My favourite Zeldas are OoT Zelda, TP Zelda, and SS Zelda, but I love Zelda in all her incarnations, she’s such a class act! WW Zelda is sassy, SS Zelda is adorable, TP Zelda is achingly strong and beautiful, OoT Zelda is resourceful and lovely... Despite being about 50 hours into BotW I’ve not seen that much of Zelda because I’ve been fucking around, lol, but she seems lovely too! Though her voice actress is awful, oy. >.<

Temperance tapped her fingers against the console, enjoying the vibrations beneath her. Annoying as it was to others it helped her think and she needed a clear head to deal with emails from Tann.

Behind her someone was making a deliberate noise to be heard and she glanced to see that Vetra had entered the common rooms, with a datapad in her hand and was typing on it quicker than Temperance ever could. When Vetra set the pad next to her and winked Temperance blinked in confusion, watching Vetra leave without a word.

She picked up the pad to read the message on it.

Hey,

Liam says that humans used to exchange love notes on something called paper. Even I don’t think I could dig that up given how old it is, though don’t let that spread around, so this is as close as it gets. You look busy but I think tonight we could both use some relaxing so come down to the cargo bay when you get a chance after dinner. Oh and SAM, since you’re technically reading this too, make sure our Pathfinder eats.

Temperance made a face at that, she’d been known to skip a meal when she got engrossed in something so it was a fair enough reminder.

Just so you know, we all appreciate what you do on here. Even if some people in the Nexus don’t like it.

Temperance melted a bit at the last line, smiling goofily at the pad. It was something to help her get through her emails with Tann at least and after that there was dinner and an evening with Vetra to look forward to.

Vetra skimmed through the supply list, making note of things that were low. Liam was asking for more Blast-O cereal and Drack was trying to find a Krogan root that had only recently started growing thanks to the colonist and New Tuchanka working together on it.

Her messages pinged, another note from Sid keeping her up to date on the going ons back in the Nexus. She was so engrossed in it she didn’t even realize Temperance had snuck into the room until she pressed a kiss to Vetra’s crest, right above her visor.

“Hey you.” Vetra tilted her head, looking up at Temperance for once since she was sitting down. “You need something.”

“Just dropping something off.” Temperance told her, “Making the rounds, you know, stopping Suvi from licking rocks, stopping Peebee from stealing Cora’s plants, stopping Kallo from murdering Gil and vice versa…” Temperance let out an overly exasperated sigh, “The usual.”

“Don’t act like you don’t love it.” Vetra chuckled, “Can you stay for a bit?”

“I’d love to but I gotta go remnant vault hunting. We’re landing on Havarl again soon, need to get it dusted off and running. Don’t worry,” Temperance grinned, “I’ll take Jaal and Liam with me.” She saluted Vetra jokingly as she walked out backwards, turning at the door and leaving it to shut behind her.

Vetra didn’t even realize Temperance had left a pad on her desk until an hour later when she put the one in her hands down.

“What’s this?” She mumbled to herself, opening it to read.

Do you know how awkward it was to ask Kandros if Turians exchanged love notes or the equivalent? Cause let me tell you, I am not facing him again for another 600 years for both our sakes. I wanted to say thank you for the extra blankets I got on my bed, yes I know that was you and I was too tired before to say it (someone wore me out after all) but I didn’t forget. Okay Lexi might have reminded me but you know I get caught up in stuff. And ramble. Wow if I keep going I’ll find out if datapads have word limits.

The point is I love you. Sooooo, that’s it then. See you seen.

Her mandibles twitched, flaring out only a little and Vetra let her finger trail over the last past again. It wouldn’t matter if there was some kinda accident that caused all over datapads to explode and this one to be the last, she wouldn’t wipe that message clear and give it away for anything.

Her ears hurt, they usually did by the end of the day. Mostly from her rubbing at them through force of habit whenever she was dealing with someone else’s personal problems. She wanted to help as the Pathfinder, she truly did, but words had never been her strong point. It took all her patience not to explode like she tempted to.

Scott would have made a joke about that and her name like he always did and her heart panged slightly at the thought of not even being able to call him to complain.

The Tempest was dark, they had docked and turned off power for only essential things during the night while the crew slept. She, Jaal, and Liam had arrived back late, only Gil had been up and tinkering with something and merely grunted at the sight of them. She had wanted to go straight to her quarters but had promised a Sage on Havarl she’d find his sister and wanted to use the Tempest scans of the planets to try to get a starting location.

Temperance bit back a yawn as she reached her station. Datapads were stacked up next to the console, notes on things she’d have to look at in the morning. Or could look at now.  

She sighed, “SAM can you connect to the Tempest database to get me those scans to look at tomorrow?”

“Of course Pathfinder.” Came SAM’s easy answer.

