After seeing protective Twilight in Ch. 131, I wondered if we can see a difference between him putting on an act to appease Yuri vs. feeling genuine concern for Yor. And going back through the last 2 chapters, I don't think it's always clean-cut. It always makes things complicated when Yuri is around because sometimes Endo doesn't gives us insight into Twilight's thoughts, just his expressions and behavior.

Fake: Twilight and Yuri are talking to each other alone. He's putting on The Best Husband act to deflect his brother-in-law's suspicions. Even doing a bit of manipulation re: Yuri's 'diplomat' job to take the attention off his own skills. This doesn't mean that his intentions are wrong per se, he definitely does want to get Yor out safely, but I doubt that it's his sole or top priority.

Real: instant reaction to a threat, Yuri's not in the immediate vicinity, and Twilight's facial expression gives away his true exasperation. The little sweatdrop is so cute.

Real: this is Yuri's version of "Mama and Papa are flirting!" Twilight and Yor react the same way -- sputtering and sweating nervously.

Real: lol I just love this 'I'm so done' look that Twilight gives Yuri. It reminds me of the face he made in the household chore battle chapter where he thinks to himself, can you just go home already?

And then the big moment! Which I believe is real.

A thought experiment: would Twilight have done this if Yuri weren't there? I think he still would have. The fact he reacted instantly (again) and that intense focus in his glare with the darkened shadow over his face, all make it look like he's solely concerned for Yor's safety and not about Yuri's opinion. In the earlier panel where he said he doesn't care about being pushed around etc., he has no shadow over his face, the background is actually brightly lit for exaggerated effect, which made it seem more like a facade.

Real: his surprise and concern and instant "solution mode" for Yor's sake.

And now the final one which I believe is both real and fake!

This is Yor's POV on what happened. She sees her husband's reassuring, gentle-eyed smile that he's given her so many times. We as the audience know that Twilight never looks like this outside of his Loid Forger persona. However, even though his expression is not genuine to Twilight, the intent behind it is. He is using that 'fake' smile to provide real comfort to Yor and let her know he'll take care of the problem.

This is not the first time he has fake-smiled at Yor while (probably) harboring altruistic or vulnerable thoughts underneath. The most prominent instance I can think of is the aftermath of the mole arc:

Rahab tried to keep the conversation on track. But his fellow brothers were easily distracted by their different opinions on trivial subjects. Kain forbid infighting between them but that did not guarantee that they could work together. Even if it was an important topic they should work on resolving.

"Ugh, we should rally the soldiers for a quick ambush and force them into submission."

Dumah, of course. He was indeed a great strategist but the longer this went on the less attention he paid to their obstacles.

He wasn't wrong per se. It was a possibility how they could work this out. But hell they were low on fledglings and soldiers in general. Even with their followers combined their forces weren't what they once were. As Kain forbade his 6 lieutenants to fight amongst themselves they tended to have their fledglings do their fighting. And that slowly but surely showed.

There weren't usually problems so big that they needed to come together. Eternity was boring and fights contributed to their sparse entertainment.

"As much as I hate to agree with Dumah here..." It sounded like it cost Turel a lot to admit this. "This could actually be a decent solution."

"If this is the best we can do, this fucking meeting could have been a fucking scroll with a multiple choice selection!"

"If you don't sit your arse back down, Zephon, I swear on Kain's name you'll regret it! Nothing you have contributed has brought us any further!"

It was rare for Melchiah to have an outburst like this in front of the whole group. Their dispute were usually fought out in a more private setting. That meant even the youngest lieutenants nerves where irritated.

None of the others spoke up against him though. Only Zephon grumbled something unintelligibly.

Raziel took the opportunity to speak up. He had an idea and no idea if it would work but he also lacked any interest of spending more time in this room and listening to his brothers bickering.

"The South side is their weak spot. It's up against the river. They don't expect an attack there. Dumah, Melchiah, you keep them occupied on the North side. Zephon, your fledglings are the most nimble, have them check out the wall. Rahab, if Zephon finds anything, you will work on getting the wall open. Turel and I will move in with our armies and open the gates for everyone else."

His brothers gave varied reaction but Raziel rose without listening to any of them. Kain's oldest had spoken. On his way out, he gave the others one las look over his shoulder.

"Keep me updated."

