quando suggestionibus magister tuus rogat ut locum laboris emendet
Suffixes: -meH
Klingons use a special suffix to mark what is known as the purpose clause, or order to. That suffix is -meH, a Type 9 verb suffix.
Some examples follow from Star Trek: Discovery.
buQwI'vam 'omlu'meH wa' mIw tu'lu' There is one way to confront this threat
Here, the -meH suffix is attached to ‘om resist, fend off (v) in ‘omlu’meH in order to confront it (the it in this case being buQwI'vam this threat).
nuvma' DIghommoHmeH DaHjaj rI'meH qulmaj wIchu' To assemble our people, today we light our beacon
This sentence contains two examples of the use of -meH:-
nuvma' DIghommoHmeH in order to cause our people to form a group
DaHjaj rI'meH qulmaj wIchu' today, we light our beacon
rI'meH qulmaj is our beacon - it is literally our fire, in order to hail (them)
jagh wI'ommeH pe'vIl DeSDu'maj DIrar To lock arms against the enemy
Here, -meH is again added to ‘om resist, fend off (v). Here, it is part of the purpose clause jagh wI’ommeH in order to fend off the enemy
HeghmoHbogh rI'meH mu'meyvam jatlh jaghma'... Our enemy hails us with fatal words ...
Here, rI’meH mu’meyvam means words, in order to hail and HeghmoHbogh means fatal or that which causes death.
machoq'eghmeH maghobtaHvIS HeghwI' wa'DIch ghaH first to die in our crusade for self-preservation Here, machoq’eghmeH means in order to save ourselves.
wIchmo' qIb luchIqmeH puvbej'a' Dujmey? Will ships really fly across the galaxy because of a fable? Here, luchIqmeH means in order to traverse / cross, and in this sentence the thing being traversed is qIb galaxy (n). wIchmo’ is because of a myth from wIch (myth (n)).
The suffix -meH finds its way into a lot of Klingon. One example from Klingon for the Galactic Traveler is jabmeH In Order To Serve, a famous Klingon cookbook (jab serve (food) (v)).
aio “heus, trada FN-M-MCMXem.” ait amicus “noli archidux Francum Ferdinandum Austriae occidere ut primum bellum mundi incipiat” ac ita occido
Type 9 Verb Suffix: Purpose Clause Marker
There are three more Type 9 verb suffixes, and these will have to be covered in separate posts. This week’s qaDHom will be posted during the week, as will answers to last week’s qaDHom.
-meH in order to, so as to: purpose clause marker
This marks a verb with the meaning in order to or so as to. The part of the sentence where the verb is modified by -meH always comes first, and as it is a mere clause, it is not a complete sentence in its own right.
Examples:-
jabmeH - There is a famous book on Klingon cookery called jabmeH In Order To Serve Food (jab serve food (v)), described in Klingon for The Galactic Traveler.
jagh SuvmeH in order to fight the enemy
Sanchaj lIb lubammeH in order for them to face their looming fate
(San fate (n); lIb be looming, imminent (v); bam face, have to deal with (v))
tlhIngan SuvwI’ tIq DayajmeH SuvwI’ Da DayInnIS In order to understand the Klingon warrior’s heart, you must live as a warrior
oriundi ab Sabinis, ne, quia post Tati mortem ab sua parte non erat regnatum, in societate aequa possessionem imperii amitterent, sui corporis creari regem volebant; Romani veteres peregrinum regem aspernabantur.
Livy I.17.2
How do you add a main clause to a subordinate or relative clause, when using 2 or more nouns? Eg: "When the dog barks, he wakes the neighbourhood," "The athlete who practices wins the tournament," "when the challenge is difficult, the rewards are great," and so on? Most of the examples in TKD involve only one noun and "I/you/me" etc prefixes. Once more nouns are used, and prefixes aren't used because the subject and object of all verbs are "he/she/it," how can you tell who is doing what to who?
The answer is is actually much bigger than you would expect it to be.
Sounds as if Monday's going to be the start of a new series of posts. I'm queued up till Sunday with posts already.
I'm going to bring in Klingon Teachings on this.
In fact, I could well title this series The Klingon Christmas Lectures.