She picked up the first datapad, one from Cora about the Asari Ark. That would also have to be dealt with and with any luck Temperance would have another Pathfinder to stand by her as well as the majority of the Asari back on the Nexus. If they were all still alive. The next datapad was from Suvi on mineral deposits, and the pile went on and on until she found one from Vetra.

You’re not going to get this until you guys get in and I hope everything went all right on Havarl, but I thought I’d leave you this little reminder:

Come to bed Ryder, work can wait until you get some sleep. I found more blankets if that’s enticing.

Temperance set the pad down with a smile and stood with a stretch, leaving the empty command centre to her quarters. Vetra was right, things could wait, and more blankets coupled with the promise of Vetra was something she just couldn’t say no to.

One

Jack’s not one for words, not unless she’s about to be cursingout someone but Shepard’s changed her during her time on the Normandy. Shestill doesn’t like to talk feelings and emotions with people but she can handletalking to her kids better, it makes her a better trainer than she ever thoughtshe could be.

Still she isn’t about to open her mouth and tell Miranda whojust so happens to be bleeding out in front of her that it’s going to be okay.It’s a lie and they both know it.

“Shepard isn’t far out.” Jack says, checking her omnitoolagain for the ETA from the Normandy. It’s just luck that she stumbled uponMiranda while on this mission with the 103rd Marine Divison and it’seven more luck the Normandy was in the area. She takes a second to yell at herstudents to watch their barriers when the sky thunders above them with grenadesbeing lobed overhead.

“Jack.” Miranda’s voice distracts her, it’s far too seriousthan she likes even though she’s always made fun of Miranda for being likethat. A hand catches her own and Jack stares down at Miranda, trying not tolook at how red her once pristine white parts of her outfit are now.

A year ago she would have been fine with leaving Miranda todie. A year ago they weren’t in this awkward relationship of sleeping with eachother and leaving.

Miranda presses her lips together like she’s trying to stopherself from saying anything and not for the first time Jack wishes she couldmake Miranda lose her iron control.

“Tell Oriana.” Miranda finally gets out, leveling Jack witha pleading look. “If I don’t make-”

“Listen cheerleader, you’re going to make it.” Jack sneersand apparently the lies can fall from her lips after all, “Stop trying to pussyout on this war so soon.”

“My mistake.” Miranda smiles but its wan and just makes herlook more tired.

Jack subtly checks the ETA again but is saved from worryingabout it when she hears the engines of the Normandy up above them.

“Looks like you were right Jack.” Miranda comments, “I’m notout yet.”

Jack stays quiet and just helps Shepard load Miranda onto agurney to push her into the medbay. Chakwas can do the rest.

“Did you want to stay?” Shepard asks her and Jack, for allher blustering, still hesitates.

“Just tell her to stay out of the way.” Jack pushes her ownway off the Normandy and back to her kids, leaving Miranda and any emotionalsentiments behind.

Two

Miranda finds her on one of the 103rds ships a week laterwhile Jack is in the middle of showing Prangley a more powerful biotic wave.

“You look like shit.” Jack tells her point blank, for asecond she thinks about how much worse Miranda looked on that planet.

“Charming.” Miranda rolls her eyes. She isn’t clutching ather stomach and when Jack blinks the blood she sees there is gone so everythingis fine really.

“Prangley stop gawking, get back to work.” Jack says withouthaving to turn, she can tell by the lack of explosions in the room that he’sjust staring at them.

Miranda makes her way towards her, watching Prangley for asecond. “You’ve done great work with them.” She comments and Jack preens underthe compliment.

“Someone had to.” She says and silence falls between themfor a good five minutes before she turns to Prangley and nudges her head to thedoor. “Hit the showers Prangley, you’re done.”

She bumps him on the shoulder when he’s close enough, aquiet show of support and the kid beams as he walks away.

“So what brings you here?” Jack asks, turning back toMiranda.

Miranda shrugs and Jack knows this is just a companionshipcall then. They end up in Jack’s bunk, sweaty and tired and her hand pressesagainst Miranda’s stomach where there’s almost nothing but smooth skin andhardly even a scar.

They fall asleep like that and Miranda’s gone the nextmorning like she was never there. There’s no note or words passed between themfor goodbyes. Jack gets up and lets her memories of the night fall to thewayside.

Three

She meets Miranda at the Citadel, in Purgatory, with thelights flashing over them. Her students are taking advantage of down time andwhile she’s pretty lax about it Jack still keeps an eye on their alcoholconsumption.

It’s all Shepard’s fault for making her some sort ofresponsible person now.

For a change Miranda’s wearing a red dress that’s cut justso to show her stomach. It’s like she’s flaunting her survival to anyonewatching, it’s all cocky and sure just like Miranda ought to be.

Jack isn’t about to say she’s relieved about that fact.

