That '70s Show, Radio Daze (3.14)
One of my favorite dynamics of That '70s Show is and always will be Jackie and Donna's friendship. My favorite moments of their friendship are often the subtle ones, like this scene from Radio Daze (3.14) when Donna barges into the basement to share her news that she got hired at the radio station. Jackie doesn't say anything (the focus is more on Kelso, whose shoulder you can see above), but I love her reaction to Donna's news. Jackie is clearly so happy for her friend. I can imagine Jackie pulling Donna aside later to get more details about her new job.
I really like to pick up on these background moments when their friendship isn't the focus, as I think that these little moments often say more about their friendship than when it's the main focus of an episode. (Other examples of these little moments of their friendship that I've written about in the past can be found here and here.)
BTS 9: Bob's Birthday
Read it on FF.net or AO3!
Set-Up: The opening scene of Radio Daze (3.14) is never one I gave much thought to, because it seems pretty normal for Eric, Donna, Red, and Bob to be grabbing a quick bite at Fatso Burger. But this time I decided to ask myself, what could’ve been the exact circumstances that brought the four of them to go out for lunch that day? There are any number of reasons, really, but I decided to have fun with it and tie it into Bob’s birthday, since his is one of the birthdays we never see celebrated on the show. So, this brief BTS is written from Donna’s POV, and takes place the day before this scene at Fatso Burger in the beginning of the episode.
After Jackie Bags Hyde (3.8), the rest of season 3 is pretty much a drought, as far as Zennie Jackie x Hyde moments are concerned. However, my dedication to my all-time favorite OTP is strong, and I will attempt to manipulate, twist, and pull Jackie x Hyde moments out of nothing in almost every episode. The following moment from Radio Daze (3.14) is no exception to these wily, far-fetched, and often absurd ideas running through my head:
When Jackie agrees to lend Kelso the money to buy the El Camino, she is clearly conflicted. She doesn’t trust Kelso, but Jackie is no stranger to using situations to her advantage, thus she strikes the deal that makes Kelso her errand boy. I like to imagine, however, that part of what influences Jackie’s decision to lend Kelso the money is also her interest in cars. It’s right after Kelso says “But this is an El Camino!” that Jackie ultimately decides to give him the money. She realizes what an opportunity this is. So, I like to think her appreciation for the El Camino influenced her decision as well.
With that idea in mind, it also makes it very amusing that Leo ends up giving the car to Hyde, instead of selling it to Kelso. All of a sudden, the boy that Jackie has tried to convince herself that she no longer has feelings for is driving the car that she admired enough to lend Kelso the money to buy. In no way do I think that this necessarily motivates her feelings toward Hyde (as even at this point in the show it has been shown that her feelings for him having nothing to do with material possessions), but, for me at least, it’s a fun approach for watching this episode. Especially with the way the show drops any and all traces of Jackie and Hyde’s relationship faster than you can say “Zenmasters” after Jackie Bags Hyde.