Both of you preferred to stay in the lab, where you could do some biology studies and he tried to figure out new solutions for their fightings and afterwards curing. You chatted, helped eachother and managed to create more of the substance which turned guys to humans.

And damn. You understood he was handsome, lowkey even more than his brothers. However you still couldn't help but thinking you liked the turtle form more.

Once, when you were in his room, checking last inventions, you had a conversation about it.

"Hey, um, and why are you so tense when I'm around? I mean, I'm as a human." He didn't look at you, staring at the computer, walls, calculations, but you. Thankfully he was in his original form.

"Tense? No, no, I'm just..mmm..." You paused.

"Damn. Okay, yeah, I kinda am. It's just, I don't know, it doesn't feel right. Not fully you. Sorry."

"...am I that ugly?"

"What? God, no! Why would you think so?"

"Well, you've just said it."

"No! Donnie, you're attractive, really attractive."

"Then what's the problem? It's still me, but like you! Like a normal guy."

This time you pulled away to look at Donnie. He was completely disoriented, with the fabric of his pants tightening. You bit your lip and gently ran your hand down his torso to see the reaction.

"Are you sure?"

An analysis of Bianca di Angelo's role in the narrative and why bad writing can screw over a character.

For someone with such a limited time in the narrative, Bianca is one of the most divisive characters in the fandom. I've been in the fandom long enough to see how much nuance the fandom lacks when discussing certain characters and Bianca is no difference. But it's more than just viewing the characters' actions in a vacuum. It's ignoring the larger narrative problems. At the end of the day Bianca suffers from one simple problem: she's barely a character outside of her role in Nico's narrative. Like it or not, her entire character exists to die and give Nico issues down the road but Riordan's writing decisions didn't do her any favours either.

I feel like this is a huge issue when it comes to the pjo fandom they often try to come up with Watsonian solutions to problems that are Doylist in nature and Bianca is one example of that.

Case in point: Riordan's shit math when it comes to the Di Angelo siblings and how it messes up with bianca's character.

So when we meet them they're 10 and 12. We learn that their memories of their past is kinda hazy and that they don't remember their parents but that they were in a boarding school, then they moved to the lotus hotel, then they were taken out of the hotel and put into Westover's. And at the end we learn that they're Hades's children born before the oath of the big 3.

Said oath happened after WW2 btw. So 1945 probably since Bianca remembers FDR's presidency.

Now in TLO we get an update on this backstory. Hades is speaking to Maria about moving his children to the underworld or the lotus hotel since Maria doesn't like the former option because the war has put Hades in a bad situation with his brothers and also the prophecy is out, the oath has been taken and they're running out of time to hide the kids. So logic says that it's 1945. And then Zeus immediately kills Maria and Hades tells Alecto to erase the children's memories and put them in the lotus hotel, and honestly? I like this version much better? Because why in the world would Hades Put his children in a boarding school for a few years and THEN hide them in the hotel after they were nearly assassinated? Why not immediately put them in the hotel?

And so we get to our main dilemma. Bianca having to raise Nico. This was already strange to me because it's not as if this is a Jason and Thalia situation where Jason was a toddler and Thalia had to take care of him. Nico is not a baby they have a two year age difference. But of course these kinds of things might matter more if you're young. Even then, in what situation would Bianca be Nico's main caretaker? They were put into a magic hotel that mind you, makes time go faster so for them it was a month or two at best and they would have been given whatever they needed by the staff? Same type of issue with Westover's and the boarding school if you want consider that canon. They would have been taken care of by the facility. They probably wouldn't even have shared classes or dorms? Or am I misunderstanding American boarding schools?

And then, Riordan's bad math strikes again and this time with the characters' ages. Because Nico's age in HoO becomes 14 which would have made him 11/almost 12 in TTC but that's not the big problem, no no no. The problem comes from his official birthday which is 1932.

1932... Which would have made him 13 and Bianca 15 by the time Maria dies. Which is hilarious because with the way the kids are written during her death scene as absolute non players with nary a reaction, you would think they were written to be toddlers who didn't understand anything that was going on.

That royally screws over Bianca as a character (and me as someone who's trying to write a story centered around her). Because her main thing. The one time she's allowed to have complexity is the moment where she talks about how she wants to be more than Nico's caretaker, and she's barely Nico's caretaker at all. The best in universe explanation I can come up for this is that this is how Bianca perceives things because that's all that she literally remembers. Those months in the hotel and Westovers.