“I haven’t gotten any closer.” Miranda mumbles just loudenough so only Jack can hear her, they’re right in each other’s spaces, crushedby the bodies around them on the dance floor and acting almost like a couplejust to exchange information.

It was Miranda’s idea, Jack’s was to tattoo it on her bodyand let Miranda find it later that night.

“Kahlee checked the logs, they swung by overheard at somepoint.” Her mouth tastes sour with the idea that Cerberus was so close to herstudents again. She didn’t even think about how close they were to her untildays later. Somewhere down the line her survival stopped being her mainpriority.

“I’ve heard whispers of Horizon.” Miranda is frowning butthat changes to some kind of flirtatious smile when a Turian glances their way.

It’s all false, Jack would rather the frown, rather seeMiranda as the calculating bitch she knew she could be rather than the Mirandathat was putting on a front.

It makes her angry, partly at Miranda, partly at herself.She’s letting herself be compromised so instead of pulling Miranda closer shephysically pushes her away and delves into the crowd to lose herself.

Miranda doesn’t show up that night and Jack pretends toherself that she wasn’t waiting up for her to.

Four

“You can’t be serious.” It’s the first thing Miranda says toher when she finds Jack again, staring at the Varren Jack’s adopted.

Jack grins sharply, “He sleeps in my bed.”

“Not if I’m there he doesn’t.” Miranda mutters and they’llargue about it for sure though it won’t be like the bitter silence that wasaround them from Jack leaving that night.

“Who says you get to be there?” Jack snorts in disdain.

“I’m fairly certain of it.” Miranda smirks, all surety andJack wants to punch her in her smug face. Or kiss her. She doesn’t do either,just stares. Miranda relents after a few seconds. “I’m going to Horizontomorrow. Oriana’s there.”

Horizon - where people keep going and never get heard ofagain, the panic for a split second makes Jack sick and she curls her handsinto fists, letting her nails bit into her skin to stop herself from screaming.

“Let’s do this later Jack.” Miranda sighs when she sees Jackanger. She makes her way to the bed and pushes Jack down, looming over her.

Jack let’s her, grasping harshly at Miranda’s hips, so hardthat it’ll bruise and stay there as a reminder that Miranda has other things tocome back to. She does it so she doesn’t have to say it and instead the wordsget lost somewhere between her head and her lips.

Five

Miranda leaves her with an open comlink identification toreach her until she gets to Horizon.

Jack’s fingers trace the code and she almost punches in: be careful.

She throws her padd across the room at that and Eezo catchesit, breaking it in the process and her link to Miranda.

She tells herself that means nothing.

One

They trade banter and insults to each other across the barlike it’s nothing. Shepard finds them like that and teases them but as soon ashe’s gone they stare at each other.

“Congratulations on not dying.” Jack drawls, she saw all thenewsfeeds about Horizon. She waited until she saw Miranda’s name listed as asurvivor.

“That’s it?” Miranda raises an eyebrow. “That’s all I get?No comment on my poor decision making?”

“It was shit.” Jack agrees with her. She catches Mirandalooking at her, her face unreadable and frowns. “What do you want me to say?”

Miranda sighs, “I suppose nothing.”

That’s what she’s expecting of Jack after all.

“Hey.” Jack says quietly instead, not quite looking at Mirandaand more to the wall behind her. “I’m glad you didn’t die.”

She feels embarrassed after it and stands up, taking herdrink with her, Miranda’s hand shoots out to grab her wrist to stop her beforeshe walks away though.

Miranda reaches out with her other hand to grasp Jack behindher head and pulls a move that usually Jack would, tugging her in for ascorching kiss.

“Didn’t think you had it in you.” Jack laughs when shefinally pulls away.

“Someone told me not to pussy out about this.” Mirandashrugs.

Nothing more actually needs to be said between them and Jacksmirks to herself as she drinks and enjoys the rest of the party. That nightMiranda goes home with her and stays until the morning for once, it says morethan any words do.

He feels no abashment in conversing with a cat – as its only actual participant, the discourse is, as a matter of course, higher quality than that of the Silvermoon Assembly.

4: What's your favorite line of dialogue?

“Well well. No wonder you’re hungry. Who is it? Not that mangy ginger from Murder Row, I hope?”

7: Where did the title come from?

I published it very early in the morning and was tired and impatient, so I stole inspiration from “The Grand Magister’s Asylum” on the Isle of Quel’danas, the indulgence being his lovely and wayward furball, of course. I later regretted naming it that, because I later wrote a fic which demanded to be called “The Grand Magister’s Asylum”, so I look as unoriginal as I actually am, lol.

Thank you so much for the ask! I don’t think anyone’s ever asked me about this fic before, haha. It’s very old now, and was hastily written, but it seems to have inspired a whole series of Rommath-with-cats fics on AO3, so it has a special place in my heart. <3
