Haarlep didn’t believe that Tav and Co. could beat Raphael.
Haarlep either didn’t think that Tav and Co. would bump into Raphael, would be slaughtered by him, ((or he was in on Raphael’s plan to be killed like my theory and hc)).
We know several things that basically prove this.
1. Haarlep is an incubus. He is not even as strong as, let alone stronger than, Raphael. Nor does he have access to the same resources.
2. If you refuse to play with Haarlep, or if you attack him or deny him mid-‘game’ he attacks you.
3. Incubi can enter an ethereal plane, and Haarlep can fly
4. Incubi are either lawful or chaotic evil (depending on origin).
How do these statements relate
1. This is cut and dry. Haarlep is weaker and knows it. He would not think that if you could beat Raphael, he could beat you.
2 & 3. If he believed you could beat Raphael he would not have fought, but ran. [[He is also not obligated to fight. We know this because (2a) he gives us access to the safe rather than ‘protect the House’ or whatever oath his bound to may say]]
4. If lawful evil - for the same reason as 2a, Haarlep cannot have any bonds that demand his protection of the House. Thus he would have no obligation to sacrifice his life.
If chaoteic evil - he would value his own personal life far more than protecting a House (as he know from 2a) he’s not obligated to do and would not risk it.
I have no ending to this thought. Ta-da
