11. Rant all you like. I know how you are. Don’t feel bad for ranting. I will read every last bit.
11. Do you believe Jack is John’s son? If not then who do you think it is?
aslasjdlasj I was just thinking about this earlier today when i was in my Johnigail feelings LOL
I’m a sucker for sweet love stories with happy endings; so if i had my way, then John and Abigail fell in love and Jack is John’s son and yeah, they had a few rough years but they do genuinely love each other.
But Rockstar and Red Dead never go my way.
Ultimately, it does not matter if Jack is John’s biological son or not because John eventually steps up as the boys father and raises him. At that point, the only thing that matters is that John is taking up that role and being there. I’m a firm believer that true family is what you make of it and blood has very little say in the end. I think John would feel the same considering who raised him.
I also don’t think Abigail would lie about John being the father, especially when he was so bad at it for like 3 years straight. Arthur would have happily take up the role whether Jack was his or not, but Abigail stands by her word the entire time. We don’t get to learn a lot about Abigail until later in the story, but she strikes me as someone who is painfully honest at all times, even when it hurts herself and others. She’s bitter and angry, but she stays loyal to John. She could have made a thousand different choices, but she stays by John’s side through it all. I think it would be interesting to know more about her backstory and the specific circumstances under which she came to be with the gang, but I think the strength of her character doesn’t really track with the kind of long deception required to lie about the father of your son.
As much as I would like for Abigail and John to love each other from the beginning, I don’t think that’s necessarily what happened. But their love has always been this strange thing, barbed and sour-coated and hidden behind some nonsensical mask. John’s just careless enough to accidentally have a son when he wasn’t ready, and Abigail seems unlucky enough in life as well. That being said, she steps up as a mother immediately, and kicks ass in a way that no one else in the gang is able to. She said John was the father, and stuck to it even when it was nothing but an inconvenience for her. John’s perspective is easy to sympathize with, he’s young and rash and the last thing he wants is any kind of responsibility, but it’s hard not to side with Abigail in the end.
John, regardless of whether or not Jack is his, does take responsibility for Jack. And from that point on, Jack is John’s son. It’s probably not the fluffy wholesome love story I would like it to be, but I think it’s still sweet and ultimately happy. (Do NOT talk to me abt RDR1)