Another time the plot kinda messes her up is at the beginning of TTC. One complaint that I often see in regards to her Is how quickly she makes her decision. She does not even hesitate. She does not even wait to see the camp. You know the place that would have taken care of her and Nico which would have meant she wasn't going to be his supposed primary caretaker anymore? She doesn't even wait to see if it was an actual good place for her brother? Spoiler alert: it's not camp half-blood at the time was not a good place for either of them really. Nico did not have a cabin at camp and people were not accepting of him. Hell, people not being accepting of hades and his children was something established since the first book.

But once again, this is a Doylist problem at its core. We need to turn Bianca into a hunter but we also need Artemis to leave so that she can be kidnapped for the main conflict, so she leaves before the hunters even reach camp. Half-blood. So Bianca as a character doesn't even get to make a proper choice between the camp and the hunters. To people who only look at characters on an in universe level, it comes off as very rash and not well thought out.

To be fair, on an in universe level, she's a kid so it's okay if she's stupid, but Riordan wasn't trying to make her come off as that way? He treats Bianca's decision as a legit serious choice and not the rash decision of a desperate child.

And once again, Bianca is here for Nico's sake more than anything. She needs to die. So she takes the statue for Nico. Which is so ironic and tragic if you decide to play it that way. That Bianca wanted to be more than Nico's sister, but her literal death revolves around being his sister. Normally I'd enjoy this level of angsty irony but unfortunately that's how the very narrative treats her as well. Even her post mortem decisions are there to maximize Nico's angst more than that they're there to say anything about Bianca herself. We need Bianca to only appear at the end of Botl so that Nico and Percy can have a conflict but it once again comes at the cost of Bianca herself coming off as callous. What's the in universe reason for this behavior? It's so stupid because in universe, Nico doesn't even take that much convincing? One conversation. One conversation and Nico was convinced to stop his efforts in reviving her. Does she just not know her brother enough? Maybe since they technically know each other for a year max. Does she genuinely think she's that easy to give up on? Is she that conflict avoidant? I actually like this interpretation and plan to use it. There's much to be done with a character who's rash and bold but an absolute emotional coward who'd try to avoid an emotionally charged conversation until they absolutely can't.

Hell even after Botl, it's the same song and dance. Hades makes an absolute vile remark at Nico's expense. TSATS makes it into a joke moment and has you believe that Hades simple said that Bianca would have been a better demigod. No ladies and gentlemen. Hades literally tells Nico that he wished Bianca had survived instead.(The fact that I still think that hades is the best godly parent just shows you how low the bar is more than anything.)

I swear to God I spent so much time racking my brain trying to understand what this could mean for Bianca's character.

This is how I basically look like trying to milk every scene where Bianca is there as a character or is mentioned for every drop of characterization.

At the end of the day, I can't blame most of the fandom for being ambivalent towards her at best. The story by design is about Nico. It's designed for you to sympathize with him and yeah if I'm to look at it from Nico's perspective. He DID get abandoned, regardless of Bianca's intentions. From his Perspective , which is the one most people would take, his sister took the very first chance she could to ditch him for people she barely knew hoping people either of them barely knew would take care of him even though they haven't even seen the place yet, and then ignored him for months while he was desperate for a single conversation with her. Honestly had Nico outright resented his sister for leaving, I think the reaction towards her would have even been worse.

(Another sidenote, my very hot tea Is that I like to believe that had Bianca lived her and Nico's relationship would have become worse as time went on and as the camp's anti hades sentiments really started taking their toll on Nico. But I'm just an angst lover)

Worse is that this story is told from Percy's perspective and these two only have like 3 actual conversations together. One of them is her dying, one is about her making her first main decision and that's at the expense of Nico who's probably the fandom favorite behind Percy and Annabeth and the other is her trying to explain her aforementioned decision to Percy and even then, she talks about it in such broad strokes. "I want to be more than X" tells us about who you one day wish to be not about who you are at the current moment. And even when we have Nico as a POV character, Bianca is only there for "dead family member" trope. There's barely any moment where Nico remembers anything important about her to give her any depth. The cards are just stacked against her. Even the people who are at the "Bianca did nothing wrong camp" are barely interested in her. I swear to god whenever an AU comes up where she's alive, the focus is STILL on Nico. Oh Nico would have been such a happy person had she lived! And Bianca? Uhhhhh she would have fucked off with the hunters I guess?

