what if the giw wasn’t evil?
what if the giw was not anti ghost, but instead their purpose was to assess threats of the supernatural, and help integrate the supernatural or fantastical into the normal world, gauging how dangerous they are and helping them, if they’re friendly, to acclimate to normal human culture and limits. you could decide that the branch amity meets is a rouge branch that went evil exterminator, or some other explanation, but if you want to add extra angst, bad fentons au, but when they sell their “subject and research” to the giw, the group is *horrified* because what do you mean they cut open their own son?! of course they are intrigued by danny, they’ve never seen such a balanced meshing of ghost and human, but they wouldn’t cut the kid open! no! they would want to learn from the kid! not try to murder a kid who died because of his parents own incompetence! and basically they get the fentons arrested and help danny to heal and learn the ghost culture he missed, and help him and the town to relearn the limits of normal base humans so they can properly reintegrate with human society. if you want to add even more plot, the jl or whoever find out about the giw, but they find out through the papers and laws the rouge evil branch made, and that this group has locked down a whole town of people and they learn that danny is under legal custody of the giw, so as far as danny is concerned these people are trying to take him away from the ones who saved him from his parents and helped him heal and learn his culture, basically became his new family, and like hell is he going to let these bozos take him, especially if you say he’s still traumatized by people, (which the giw are trying to help with through therapy) so the jl are unknowingly trying to take his comfort humans from him, so either you go the deep maela angst way where they take him from them and he basically goes into trauma shut down mode, disassociating when he isn’t lashing out, so they think he’s been traumatized by experimentation from the giw, since they can see the scars and how when he isn’t disassociated he displays inhuman/animalistic behavior, or danny is fighting the league when they try to take him because he is not going to lose his new family and basically goes all feral on them, which possibly doesn’t help their assumptions on the giw, thinking danny has been made to be their weapon or manipulated into thinking the experimentation is ok because they’re ‘family’,
ngl i want to go with the jl rushing in and taking danny from the giw and danny basically going into trauma mode, some part of his traumatized brain thinking his nightmares about his parents finding him have come true and that they’re gonna hurt him again, falling into the behavior he had to use when they had him, since trying to say he was human and still him just made the fentons hurt him more. basically undoing all the hard, slow work of time care and therapy the giw did to get him to even accept seeing himself as a person again, and to trust anyone again. this of course, would at first feed into the misconception, but eventually *mortify* the jl when they learn that they basically ripped a child from the only safe home he’s had, and that that behavior was in response to them, and that they made this child think he was going to be hurt again if he didn’t comply and agree, that they took this young kid from the only support he has, while also making his core think that *his* humans were in danger, which actively hurt him inside since he couldn’t protect them or see that they’re safe. they will have to learn that they were the bad guys here. even better if you say that danny is physically or at least mentally younger, from a mix of still being a baby kid by ghost standards and finally being able to be the kid he never could be before, and possibly turning younger physically as his cores response to the damage from the fentons, trying to keep him alive more.
