A contemporary interpretation of a grove - here Prunus serrula (Tibetan cherry) welcomed us to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, where the bark of these beautiful trees shone in the winter sunshine. This small deciduous tree has narrow leaves which turn yellow in the autumn and clusters of white flowers in the spring, but the rich shiny bark is the all year round feature. Some of the students and staff of the landscape architecture and garden design courses were treated to a master class in creating a modern park for the 21st Century by Dr Phil Askew, who has seen the park from a successful games through into an ongoing and meaningful legacy.