Can we talk about the hunters while we're here?

If we WERE to talk about in universe scapegoats, I'd honestly choose the hunters. Honestly I could make a separate post about how much I hate how Riordan handled them. But oh dear God the way they're presented just comes off as creepy. The way they initially (up until TOA) only go for young girls because apparently older girls aren't useful once they hit puberty and start developing feelings for people and lose themselves(TTC and Percy Jackson's Greek gods oh dear lord are they terrible in Percy Jackson's Greek gods). How they're basically the heroine dumping ground for when Riordan doesn't know what to do with a female character. How ultimately in universe, Zoe more than anyone is to blame to for Bianca's death by taking an untrained girl to a mission where she KNOWS two people would die at the very least. And she doesn't even watch her properly during the mission. Honestly I could barely feel anything about Zoe's death upon rereads as an adult for this very reason. Or how stupid it is to basically put a child in front of a candy store and expect them to make a responsible decision. Who in their right mind would have young girls as young as nine take a celibacy vow? Oh but you'll be safe with us (never mind that we're not just normal hunters here like the actual myths but actual monster hunters) and you'll totally be able to see your brother when you want (actually we barely visit camp half-blood) oh but you'll be a FAMILY with us! Except you know if you catch feelings or get assaulted(holy hell how Riordan depicts the myth of Callisto makes me want to tear my hair out of my scalp)

roy generally solves the issue of having feelings by punching the nearest wall. usually does the trick. roys feelings of sadness tend to blur together into anger and he reacts accordingly, he'll cuss out whoevers closest to him, he'll punch a wall, he'll start a fight, roys not good at emotional regulation and that becomes pretty obvious when hes upset. his coping mechanisms arent much better. he'll hit the gym until every muscle in his body feels like its on fire, and then he'll get blackout drunk and probably arrested. hey man you might have a problem. just might. he does not gaf, if it helps it helps and thats HIS problem mind your damn business. roy doesnt like acknowledging he has feelings and absolutely hates other people acknowledging he has feelings. leave him the fuck alone. hes yelled at many a friend and sibling for asking if hes okay when hes wasted by 2pm trying to deal with his feelings. he doesnt wanna talk about it. all his emotions are repressed. roy suuuucks at offering comfort to anyone but wendy, it feels unnatural and he doesnt like it, it feels wrong to him. always manages to say the wrong thing, sometimes accidentally when hes trying to be genuine, more often on purpose when hes trying to avoid dealing with something. this guy is an asshole. as we have established on the soup show many a time. do not go to this man with your problems he Will make it worse.

lemmy cries when hes in his feels. every time. default reaction. hes real as fuck for that, when things dont go right or hes feeling a lil down he cant stop the waterworks. poor guy. he wishes he didnt cry so often but compared to his siblings, hes doing alright for coping. he feels a lot better after a hug. hes not the best at talking about how he feels. lemmys got a happy go lucky act to keep up and The Big Sad does NOT align with that presentation. he'll usually lie about why hes feeling the way he is, but he'll accept comfort if offered. guy loves a hug. it always picks him back up when hes not feeling good. lemmys world looks a little brighter after a hug. occasionally he'll vent but usually only iggy gets the real details, the others get the watered down wholesome stuff. twin things. hes fucking brilliant at offering comfort though. lemmys a great listener, and unlike his stupid thicko brothers, he seems to always know what the right thing to say is. doesnt talk over someone with solutions, hes not insensitive, nothing he says is the thing youve obviously tried and thought about but somehow everyone thinks its your first day on earth and its never occurred to you to do that- lemmys good at being someones rock. and he gives incredible hugs. lemdog grew up offering comfort to a group of scarred emotionally wrecked kids, hes pretty good at it. and hes glad he is. it gets a little much sometimes. but he knows his siblings need him. and whilst its tough some days, hes happy he can do that. god knows the rest of the family cant.

