idk if u answers asks but whats ur opinion on people calling El "Jane" in a none AU way. Cause i always found it wierd cause she never actually chooses to go by that name in canon. She was only called Jane by Kali cause when she met her she just learned the name and Kali was big on not being defined by the lab and probably leaned on that/ wanted to try it out. But afterwards she never introduces herself as such. Even to Max she's El when canonically by that time she could've told her to call her Jane. Hopper only calls her Jane once when he assumes he's about to die. In California she literally had to go by Jane cause that's on her birth certificate and Will/Joyce/Jonathan stop calling her Jane the second they leave California. Like obviously there's no problem with people calling her Jane i just always find it interesting when people do.
I maintain that people have the right to use Jane if that's their preference. El doesn't seem to care either way if people call her Jane or Eleven, just that El is her favorite name. For that reason, using any of the three is fine.
...However, I'm personally not fond of it. El doesn't look like a Jane to me. Whenever people call her that, it feels like they're talking about a completely different character. I also think a lot of people who call her Jane and insist that Jane is her only real name are the ones who misconstrue her character the most. Obviously this isn't always the case, but there's definitely a pattern.
I always thought the name Jane was a deliberate choice on the writers' part. They gave an extraordinary girl an ordinary birth name as symbolic of what her life could have been but isn't. I think this is shown well in season 4.
El was miserable when she was Jane in California. She was different and alone, being forced into a box she didn't fit into. Jane is used to try to hide who she is, to blend into a crowd and be as ordinary as she can. But that isn't the real her. That's why she sees the bullying she went through as different to what Mike went through. She's trying hard to be someone she's not and it's not even working.
Obviously, Jane is part of her. It's the name her mother gave her and ties her to the life she was supposed to have. But I've never seen it as her name.
Only Kali calling her that makes any narrative sense. Her agency comes from stripping herself of any association to the lab, so it makes sense that she uses Jane and not Eleven. I personally think it should be a Kali only thing because her relationship with Kali will always be different than her relationship with everyone else.
Also, this Jane is very different from season 4 Jane.
This is Kali's Jane, which is more similar to who El is. But it's still not completely representative of her. This is a key part of El's development, does she follow Kali's path of revenge and estrangement or does she choose to trust the people who made themselves her family?
Anyway, that's my take on it. Again, people can use whatever name they want but I will hardly ever call El Jane if at all
