Hi! I was wondering what the difference was between a non split attraction aromantic and then a unit aromantic?
Because they’re different things but I don’t really understand how different if that makes sense?
hi! historically speaking, unit aro was designed to be a different term for the same experience as non-sam aro. the thought was that, as aromanticism explicitly refers to a form of attraction under the non-sam model, the term was self-contradicting, and it would be nice to have a different term. there were a lot of proposed terms, including unit aro. (two links)
unit aro was defined to describe the idea of experiencing attraction as a "unit", and that unit being "aromantic". prime aro was defined as aromanticism being the "primary" lens/identity through which you experience your identity. arch aro was that aromanticism was your "overarching" identity.
ultimately, the differences are... largely linguistic, but each does have a slightly different feeling to it. our system hadn't realized we were plural yet when this discussion was happening, and had a big problem with unit aro that we couldn't articulate then that was probably because of our plurality. we mostly just call ourselves aro, and in some circles may elaborate as per individual preferences (ie, phoenix identifies as gay and aro, alexander as just aro, myself as aroqueer).
we broadly don't expand on our identity beyond being aro in spaces that aren't solely aromantic, because being aromantic is the most important part of our experience in orientation. we vibe more with the concept of prime aro, but can't stand the shortening being primaro tbh, and honestly... just don't care.

Hey! I just wanted to let you all know that I coined a new term!
Neu Aro / Aro Neu for people who are neutral on allo or ace. It expands to either Neutro or Neutral, and it’s for non-SAM aros as well!
The term is intentionally vague and doesn’t expand on what neutral would mean in this case. You can optionally expand it to neutrosexual or neusexual, if you do use the SAM and want or need that label.
So you think you may be aro
but not ace..? OR allo..?
But Casey! I hear you cry. How could that work? Well, dear reader, quite frankly I don’t know. I personally feel like I’m BOTH allo and ace, at the same time, somehow. No it doesn’t make any sense, so don’t think about it for too long. I already did that for you, and I didn’t end up anywhere either, just give in now and accept it.
Anyway!
This is a list of terms with definitions and things for those of us who are Aro, first and foremost. And maybe don’t want to talk about our sexuality, because do aces have to talk about their romanticism? I didn’t think so.
to start, Neu Aro! Coined by @a-romantic--aromantic, this term is for those (like me!) who are “neutral on allo or ace. It expands to either Neutro or Neutral, and it’s for non-SAM aros as well!”. It’s intentionally vague, so anyone who could possibly describe their experience as “not really allo not really ace” can use it! It’s a term for those of use who just want to use aro, and not ace or bi or gay or ANYTHING ELSE! just let me be aro
next we’ve got primaro! For those who do have other established identities, but simply prefer to use aro for the most part, @reesexaviergonzales has come up with this! It’s pretty much exactly what it sound like; primarily aro.
then there’s unicum aro! This term, coined by @aromagni, is for those who are solely or uniquely aro. No, not ace. No, not allo either. No gay, or bi, or anything. Just, just aro please.
finally, we’ve got non-SAM aro! This one’s actually the whole reason we have those other terms, because some people weren’t really happy with how non-SAM aro just... works. However! That’s not a definition! This one’s for those of use who don’t apply the split attraction model (more in depth description here) but still consider ourselves aro! No, we’re not ace, we’re just... okay whatever.
And that’s all of them, at least to my knowledge! If you know some other, similar terms, or find fault with the definitions given here feel free to tell me, and I’ll take your criticism into consideration. Happy questioning!