ludwig does not believe in expressing emotion when things go wrong. he is stonefaced through everything. minor inconvenience? light work no reaction. my entire family has been slimed out? light work no reaction. mcflurry machine broken? light work no reaction. never catch this man showing visual emotion everything he feels is compartmentalised down into an atom sized speck in his heart he will never acknowledge again. deals with it by squashing every one of those little atoms down into nothingness with. the power of music. the keyboard is getting ABUSED when ludwig feels Anything at all. if you arent emotionally numbing yourself where you even at. lame ahh. all the cool kids are doing it. ludwig feels better by feeling absolutely nothing at all. he rejects any attempt at comfort. do not come to his town. do not initiate affection with this man. doesnt believe he needs it. the most he will accept is an awkward sibling pat on his shoulder and even then thats a little much. he sucks gay balls at offering comfort, he always manages to say the wrong thing. i feel like ludwigs not good at considering perspectives outside his own and his perspective is do not feel anything at all. he reads an article on depression and concludes yes. it is that simple. go outside and you will not be sad anymore. he and iggy get in a lot of arguments over his perspective on dealing with emotions. hes weird, because part of him does get it, god knows my ludwig is not the picture of mental health, but he deals with it in a way that is so far removed from Feeling that it seems like he doesnt. conflict!

Season 4 Relationship Issues

Now I want to talk about the lack of progression in Carmy and Sydney's relationship in season 4 and why it creates a big problem with the story and maybe leading The Bear down a bad rabbit hole. The thing about their relationship is that they are the solution to each other’s most pressing problems. This has been established many times throughout The Bear. It’s why the show started off with Sydney's first day at The Bear and not Carmy’s first day. Carmy has what Sydney lacks and Sydney has what Carmy lacks. Carmy has the restaurant and the wealthy investor family member,  while Sydney has the business knowledge and is a natural born leader. Together, they are at peace. This was shown most prominently in season 2, episode 2. This scene, with the blue light hitting on the side, showed the two of them where they were most at peace. What Sydney desires is an equally skilled partner to brainstorm menus together. Due to her past business failures, she does not want to go into any business by herself.  While Carmy’s love of cooking is directly tied to who he does it with. It was originally going to be his brother, but now it became Sydney.

Due to certain factors, Claire being the main one, they both got away from what they truly desired, which was what they found in each other. Carmy, in reaction to his own failures after he locked himself in the freezer during the restaurant opening, became this unfeeling, closed minded, aggressive individual who put his own desires for the restaurant above everyone else’s. This put him in direct conflict with Sydney who wanted a partner she can bounce off ideas with, not someone who she had to follow. But their natural state is this moment, right here. They naturally work well with one another. They just have to get back to it.

Watching season 4, at first it seems like that is exactly where they were heading- Carmy getting away from that negative headspace and going back to how he used to be. Sydney learning to trust him again so that she can start making the decisions. It’s all going well, except that instead of giving the relationship a natural progression to that conclusion, the show chooses to stale the relationship, in preference of keeping the same factors that got in the way in season 2.

Claire. Oh Claire. Carmy chooses to confront how terribly he ended it with her and goes to apologize. This was good and necessary. Claire was the conflict that got in the way of their partnership in season 2, and his guilt over her helped lead him to spiraling in season 3. The apology scene should have been it. Them leaving each other in mutual understanding that they weren’t the best for one another, should have been it. Claire was too triggering for Carmy, and I wrote down my reasons for why I think that was the case, but whatever reason it was the show never gave it. Carmy described the feeling like being on fire. They broke up, they weren’t good, that should be the end of it… but it wasn’t! Instead of allowing Claire to fade into obscurity, the show brings Claire back! Three times. She danced with Carmy in the wedding. Claire comforted Sydney at the hospital. Carmy called Claire before he met his mother. Claire, who was the obstacle between the two main character's path, now seems more prominent than ever and is now a potential future partner for Carmy.

And that doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t make any sense to the narrative established in 4 fricken seasons. Carmy can not have The Bear and Claire. Carmy is much too scatter brained for that. He actually can’t have any romantic relationships outside of someone already working in The Bear because of the amount of time the business takes. Sydney put her foot down with that. In season 2, she told Carmy how she needed his full focus, and did not want to share it. Sydney pretty much told Carmy no romantic relationships...one, it wouldn’t work with how busy they are, and two, she wanted to be his full focus. Carmy recognized that too. They didn’t bother to say to give the restaurant your full focus. No, it’s give each other that focus. This means that, other than finding partners from people they hired, which is inappropriate, the ONLY possible romance is with one another.

