headcanons under the cut!

(quick note: since i’m trying to make this fit with the time period of the movie, aka when homophobia was just. Wow. Horrendously bad. there will be some internalized homophobia!)

jack kelly is straight—at least that’s what he keeps telling himself. he’s confused though, because he feels the same way for both girls and... boys? (that ain’t right... right?) then comes this new kid who doesn’t even want more papes! what kinda newsie is that?! he also keeps wearing ties, and his clothes are always clean—he even has a full-blown family! but... the way the new kid talks is... hypnotic, almost... and he does have pretty blue eyes...

david jacobs likes boys. always have, and probably always will. he’s never understood why some of his classmates, now entering their teens, like to bother the girls so much—he can see their beauty, yeah, but... instead of dreaming of pretty girls with narrow waists and long hair, he now finds himself daydreaming about short hair, strong arms carryin’ newspapers all day long, a sly, crooked grin and—oh. oh no.

as the only daughter of joe pullitzer himself, katherine pullitzer, now at the “prime age” for marriage (what a barbaric, disgusting concept! a “prime age” for marrying?! bleh!) but she’s just... never felt attracted to anyone. yes, she loves her friends, loves her family—even though her dad is kind of a dick. she just... doesn’t understand the hype about... kissing and marriage and all that. she just wants to write newspapers, and make sure everyone knows the truth.

spot conlon is definitely attracted to fellas, fellas. there’s no denying that. he’s loud and proud about his sexuality (BROOKLYN’S QUEEEEER) and will soak anyone who dares say anything about his loved ones.
