After the eighth time, Hotaru finally turns around to see who it is.

Unfortunately for Reiko, despite any glow-up he might have gotten in the MKX comic and in MK1, the individual currently embodying Hotaru in this situation remembers when MK4 came out. This individual remembers Reiko's ending of just walking through a portal. They remember that being changed to him putting on Shao Kahn's helmet. And they remember making fun of Reiko for over 20 years, along with everybody else in the MK fandom, including the Midway team making fun of him in MKD Konquest mode.

Shane sees it coming, feels the jitters in the half circle of Saviors around them, but he doesn’t move, just takes it. He feels the pain explode on his face and reels back like he was just hit by a truck, stumbling backwards into the crowd that quickly grabs him and shoves him back towards Negan. He stumbles briefly but doesn’t fall to his knees, just momentarily touches one hand to the ground and shoves himself back up to standing.

“You can hit me all you want.” He hisses, “But it still don’t change the fact that you should have killed Rick Grimes when you had the chance, and you didn’t.”