And both Carmy and Sydney are down with that. It’s been well established that they both share a romantic interest in one another. This is going to anger some folks, but I’m speaking purely about what the story has given. Now mind you, I love me some good, close platonic heterofriendships, and would have been happy to accept that for them, but the way it was portrayed showed that it isn’t.  In the beginning of season 2, Carmy tried asking Sydney out at the end of episode one, but couldn’t do it, but then planned to take Sydney out on a work “date” , this was after giving Claire the fake number. Sydney showed obvious jealousy whenever Claire came into the picture, or was mentioned by Carmy. Sydney doesn’t want to share Carmy. The feelings are there for both of them, so why did season 4 go in the direction that it did?

First, keeping Claire around when she should have gone on her merry way. Second, by Carmy choosing to leave The Bear altogether. Now, one of my predictions for the show was Carmy stepping down as “head” in some form or fashion and letting Sydney take the lead. Carmy is just way too internally chaotic to ever be a good leader, and that has been established well in 3 seasons. He freaks out over stressful situations. I suspected that allowing Sydney to run The Bear was going to be his way of keeping her. Him stepping down and being just one of the cooks, would have been better for his mental state while being able to still do what he loves, which is cooking with the people he loves. What I didn’t expect was there EVER going to be a choice of him leaving The Bear entirely.

For one, leaving The Bear means that Carmy completely went back on everything he had told and promised Sydney. “I wont let you fail” “ We will work on it” “I don’t want to do this without you” All these promises and declarations, and he wants to leave The Bear, and leave Sydney. The ONLY reason Sydney came to The Beef and dealt with all the bullshit there, including the low pay, the aggressive coworkers, the constant instability, was because she wanted to be with Carmy. That’s it. Yes, she absolutely considered leaving The Bear for the opportunity of a lifetime, only after Carmy went a full 180 on her and became a tyrant rather than a partner, but she ultimately chose to stay despite the stakes, and she stayed for the hope for him to be better and become that partner she desired. Sydney doesn’t want to go it alone, same thing goes for Carmy, and that’s what makes their partnership so special..

..but now that is over with. Carmy destroyed any amount of trust that he gained with Sydney. He wants to leave her behind despite telling her that she wasn’t alone. And for what exactly? An ending where he goes to find himself with Claire now by his side, now that he doesn’t have a restaurant to run? And the way this season was set up, it SEEMS like it is headed in that direction. There are far less friendly moments in between them, despite this season being the one where Carmy is trying to repair their relationship. The thing is, they gave many different scenarios where they could have gotten closer to one another, but the show instead stubbornly had them have those moments with others. Richie takes Sydney to the wedding and dances with her. Sydney refuses to allow Carmy to come with her to be with her at the hospital, and Carmy chooses to talk with Claire versus Sydney when going to meet his mom. The few moments they had between them are nothing like the friendly banter they used to have, which is understandable given the circumstances. But it also feels like the show has given up on them as a partnership.

If the show backs away from this partnership, the story is absolutely going to suffer from it. It already did by choosing to go down the route where Carmy breaks every promise he made to Sydney and chooses to leave The Bear. It already did when they decided to keep Claire around after Carmy apologizes, and had the usually tight lipped Syd, who doesn’t even show her vulnerability to The Bear crew, cry her heart out to Claire. When characters start acting against their own characterization just to make an ending work, then that’s when you know that someone has lost the plot.

Digimon Beatbreak #11 Quick Reaction

In this episode, Tomoro and Gekkomon’s dysfunction resurfaces at the worst possible moment- right after their last teammate got their big evolution.

If you’re wondering why it’s episode eleven and the protagonist Digimon hasn’t evolved yet, here’s a good reminder. After Makoto and Chiropmon made their big breakthrough last time, there’s something delightfully meta about turning the spotlight back to Tomoro and Gekkomon and asking “so what’s the holdup here?” They’ve formed an effective partnership over the last few episodes with only minor annoyances between them, but they haven’t yet hit the highs Makoto described during Chiropmon’s turn. It comes at a time when the show delivers a few things that were due to happen, but the absence of one of the most anticipated events adds interesting wrinkles to what could have felt obligatory.

