It's not selfishness I seek and find in others. I search for the same attachment style, the trauma derived one which makes me and the other person in constant need for symbiosis and total isolation at the same time.
I lick and bite the hand that feeds. Same for the ones I fall in love with - whatever love means. It's a never ending vicious circle in relationships caused by disruptions, absence of reverie and containment in the schizo-paranoid position of newborns development.
First interactions with the caregivers build neurological structures, most of the chemistry of the brain since the first stages of childhood - in uterus life included. So, if you also have a 'defected' genetic heritage the chances are you will have personality disorders. If you're ill-fated, your personality structure will be split in hundreds disconnected fragments causing many diseases. The most known is schizophrenia which is also an umbrella term. If you're lucky enough, your brain can build a parallel half of the personality structure too and live a decent life. Decent is a euphemism. Encysted on personality disorders there are almost always mood disorders.
My borderline personality disorder falls into the latter type: I'm split in half. One is kind of ok and can almost live on its own without causing too many tantrums. The second one is pure chemical, psychotic havoc. I've never liked this ill part of myself that is needy, wants constant reassurances and causes exhaustion in partners. I have an insecure attachment style and the fragmentation of some parts of my personality has lead to a poorly built ego. The relationship model I consequently act out is needy and avoidant at the same time, as I previously said. I'm prone to cut people out of my life if I see this behavioural pattern coming to the surface because I start acting in a psychotic way, obsessing over the moment in which I will again be abandoned by the other. Another part of this curse is that I can feel raw emotional material (every shifts in moods and behaviours, body movements, change in the tone of voice, non verbal infos and changes in writing too) of the ones I love, so I always know well in advance where the ruinous relationships will lead. It's like constantly sorting out wheat from the chaff: what is yours? What is mine? I feel a catastrophe coming my way, I'm always right in sensing it - but I just can't bear the waiting. I can bear the catastrophe itself but not the waiting. Weird, huh?
It's nothing banal nonetheless, it's not just me who needs constant feedbacks in the romantic relationship - it's also the other person who needs someone at their side who makes reiterated attempts to shake them from the state of self absorption they're into. My attachment style is carved into my brain, I so only choose people that guarantee the reinforcement of the scheme.
The sane part of the ego structure - built up in years of self analysis, studies, psychotherapy and connections with nature and animals (yep!) - has learned how to limit the damages, but I'm still uncapable of having a romantic relationship without suffering psychotic episodes: if I hadn't taken meds I would have already died.
It is fascinating how the smallest things can ruin an entire life.
I have tons of shit to write and I'm trying to be constant expressing myself in English not to loose the the few things I've learned in the past months.
(I hope I'm interpreting Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott and Wilfred Bion theories correctly - I think they adhere to reality more than all behavioural cognitivism)
