Good luck everyone!
What is your typical prep work for a production? What paperwork do you do beforehand and what do you find is better to do once youre actually in rehearsals?
I get as much as possible done during prep. We only have 10 rehearsals before tech starts, so the more that can be done ahead of time the better.
For the purposes of answering your question: I typically have 2 sets of paperwork -- a completed set and a set of templates that get filled in as rehearsals progress.
Paperwork Completed During Prep
This is paperwork that can be created by a member of the stage management team using only the information provided in the script and/or any specifics from the director/team that has been gleaned eitehr from sidebar conversations or meetings that have been held leading up to the production.
Character by page/french scene breakdown
Character by scene breakdown
Slip sheets
Blocking script
Song breakdown (if applicable)
Rehearsal schedule
Tech schedule
Performance schedule
Sign in sheets
Callboard signage
Any memos provided by company management
Contact sheets
Props plot
Any other show-specific paperwork
Call script
Templates/Preliminary Paperwork Created During Prep
This is paperwork that really can’t be filled in until rehearsal starts for one reason or another. There are a couple of things that you can do ahead of time; for example, in your last production meeting you learned that scene 6b would be comprised of 2 portals being flown in, a rain curtain flying in, 4 small waves set on the stage, and a wagon -- you can add these items into a deck shift sheet, but would have no other specifics (storage location, who is moving the items, etc.) until rehearsals.
Preliminary costume plot
Preliminary run notes
Preliminary pre/inter/post show checklist
Any other show-specific tech paperwork
I think that’s all as far as paperwork is concerned. Then there are the other things -- pulling rehearsal furniture and props and costumes, setting up the rehearsal hall, scheduling fittings, taping out the floor, etc. etc.
TL;DR Get as much of your paperwork done during prep week as possible. Even if all you have are blank excel sheets with cells waiting to be filled in under headers -- I consistently find that getting started is the hardest part of anything. Having a template eliminates that step.
Thanks!
I don't think I've done any of the NY2SRC challenges
So this is a huge catch up post. I can't believe I missed like all of them... Some of them I saw and forgot about and others I just forgot to check for because LIFE.
Anyway.
Prep week challenge: Jeez this was almost a month ago... I have no photos of anything. But at this point I was gearing up for Keto, getting all those high fat-low carb groceries. I bought myself a day planner as well, but I haven't used it like I should yet.
Setting goals: I've been making monthly goals for myself for about 3 years now. Lately I've been trying to focus on making these lists more effective. The best ways I've found so far are doing weekly goal check ins (got the idea from the happy healthy holidays challenge) and keeping a daily fit chart (got the idea from fitchris25 and fatmaninalittlesuit). That way I can catch myself before I fall completely off track as I've done in the past. I'm also paying more attention to the step by step planning of goals. Like I'm going to do this, this many times, so I can achieve this.
Workout playlist: Oh wait I actually did this one!
Valentine's Day: I'll be working on this one. I'm really not great with this kind of stuff.
Hydration: I believe I should be drinking half my weight in oz daily. Which would be 129oz, or basically a gallon of water a day. Right now my goal is 68oz per day, which I've been struggling with. Drinking enough water has always been hard for me. It's something I've gotta work on daily.
Positivity: This I'm really excited for. I'm a person who gets very stuck in negative things so this will be awesome. I'll make a separate post for this one,
Just took measurements and starting pictures! Not feeling confident enough to post them yet, but once I make progress, maybe I'll do before and after posts :)
Not going to lie, I'm pretty proud of myself right now because I just figured out my BMR, TDEE, macros and water intake all by myself! I'm so motivated to lose this weight!