At the same time, putting up with Tomoro and Gekkomon arguing again is annoying. Tomoro is especially sensitive to Gekkomon’s usual nonsense—eating his pay, not sitting still, general property damage—and Gekkomon making himself the center of attention after a few relatively quiet episodes seems sudden and aggravating. Tomoro has an excuse: with Asuka’s birthday coming up he’d appreciate some quiet reflection time and he’s still clearly a little raw about the link between Gekkomon’s appearance and his brother’s fall. It’s harder to tolerate Gekkomon’s behavior. While he wants to be involved in Tomoro processing his grief, that’s such a big ask and his refusal to take a hint, and subsequent tantrum, doesn’t garner much sympathy. As they respond to Raremon’s attack, including a triple evolution sequence from Reina, Makoto, and Kyo that feels like rubbing salt in a wound, the animosity bubbles over and escalates, leading to Tomoro saying some terrible things and driving Gekkomon feral. Well, feral-er.

Turns out Gekkomon losing his mind was exactly what the rest of the story developments needed. It’s about time some of these Five Star members started introducing themselves, but big violent guy with big violent Digimon isn’t all that compelling on its own. Kaito and his solution to the Raremon problem are exactly what you’d expect from this group. And given Kyo’s connections, his status as a former Five Star isn’t too surprising (granted, it’s hard to envision any twist involving Kyo that could be considered shocking). But Gekkomon bursting in when the grown-ups were talking provides the kind of explosive resolution that scene needed. Kaito was about to disappoint everyone and walk away from a fight with Kyo that he started. As much as we struggle with Gekkomon this episode, him re-igniting that powder keg earned him a serious dose of Finding Out and turned a tepid rivalry story into something with actual consequences.

Delilah (Is she drunk? Is she making a point? Is she confused? Is she finally having that long-awaited mental break? I don’t know, man—but she looks good, and everyone is having a grand time at Elijah’s expense! Even Elijah! It’s a rare romp involving Delilah that doesn’t immediately devolve into violence and includes no sobbing widows! Not a single one!!! Which is a vast improvement over the last romp that had at least three. Elijah is convinced he’s finally found the solution to his “Delilah needs a redemption arc” problem and immediately spends the GDP of a small country filling her closet with three-piece suits. She takes one look at them and tells him she doesn’t like any of them.)

Judith (Specifically, she’s wearing the suit and Simeon (with baby girl Tamar hitching a ride in his brain) is walking alongside her and screaming for Niklaus on her behalf. She’s of the opinion that the suit, the blood, and the sullen-but-holier-than-thou attitude are enough to sell the bit. The other two disagreed. Elijah is... a sort of big brother annoyed with the entire situation, but ultimately takes it well.)

Wilhelmina (It’s a weird sex thing that Klaus asks her to do. Klaus is adamant that Elijah can never know.)

Isolde (Girlie loves a good menswear look. If it were up to her, she’d never be expected to wear a gown in the 1910s. She hates it here so bad. It’s only vanity keeping her from cutting off all her hair and pretending to be a man. Elijah appreciates the eye candy! It'd be better if she would stop trying to brat tame him.)

Marigold (Oh, she looks good. Elijah definitely appreciates the visual component happening here.)

Danica (She’s wearing a suit for an entirely unrelated reason, but Kol points out that it’s a very Elijah-coded thing to do, and Klaus (who likes picking fights) does his thing and picks a fight with her. Elijah tries to calm everyone down, but now Finn is involved—and somehow Rebekah is, too. Meanwhile Kol is snickering.)

Odette (Aurora bullied her into doing it, and then everyone got turbo weird about it. Elijah never finds out... thankfully.)

Siberia Cave Guy (@crimsonlyinglilly's OC, Flax, buys him the suit to wear to one of the only “sireline meeting” they’re invited to attend together because it’s funny—and she’s right! It is very funny. Good news: Lucien thinks it’s hilarious and manages to be in the same room as the village freak without suggesting they burn him alive for offending his eyeballs. Bad news: Tristan is convinced they were mocking him and not Elijah. As for Elijah's reaction? Kol has been running interference for centuries to keep him from finding out about this weird dude, so Elijah is unaware.)
